PSP is Japan's top-selling console for 2010 photo

The year-end report by ASCII lays it all out, and it's exactly as we expected. The PSP and DS sold like hotcakes. Or rice cakes. The PSP was the only system to show sales growth over 2009 numbers, pushing out some 60,000 units over last year, to 2,729,718 units sold in 2010. That just barely edges out the DS with its 2,719,544 units.

I'vew always wondered how a PSP hater would fare in Tokyo for a week. Everyone there has their PSP out, everywhere you look. I suspect snide, under-the-breath remarks and IRL trolling would slowly give way to a realization that the PSP is a great little game system with plenty of good games in its library. Or that everyone in Japan loves Monster Hunter.

The ASCII numbers show that Monster Hunter Portable 3rd was the second best-selling game in Japan for 2010. Over 3 million people bought a copy in 2010, which probably has a lot to do with the PSP sales numbers. The top seller? It's Pokemon Black/White, of course, with some 4.7 million copies sold. But it's not a fair contest as MHP3 only had a month on the market.

Check out the full 2010 rankings for Japan after the jump.

That's a TON of PSPs. I wonder how the numbers compare to cell phone games, though.

Good for you PSP! Ever since Mega Man Powered Up, I have felt nothing but love for you. Good on the PS3 too for catching up to the Wii for a near-tie.

I love ties.

@ Epic- Really? It's easily my favorite Mega Man game of recent days. I figured they'd make tone of them.

I know it didn't sell well though, which shows that they probably should have made the game for the DS. Likewise, they should have made Resident Evil Deadly Silence on the PSP.

I love my PSP its just that, as with DS, I wish Japanese developers would understand that folks in the US and Europe can't get together so easily for multiplayer games. Ad Hoc modes are all well and good, but networked modes still need to be mandatory.

Seems like Pokemon, Mario Kart, Monster Hunter and Phantasy star are the only games that do it.

PSP has a small, condensed library of quality games...

Gran Turismo, MGS Peace Walker, Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe, Monster Hunter, Little Big Planet and some more...

Not to mention loads of PS1 clasics from the PSN store.

The rewards may have been a long time coming, but I really do enjoy my PSP. I'm sure someone will tell me I'm an utter arsehole for that previous statement.

i'm really disappointed that japanese developers have had such a small presence on the current-gen systems, but if handhelds are where the money's at i guess can't blame 'em.
fun fact: psp is the reason why i'll never try valkyria chronicles. i'm not going to get hooked on a game and then get blue balls because i can't play the sequels. f that.

Further proof that Japan's game market is slowly shriveling away into obscurity.

@zanch what do you mean? If japanese games still sell in japan then there's nothing wrong with the market. Its the north american market that's fucked. Its all call of duty this call of duty that, that most competitors can't even compete. Even so that japanese develpers are scared to bring their games state side. If anything its the north american market that only plays fps that needs to shrivel into obscurity.

It's always struck me as strange that so many people desperately want the PSP to be a failure. They get genuinely angry if someone is happy with the games on the system, as if you've just somehow insulted their DS. It's even stranger that most of the haters are Nintendo fans, the same people who are known to fly into fits of rage and trot out long lists filled with "Guitar Hero" and "Madden" titles when someone says the same thing about the Wii.

You know, your comment made me realilze, almost every fanboy has a reason to hate the PSP. Nintendo fanboys because it dares to challenge the superior DS, 360 fanboys becuase it's not a Microsoft piece of hardware, and Sony fanboys because every good game that could have been put on the PS3 gets put on the fucking PSP instead.

That said, this just proves that one day, Monster Hunter will surpass Pokemon. It's not a matter of if, but when.

It beat the DS by 10,000 units, so it wasn't exactly a land-side victory, now was it. But I guess Sony fans will take a sales win, anywhere they can get it these days. LOL!

@PEICanada7

This has nothing to do with sony fans but more to do with those of us that get tired hearing the psp is dead...

It has that image and none of us understand why so its nice to see it doing well! Its not about it slightly selling more then the DS.You really think anyone who is happy the psp is doing well thinks nintendo lost with their DS?

We can safely say both are winning nintendo wont be losing any sleep over these numbers. And sony deserves to feel that the handheldmarket isnt a lost cause so they keep on making them.

What im trying to say is nintendo has been dominant in the handheld market ever since the beginning! The PSP is good cause it drives both to be competitive! If the psp would have failed like many either wanted or claimed! I dont think anyone would have the balls to challenge Nintendo again in that market for a very long time!

Aren't they the same thing? If you're not a Sony fan, than why would you care if people say the PSP is dead. Its not dead yet in Japan because of Monster Hunter, but that still doesn't save it in the rest of the world!

Sony only wins in Japan. This is news how?

Though it's rather funny that people think that a game's gotta be Call of Duty to sell big here in the States. It's actually more diverse genre wise than Japan.

@SayWord: basically the same as any other fandamentalist: they're all short sighted and full of hate. Also FYI fandamentalist =/= fanboy, a fanboy loves his/her console(s) of choice, fandamentalists on the other hand just hate any other console/gaming device that's not the one they worship.

That's funny, as I think MH is very boring. I really tried playing the game, but hunting is one thing, but the allowing me to burn my food is absolutely preposterous. Also, few different moves with weapons made this game dead for me.

I love my PSP though, I can't stop playing Dissidia and 3rd Birthday will be awesome.

PS: My XlinkKai tag is raelxx. really.
