PSP fire may have been caused by third party charger (not the fires of puberty) photo

You may recollect a news report we brought you in early February about a middle school student whose PSP caught fire in his pants, causing second degree burns and likely making the poor kid the butt of jokes for weeks afterward. It seems recent research is pointing in the direction of the after-market charger used with the system rather than the PSP itself. Pelican Accessories haven't made a public statement regarding this possibility as of yet.

Sheilah Clay, the boy's mother, commented that he is back in school but still suffers a lot of pain when the burns on his leg are cleaned. I'm glad he is okay, and equally glad things are pointing away from Sony when it comes to this incident. It seemed like just another reason for anti-game enthusiasts to preach the evils of video games. I hear they read Destructoid these days.

Third-party cell phone batteries are known to be as volatile.

I wonder if this is covered by warranty.

It is good that the kid is okay, that would hurt alot. (would have been funny if he was a ginger kid though. Lol ah the mirth)

Still, Pelican are a shit third-party company. All of their stuff is shit. When I was younger and the N64 came out, I got a Pelican expansion pack for it. "Sure whatever" I said. The games played fine but after EXACTLY one hour every time, the N64 would freeze.... fucking Pelican. At least I got the proper OFFICIAL expansion pack myself soon after.

The point is, I don't recall any third party products (apart from the Wavebird for the Gamecube) being worth getting. Just stick with the official stuff.

Dude, 3rd party accessories suck ass. I prefer the controllers given to my right out of the box on any system (excluding the logitech wireless ones for last generation's system's, they were well-made) and can't stand the crappyness of 3rd party ones. I totally believe it was pelican who's battery pack seared the flesh of this trumpeteer's trousers, and therefore I will never buy 3rd party stuff. Unless it's like, HDMI cables or something. Or like, organizers for stuff. Or a cooling unit for a 360 or something, BUT THAT'S IT.

The last time I bought 3rd party was a multi-memory card for the PSX, which decided not to work one day and ruined the many, many hours I pumped into Azure Dreams and Xenogears.

@SourGr8pes:

The same thing happened to me when I was trying to play through Vagrant Story. I've never bought a 3rd party accessory since.

Logitech anything is always worth getting.

So what's the consensus on Hori controllers?

I have a Pelican DS game case, it's pretty nice. Besides that, I prefer first party accessories. Nothing like the official stuff to work right and work all the time, although it does usually cost more.

Not surprised if it turns out to be true.

@ The-Excel

Hori products have always been excellent from my experience, and they're often licensed as official products from Nintendo and other companies.

You know what really burns my ass? Half-baked third-party peripherals.

There's about a million reasons not to trust 3rd party stuff... this is one of them.

I can remember the newspaper headline about the boy electrocuted because he was using a third-party charger (or something) for his GB.

I also remember that a third party control pad messed up my friend's ability to use his Playstation. He didn't have anything to do with the controller once it condemned his second PS.

I almost got electrocuted when I was fixing the poker machine at the Local arcade where I work. It was fun not being able to feel or move my left arm until I got the sensation back in it and it hurt like a mother f!@#$%.

Electricity is fun.
