PSP firmware v5.51 is on the way ... for God's sake photo

It's time for Sony's billionth PSP firmware update! If there's one thing that pisses me off about the PSP, above all else, it's that in between every game for the system that's actually worth buying, a new update appears. This means that not only do I barely switch my PSP on, but when I do, I have to sit through yet another update screen. This has happened with the last three or four games I've played, and it's getting quite beyond a joke.

This update provides no features, with Sony's Eric Lempel feeding us the usual "software stability" line. This means it's another one of the PSP's quite unnecessary updates that exists solely as a futile attempt to curb piracy and irritate anybody who legally buys games and wants to just play them. It's not like the PSP has much battery life anyway, we don't want to waste precious time with updates when we're on a plane and want to get to the frigging game we foolishly decided to buy instead of torrent.

Sorry, but Sony's obsession with firmware updates really gets on my nerves.

It has nothing to do with it being sony"

Why are you quoting one of our pre-built tags? That's from our tagging system and has nothing to do with the thread.

Strange post is strange.

feel free to edit that part of my post out then, i assumed you did that one yourself. this may not be apparent but i don't work at destructiod and i am unaccustomed to how you write your tags or really what you were hired to do or how you are supposed to do it.

Still, my statement remains true an has yet to be discredited, firmware updates are an entity of their own which give you benefits which while may not be apparent to you are of no less benefit than any other stability update on any other piece of hardware.

Okay, we're having an interesting debate now if we're focusing on this part.

Let me play Devil's Advocate and agree that the firmware updates are truly all about software stability. Would the sheer volume of updates not concern you that the PSP, on its own, is rather badly made to require so much updating? The DS doesn't rely on so many firmware updates and has never had a problem. Not even the Xbox 360, as shitty as its hardware is, has required as many updates as the PS3 and PSP. What does that say about the interface of those systems?

That says to me that Sony keeps releasing broken shit and then has to go back and fix it. That's what constant firmware updates tell me.

To be honest though, how many game breaking hardware crashes have you had on a psp i am going to assume isn't modded :p.

Nintendo is known for scaling back hardware because it's familiar and easier to program with and is more stable. It's completely expected that their hardware would be reliable, which hilariously wasn't the case with launch wii's and their hardware issues, despite some occasional bricking which happened on the 360 as well, ps3 had some of the best hardware reliability in it's launch phase. I had 2 RROD's 1 bad wii GFX card and 1 wii drive breakdown, no ps3 issues to speak of yet.

More on topic, again how often do you actually see your psp breaking? i have any number of friends and acquaintances who have psps which work perfectly fine sans some really old ones with stuck pixels.

It's not the credibility of the core system i was throwing in question and your article had nothing to do with the system coming out broken.
TBH isn't referencing the launch window stability of the system somewhat moot, when all things considered recent/new purchasers will never see any of those old "broken" issues, and current owners are far past this time as well?

This update probably just fixes the 5.50 Tiff crash discovered a while ago. Dunno why, there's no hacks based upon it yet, but there is a CFW 5.50GEN-A...

The point is, Sony shouldn't really be releasing a system that has needed *this* many updates, which means it's either meaningless busybodying, fruitless anti-piracy measures, or fixes to a broken system. None of those reasons are enough to make me feel better about putting up with bullshit when I want a demo or I'm trying to play a game while traveling somewhere.

It's a handheld system. The firmware update system, especially with such regularity, is not suited to a portable gaming environment.

i'll agree with the firmware issue not being suited to the portable environment.

A big seller is the get up and go play functionality.

I think the need to update firmware should be optional, or allow background downloading.
There should defiantly be a balance between getting in and playing an downloading required firmware updates.

I'm of the camp that firmware is necessary essentially and sometimes you have to take some bad tasting medicine to keep you 100%. I simply don't think it's fair to call sony so harshly out when all they are doing is actively supporting creating a more stable environment.

At least they're not 3Gig service paks a'la windows.

i don't think you know what a douchbag is.

If exercising some form of humility and offering a concession in my opinion is being a douchbag to you, then i have to salute your not-so-douchbag action of attacking my credibility indiscriminately with your not-so-douchbag vin diesel avatar.

agree with commander poopy pants buri is just a sony fan boy, and thus should be ignored, or a employee of sony themselves, and again thus should be ignored he starts of bashing jim for saying that FW updates are a pain in the ass, then says that the FW issue is not suited for a portable enviornment.....

i have had the PSP-1000, PSP-2000, and so far i have not had one technical problem, that said i seemd to have to update the firmware a hell of a lot untill i hacked it, since then i have not had to update my firmware once, and have not had a single hardware issue.....keep saying that its for t3h st4biliti3z untill you believe it, i sure as hell dont....

Uhm, what the fuck just happened?

I personally don't think there's anything wrong with those updates. I do have a problem with people bitching and moaning about what Sony should do for them personally. One guy likes a lot of firmware updates, the other guy doesn't. So fucking what?! It's funny that when Sony waits a while to update the PS3 people are bitching again! It takes too long, we want a new update. You can't have everything you want, get over it and enjoy the bloody games for a change.

@ Takeshi why are you comparing ps3 updates to PSP? i do not have that waste of money console, and think about it if you get a game for a portable, and that portable's battery is at 45% say, you end up having to wait somewhere in the vacinity of an hr just for the batt to charge, then the update goes through, all with providing nothing usefull to the client, i have not looked into PS3 FW updates, and what they contain, but since the web browser update on the PSP (4 yrs ago) i have not seen one single thing that sony has put in their FW updates that make it worth the hassle, and the locking of your system.

problem for anyone, this is a good thing by any standard, despite the very slight inconvenience, i as well hate waiting for updates for my ps3, but you know what? if that's what it takes to ensure my hardware continues to perform like i expect it to, then i'll take the lumps. it's anti-piracy. of course it is. it's pretty ridiculous, i suppose, but what it really amounts to is ten or so minutes out of your life, during which there's plenty to be done. trivial thing to bitch about.

an unhacked psp is an excellent device going to waste, if you ask me. i use my psp more than pretty much anything and i haven't stuck a UMD in it since lumines.
