PSP isn't in the shadow of the DS Colossus, claims Sony photo

Despite the PSP's reputation as a bit of a let-down and the DS' reputation as a ridiculous success story, Sony does not think that its handheld is overshadowed by Nintendo's dual-screened moneymaker. Claiming to be very happy with the PSP, SCEE boss David Reeves touted the system as a success.

"I think you can ... see the smile on our faces when we talk about what we're offering at this price and the games that are available," Reeves claims. "We're very, very happy and comfortable with our PSP business.

"And I don't think we're necessarily in the shadow of DS - they have different types of games and we have a different positioning for PSP which is not just about gaming, but Go Explore and everything else that comes with it."

Every time I do a story on the PSP, I go out of my way to say that I love it, because it's true. I have big love for the PlayStation Portable and I think it's a shame that it never quite caught on. It's been running mostly on pure potential for years, with only a handful of titles that are absolute must-have games. I really hope that Square-Enix and Capcom's continued support, as well as the PSP 3000, shows other publishers that there is money to be made from the PSP. I just don't know if it'll ever catch on after so many years.

I love my PSP too Jim, and I'm talking about the first gen one too.

That being said, I do love my DS too.

Part of what mr. Reeves points is true for me: since it was released, I thought in PSP more as a "multiuse" gadget than as a portable gaming console.

The problem about this is that cellphones already own this "multifuncional devices" market, and PSP cannot offer too much fight with phones (at least here in Mexico those are the facts).

I guess the only reason that somebody would buy a PSP is to fill it with homebrew...

I don't like handhelds. The PSP and DS got some decent games, but nothing I wouldn't rather play with a controller on a TV.

There is no reason that handheld only games shouldn't be playable on the TV. With super gameboys or from a download service like xbox live arcade.

I like my psp too, but I'm not playing as much on it as on my DS. Lack of games...

The DS is the better system and I hate the PSP but I have to admit that I've seen a bunch of PSP's around and have seen decent sales figures (at least for Japan) that tell me that despite me not liking the system, it isn't doing too bad. I do think that the handheld battle has been decided though. There's probably another redesign in the future of the DS and then it's onto the next system.

"we have a different positioning for PSP" is that corporate speak for second place?

A system doesn't have to be first place in sales to be successful.
As a PSP / DS owner, I say both of them have a place on the market.
The problem with them is that you use the DS to play DS games and PSP to play non-PSP games.

I'd love to see DS and PSP get in to a huge competition with great game releases back and forth. Just not really seeing it yet though.

I have both the psp and the ds, and I think the systems are really just different, I wouldn't declare either one superior. They both have about the same number of must have games that make the system worth a purchase.

I think games like God of War: Chains of Olympus really show the potential of the psp. I still have trouble wrapping my mind around being able to play games that awesome, with that kind of visuals and production value, on a handheld.

On the other hand, it kind of angers me that games like Final Fantasy Crisis Core comes out on psp. It really should belong on the ps3 in glorious HD, not on a wee little psp screen.

@Blind assassin

Your statement is strong considering mine is that the PSP is the better system and I hate the DS.

..this is coming from a guy that owns both systems.

I own both and if I had to choose, it would hands down be the PSP... I love both systems for their own reason but frankly, the psp looks great AND plays great... DS just has the play great going for it... I wish it would have picked up more but I'm pretty happy with the games that I have for it now and I'm backlogged on the games as it is but still... more games would always be good news as long as their not fucking wii dog shit...

I love nintendo but at this point I love sony more both on console and portable in the new gen. Sony just looks good and does the games right... now if we could just get MORE GAMES!!!

The PSP is definitely more successful than pass challengers to Nintendo's crown, but it is still a runaway success for the dual-screen titan.

Thankfully, the PSP is slowly starting to pick up steam from Japanese developers.
