PSP Firmware v6.00 is out, exciting as ever photo

You know what the PSP needs? That's right, even more Firmware! It's only been a few weeks since the last intrusive update, so let's have another. This time around, it's v6.00, and as usual, it doesn't add very much of interest at all.

Here is what Sony's Eric Lempel says we can expect from the new Firmware:

  • For those of you looking to customize your XMB (XrossMediaBar), a few new colors will be added under the Theme Settings. These new theme colors can be used on PSP models 2000 or after (PSP-2000, 3000 and N1000).
  • A security patch has been added.
  • [Network Update] has been renamed as [System Update].

People who are not Sony make the update sound slightly more interesting with news that you can also sort downloadable games into folders, which is doubtless being set up in time for the arrival of PSP Minis and the PSP's push as a key digital platform. It won't have much use now, but eventually you'll be able to sort your games into PSOne Classics, PSP Minis and original PSP games.

So yeah. The best feature is one you're not going to need for a while. I love Firmware updates.

Dammit Sony! How do you expect firmware hackers to do their job when you keep changing the goalposts!

I know I'm compelled to upgrade because I reeeeeeeeally want to try Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman!

Bah!

@JustLikeBuck why do you need a FW upgrade for "holy invasion.."?

The HIOP,B! demo was removed from the EU PSN store this week because it demanded FW 5.56 or something. The only people who had that FW was people who bought FF Dissidea. Now this FW is out, I can play it!

You know what the gaming community needs? Gaming "journalists" (word used very lightly there) who complain about any update to a gaming device if it doesn't specifically mention something they consider worthy!

" Gaming "journalists" (word used very lightly there) "

And we need more commenters who think that claiming I'm not a journalist is an insult, when I've repeatedly stated I don't consider myself a journalist, and would never want to be a journalist.

Yep! Because we don't need any naysayers in our society, who push developers and industries to provide better updates to their expensive technology.

It's people like Jim, who constantly berate Sony's bad marketing strategy, that help them make better advertisements (that sell half a million PS3Slims), and address customer concerns while all the yes men are content.

Hey at least Sony is Honest about its firmware. Look at Nintendo, Aside from 4.0FW all other firmware updates were useless and they never told you a single thing about it. Still, optimisticaly, Firmware are key to sucsess, (look at X360) so hopefully they give us a good one.

@Jim: Well, at least you are honest about that. Still sucks to see your attitude in the news.

@Magnalon: Yup! Because they've never provided an update that improved performance, fixed bugs, provided better tools for developers, added new functionality, or anything. Because we know taking each update individually and criticizing it for not providing something of relevance every time.

Look, it's people like Jim who just criticize. Their criticisms haven't lead to anything but further fuel for the most annoying flame wars out there. Guess what the #1 thing that gets people moving is? Competition. Not people on the intranets.

"Look, it's people like Jim who just criticize."

I don't "just" criticize. I criticize things I find bullshit, and I happen to think that new Firmware every couple of weeks is over the top and bullshit. You disagree, but that's fine. We're paid to editorialize our news at Dtoid. If we didn't do that, we'd just be another IGN, and the world only needs one IGN.

An opinion on a publication that sees around half a million hits a day, with google ranking residuals, is definitely going to be in the back of Sony's mind.

PR constantly checks gaming websites for people's opinions: it's not just competition that dictates service. More and more now with Twitter, developers are searching hashtags (#) for statements about their games, and trying to address consumer concerns. To say they don't take this into account isn't realistic.

Without disturbing anyone that is.

And to those who complain about the lack of "journalism" on destructoid: Come on... There are plenty of "serious" sites out there, this site is really good to deliver the news, but in a more entertaining way. Kudos Jim!

yes and no- on firmware being the key to success- the problem is that when you constantly update firmware to copy protect your games you are only encouraging CFW developers and discouraging consumers- I am a big fan of CFW and I purchase games, but since they are really big as of late to pushing up the FW reqs for games I am left with a choice- do I purchase games and lose the functionality that homebrew and emulators give me or do I just not purchase the games- in the end I am just not going to purchase the games unless a compatible CFW comes out. In the end it is sony's loss because it would have been $ in their pocket if they weren't spending so much time trying to thwart CFW

Can't we all just agree to be happy that Sterling didn't do another Spiderman-pron or man-in-thong pic for the header?

It's pretty sad that Sony's already pushed it up to v6.00 when I can remember downloading v3.00, so I totally see Sterling's point.

I never called you a nobody. You're the one who seems to believe that of me, actually. I was just trying to explain why I share my opinion on posts. I know some people don't appreciate that, and that disappoints me. I was just hoping that maybe you'd get why we do what we do, is all.

I wouldn't worry about it. Anyone who can't see the problem with these blatantly anti-consumer firmware updates has gone so far down the rabbithole of corporation-worship that you can't really reason with them.

You know, sometimes, I'm pretty happy that all I have in my backpack is a DS Lite; I've never had to deal with any firmware upgrades at all. I know they'll be waiting for me if I ever move on to the DSi, but I think I'll relish in this era for just a bit longer.

They're few and quick on the Wii, but even then, firmware upgrades are annoying. Then again, it's irritating on the Wii because the damn thing glows blue once one is available. You site there staring at it (most likely while playing a different console) thinking "I haven't turned that thing on in weeks... Do I really want to switch it on just to upgrade and get that damn blue light to turn off?"...

Gets me every time...

Now wait, hold on a minute...

Granted, I've had my complaints about Destructoid in the past (mainly about many editors' choice of random, bizarre headers), but come on, aren't the opinions and the editorialized news the reason we all come to Dtoid? You could go anywhere else in the whooole internet to find a cut-and-pasted press release, but it's here that we have the pleasure of people who aren't robots (ironic, considering the logo) taking the most boring of news and spicing it up with their own personalities.

I could certainly do without any more upskirt shots on Dtoid though.

@Jim: Nah, I'm not calling you a nobody. Just sombody who typically complains about things in a manner that I find common with most trolls and console war fanatics. Trust me, I don't dislike all your stuff, but these type of posts just, IMHO, aren't beneficial to anyone in the community except for those who'd rather spend more time measuring their ePeens than actually gaming. Others call it entertainment, I call it the same dreg I can get from posters on N4G.

@BenHaskett: Actually, no, I can't find a single news site out there that A) actually provides up-to-date news on all things gaming console related and B) doesn't put their own spin on the majority of the articles. Would love to find a place, but in this day and age I don't think that's likely to ever happen.
Benzido's Avatar - Comment posted on 09/10/2009 11:47

@Dizzy Maybe rather than saying my comment is dumb, you could explain why you think it's dumb? It seems to me that Sony has put out dozens of firmware updates, most of which have only one significant feature - being that it becomes harder to put hacked firmware on the device. Then they make it so that new, legally purchased games, cannot be played without the newest firmware, not because the firmware has some new functionality, but because they want to force people to use official firmware. How is this good for you as a consumer? It's just another case where the paying customer is treated like a criminal and made to jump through hoops which the pirates don't have to jump through.

My favorite part about firmware updates is that I usually get them when I buy new games, so I can't play until I install them, and I can't install them until my battery is fully charged, so I can't play them for about four hours after I originally intend to.

FW 6.0 Too little, too late. I finally modded my PSP simply because of a consistent dearth of any sort of exciting or critically acclaimed games last summer. I don't pirate videogames, but If I can increase the functionality of the system (i.e. efficient media players, fully customizable themes, etc.) then why would I wait for Sony's OFW to catch up?
