Despite the PSP's reputation as a bit of a let-down and the DS' reputation as a ridiculous success story, Sony does not think that its handheld is overshadowed by Nintendo's dual-screened moneymaker. Claiming to be very happy with the PSP, SCEE boss David Reeves touted the system as a success.
"I think you can ... see the smile on our faces when we talk about what we're offering at this price and the games that are available," Reeves claims. "We're very, very happy and comfortable with our PSP business.
"And I don't think we're necessarily in the shadow of DS - they have different types of games and we have a different positioning for PSP which is not just about gaming, but Go Explore and everything else that comes with it."
Every time I do a story on the PSP, I go out of my way to say that I love it, because it's true. I have big love for the PlayStation Portable and I think it's a shame that it never quite caught on. It's been running mostly on pure potential for years, with only a handful of titles that are absolute must-have games. I really hope that Square-Enix and Capcom's continued support, as well as the PSP 3000, shows other publishers that there is money to be made from the PSP. I just don't know if it'll ever catch on after so many years.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
That being said, I do love my DS too.
The problem about this is that cellphones already own this "multifuncional devices" market, and PSP cannot offer too much fight with phones (at least here in Mexico those are the facts).
I guess the only reason that somebody would buy a PSP is to fill it with homebrew...
There is no reason that handheld only games shouldn't be playable on the TV. With super gameboys or from a download service like xbox live arcade.
As a PSP / DS owner, I say both of them have a place on the market.
The problem with them is that you use the DS to play DS games and PSP to play non-PSP games.
or with a PSP-2000, the connector cables to play on your TV...
I think games like God of War: Chains of Olympus really show the potential of the psp. I still have trouble wrapping my mind around being able to play games that awesome, with that kind of visuals and production value, on a handheld.
On the other hand, it kind of angers me that games like Final Fantasy Crisis Core comes out on psp. It really should belong on the ps3 in glorious HD, not on a wee little psp screen.

/blame internets.
Your statement is strong considering mine is that the PSP is the better system and I hate the DS.
..this is coming from a guy that owns both systems.
I love nintendo but at this point I love sony more both on console and portable in the new gen. Sony just looks good and does the games right... now if we could just get MORE GAMES!!!
Thankfully, the PSP is slowly starting to pick up steam from Japanese developers.
