PSP Go tech details: battery life, new memory, Bluetooth photo

The Euro PlayStation.blog has plenty of new details on the PSP Go. Most of them are pretty positive changes to the system, in my opinion. The one that isn't is the battery life. Also, it's an embedded battery.

PSP product manager Adam Grant:

We have adopted an embedded battery to realize a smaller and lighter PSP system. The battery life is equivalent with the current models meaning approximately 3 to 6 hours for gameplays and approximately 3 to 5 hours for playing back videos.

Either this is going to be a huge deal-breaking detail, or you'll shrug it off because a) you're not getting a PSP Go anyway, or b) you're getting a PSP Go anyway. I'm with the second group, but I'm still a little discouraged by the details on the battery life. I've already got one portable device (iPhone) with a hoofed battery life.

Other more positive feature details:

  • game sleep function lets you operate XMB while suspending games
  • Bluetooth supports wireless headphones
  • clock and calendar functions
  • USB cable delivers software to unit
  • new M2 memory sticks take up less room on device

Finally, if you haven't already heard, Sony is planning on launching a goodwill program that will address the complaints that UMD-owning gamers have with this driveless device.

The Euro PS blog has plenty more details for you.

The short battery life doesn't really bug me too much. I'm never playing one a longer enough to run into that problem.

Isn't that 3-6 figure normal for the PSP anyway? I remember something along those lines.

Wait...M2 Memory Stick? Does that mean my Pro Duos are useless now?

The low battery life is a huge turn off. How did they not achieve a better battery life when there's no spinning UMD?

unangbangkay - that's right - no more MS pro duo

I figured it wouldn't have much better battery life. They may have taken out the power sucking UMD drive but they also made the entire system smaller. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Unless you're a fat kid. And then you've probably figured out how to do that a long time ago.

3 to 6 hours? Holy fuck, and I thought the DSi was short.

Completely unsold right there. What Scroll said. Seriously, how the fuck?

@unangbangkay- that's normal for players using a UMD on the PSP. Playing memory stick titles can usually elicit up to 7 hours of playtime, if you're really lucky. Movies off the memory stick have an average of 6.5. With a Slim battery anyway. This is a downgrade if you compare it by those standards.

And yeah, the M2 is the successor to the Pro Duo. Another useless proprietary memory format from Sony that costs way too much to be competitive.

I don't know, 3 to 6 hours seems pretty damn good to me, if your just playing something on the go. I mean, compared to the last hand held gaming device I had anyways...

...true, it was a Game Gear which only lasted two hours on 6 AA batteries though, but still...

So will the firmware stuff (sleep mode XMB, calendar, clock) also come to the old PSP? At the press conference they said so.

Same battery life AND more expensive? I'll take two!

So what do we do with those memory sticks we all bought for our old PSPs? =P

But seriously, holy shit that thing is tiny! I'd probably really cramp my hands playing it.

The new features sound nice and all, but I'd give them all up for more battery life. Hell, if they managed to give it a good boost (say 10 hours playtime) I'd probably consider getting one.

Geh, that does suck on the memory stick front - and I thought removing the UMD drive was supposed to not just cut size, but also improve battery life since UMD drives sucked power like no other? Weird.

well i'm probably going to get one anyways. but that sucks with the memory stick and battery life stuff.

Why the hell not use the pro duos? They are pretty small. We all have them. These better be well priced goddamn!

I'm a bit disappointed by the use of the M2 memory at first but then again it's smaller and slightly cheaper over here.

I carry my PSP 1000 with me all the time and I never ever had problems with the battery life. I wonder if anybody ever uses the PSP for that long without being able to charge it. On a plane, yeah, but if you travel by plane on a regular basis than I can understand. But if you do that you can obviously spend some of that money you're burning to buy a couple of spare batteries.

I'm still not sold on the whole digital thing. I know they'll replace your UMDs for you, but I like having the actual hard copies. I'll stick with my 1000, thanks.

The battery life is just weird. No spinning discs should = longer battery life, not shorter. And embedded? That's kind of a deal-breaker for me right there. If my unit has problems with the battery, I'd much rather buy a new battery instead of a new PSP.

Also, "clock and calendar functions?" Well, all the PSPs have a clock, but I guess the calendar's nice to have. Maybe some games will implement that as a gameplay function.

the memory stick part kinda sucks, also the accesories from the old psps won't work, and the bettary life will be reduced if you use bluetooth, so this is kinda sucking right now.... psp go+ go accesories+ m2 memory sticks + less battery = FAIL

The reason the battery is embedded is to make it harder for pirates. The reason it's still the same battery life is because the PSP Go is smaller and so is the battery, which offsets whatever you gain by removing the UMD drive.

3-6 hours is usable to me but certainly far from what I expected for my £250 or whatever it'll be over here.

Its priced to compete with the iPod Touch, right? So why no support for WIFI?? Also, Space saving M2 format? Why? Is a MicroSD too big? The whole thing is turning me off little by little.

This just keeps getting worse. Tell me a sensible reason why the hell wouldn't they just use MicroSD cards, other than their proprietary tech whoring.

I love (yes, I mean present tense) PS2 and like PS3, but their outdated corporate strategies of trying to force proprietary formats like this suck ass. Even Nintendo now lets you use commonly available storage mediums like SD cards. WTF is wrong with you Sony? Pull your head out of your ass already.

The memory stick thing is a non-issue as M2 sticks (i had to get one for my phone) are pretty cheap anyway. I got a 4gb for like $25 off of ebay I think.

The battery life is thoroughly disappointing though. 3-6 hours is how long a UMD intensive game lasts on the standard PSP batteries (I always get an expanded life battery for like 40% more play time) so it sucks that I'd actually be seeing a DOWNgrade in battery life should I get a PSPgo.

Admittedly, I rarely play it for more than 3-4 hours without a charge, but even in the most extreme cases I still had the ability to switch out to another charged battery if needed.

$250 is DEFINITELY too much for me now. I understand Sony wants to turn a profit, but by all accounts, this machine doesn't cost any more (maybe even less) to make than the old PSP. What gives, Sony?

I hope this is actually 3-6 hours, not a best case scenario. Actual use of these systems always seems to give less than what the specs claim.

The price is a little steep, which is why I made this friendly petition which I will send to Sony once I reach a good number of signatures. If you have another idea, let me know as well. I am the very first signature.

Does everyone think just because there isn't any improvement in the battery life that the PSP go shouldn't be priced higher?
The PSP go is a lot lighter, thinner, smaller and in my opinion very sleek.
If you're not happy with what they have done, then don't buy it.
