PSP comes both first and last on sales chart, PSPgo fails photo

Further cementing the PSPgo's status as a hideous and terrible mistake, the latest Japanese sales data has revealed that while the PSP-3000 and its cousins have topped the charts, the all-digital variant is slumming it at the bottom. Sony's latest, greatest handheld is outclassed and outsold by its own family.

The PSP shifted 71,000 units this week. An impressive number, made all the more grand when compared to the pitiful 2,000 units sold by the PSPgo. Here are the full numbers for you to gawp at:

  • PSP – 71,186
  • Wii – 57,349
  • PS3 – 35,156
  • DSi LL – 30,418
  • DSi – 27,292
  • DS Lite – 6,574
  • Xbox 360 – 4,622
  • PS2 – 2,580
  • PSPgo – 2,027

Only Sony could be both a winner and a loser at the same time, so let us give the publisher a respectable golf clap. As for the PSPgo, I won't be satisfied until Sony admits the whole thing was a tremendous screw-up and promises that it won't happen again.

You wish, Jim. They'll just release the PSP-Go 3000 and say everything is better.

The Go sold less than the PS2?

Sorry, Sony, but that is pretty pathetic. If a several year old system outsells a several month old system, you have a problem. Especially if this is your way to 'revolutionize' the industry.

On that note, I hope it continues to fail so my games will continue to be disc/cart/UMD based, and I won't be forced to download them.

PSP-Go would be perfectly fine if Sony would just support PSN more (and lower prices on some of the games while they are at it).

We are all CheapAssGamers and if we have the choice between a a $20 UMD or a $40 DD, we will wear our awesome hot pink Fanny-Packs from 1992 to carry around the UMD in order to save $20.

The PSPGo is great except for one thing - the price. If it was cheaper then I'm sure it would be putting up much more of a fight.

Well, I had the impression the PSP sold very very poor even before the Go, so maybe the Go acted as a sales boost for PSP3000?

I would consider a PSP Go if the damn thing didn't cost as much as a PS3.

It's still at the "early adopter" price right?

Cuz when it drops to something more reasonable, i for one will be buying one.

Someone isn't a fan of Monster Hunter.

Really, the huge kick in the pants is the price point. $50 more you get a PS3 which can do everything the PSP can do, only better. (Excluding being extremely portable)

I could go buy a wii or 360 with the price point of the psp go. Spend a couple extra towards a ps3. The price is what is making the sales so horrible. I also don't understand why there was no umd slot. Why force us to buy overpriced digital downloads.

I don't see why it's a failure. The console may sell like crap but the margins they make selling the games must be huge. I mean, often the digital copy costs a lot more than the RRP of the physical version.

I don't think the DS would have been half what it is without the competition from the psp

Yeah, who the hell needs competition? Hell, lets only have one console too, theres no need for a PS3 or a 360 lets all just have a Wii.

Interesting how the different versions of the DS are ranked separately. Combined, they aren't too far behind the PSP sales.

PSPGO is doing it's job. Only a company as excessively wealthy as Sony(or Microsoft, or Google) could concept, create, advertise, and distribute a product to "see what happens."

They have to expect it to continue to produce poor numbers. But Rome wasn't built in a day and converting to a wholly(or mostly) digital market is not gonna be a quick transition. They have their Mark I model out ahead of the competition though and it has a lot of public awareness(even if mostly bad).

So, when the PSPGO-Faster(or whatever the heck they call future models) launches in a market more accepting of pure digital products they already have a foothold in the market, the infrastructure in place, and a brand they can direct the audience to. It's an expensive way to get things done, but if they really want to create an all digital market they had to start somewhere.

I own a white go, and I love it. I HATED the umd format, too cumbersome to carry around constantly imho. I got the 16 gig card too, its great. But as everyone else says, the psn store support is non-existant and prices are just too high for digi dist. wtf sony?

Do you really think that Sony are going to cease the development of the PlayStation 4 and throw away all that money just because they made one overpriced handheld?

REALLY?

1.PSP store needs to be a seperate store to the PS3 one. Sick of seeing PSP shit in with PS3 content. And vice versa.

2. They need to update this PSP store more than once a week. Huge library of games out there and a huge amount not on the PSP store.

3. They absolutely must offer UMD to PSN conversion. Accept people will get old games used to get a digital copy cheap. Make all new PSP games register to one PSN account. The original customer would a digi copy, and Sony would still be trying to kill the used game market.

4. UMD addon.

5. Kill it and push the 3000 more.

As soon as someone release custom firmware and an eloader I'm all over the PSPgo. I want Lumines on the platform or nothing doing.

I think it's a fair statement that Lumines is one of the best titles to come out on the platform and it's nowhere to be found on the PSP go.

I know why it's not on there but that doesn't change the
fact that it should be there.

The PSP Go had so much potential. If they could have gotten the licensing thing straightened out for owners of UMDs it could have been amazing. The higher price didn't help either.

"I won't be satisfied until Sony admits the whole thing was a tremendous screw-up and promises that it won't happen again" sorry but Digital Distribution is the future as much as i hate it to say, PSPgo is just an experiment, but since those north americans and Europeans are ok with downloads of full feature games we have to bend down and let us rape. no used games anymore, but pirated games are a lot cheaper. argh captain thats myn fair future sir,

As usual Sony made some terrible choices with the Go, but in spite of all that I traded in my old 2000 for a Go and I do like it.

All of the things that you know suck about it, do indeed suck, but it's got some good things going for it.

For me, I was either going to throw down $50-$100 on a new bigger mem stick for my psp-2000 (which also had a wonky d-pad I wasn't too fond of) so that I could download more digital content or I was going to trade in my 2000 and games and pay the difference (less than $100) to get a Go.

I went with the Go and am not really disappointed. They did a lot wrong with the system, but I am one of the rare people that most of the cons don't really affect me too much.

I wish it had a standard USB cable instead of the new proprietary one.

I wish I could download games on my PC using their mediago software without having to have my psp plugged in for the entire download... (This is a seriously retarded problem. When I am downloading large multi-gigabyte files I don't want to leave my PSP plugged in to the PC the whole time. I can download whatever I want on my PS3 and then plug my PSP in and copy it over so I don't understand why the PC is so stooopid...?)

I wish they stuck with the memory stick duo media so I could use my old mem sticks with it.

The volume/screen brightness buttons on the top are annoying.

Those are my biggest issues... on the flip side, I'm happy to go to digital media only, I like the pause/resume game feature, I like the size, I like the bluetooth features... I'm pretty sure there's some other stuff I like, but whatever.

Basically I just want to be an EARLY ADOPTER, y'all. But this is definitely not the device that is going to kill physical media. So you UMD lovers out there have no fear.

And talking about price drops, why isn't Sony going for that with the Go? Would they loose money either way?

I like Sony as much as Nintendo and Microsoft, but I have to wonder about their habit of removing functionality from their products, this generation. At least with the PS3, the price came down along with the changes.

I really want a Go. The price isn't soooo bad, considering you can get them all over online for about $200. There are plenty of games for it that I would like to play (yes, even on the store) and weirdly, I don't care about digital distribution for smaller titles (psp, psn, etc). As in, I am not too worried about selling my $30 purchase back to gamestop or ebay.

My only problem is... There HAS to be PSP2 coming at some point soon. That and I just don't have enough 'portable' time. I can easily play my ps3 at home and don't spend much time on buses/trains etc.

I don't understand why so many comments here are 'i want a psp-go (if it was cheaper)!' etc

Am i missing something? Can't the original psp models download everything a pspgo can download but with extra features(bigger screen, umd capability etc)??? (granted you need a mem stick but that's not hard or expensive compared to Go)

Even if it was the same price as the regular psp why would you get something that offers less? i'm really curious, i'm certain i've missed some crucial uber ability the Go has...?

I think this should be a wakeup call for the industry people who say that physical media is dead. Why would anyone only want to take a few games with them when they can just bring every game they own with them. Especially when they charge the same for the DL games as they do for games with actual physical components.
That, and if you're planning to launch a new console that really isn't an upgrade over your old one. Don't try to screw your old customers over in the process.
