Back in your school days, did you ever use the phrase "get out of my bathtub" on the swingsets? This weird phrase refers to two people swinging in sync. What the hell does that mean anyway? Regardless, the DS is in the PSP's bathtub this week, according to Media Create hardware sales numbers.
The number two selling system, PlayStation Portable, is sold pretty even with the Nintendo DS last week in Japan. PSP's 53,373 just barely beat out DS's 50,151. Gamasutra's chart of the top ten software titles shows only one PSP game, but it is Koei’s Orochi Warriors, and you know how Japan loves their historical epic action titles.
These days, Wii is king in Japan. Though console sales were down for last week, Nintendo still managed to move 63,504 units. Of course, titles like Wii Fit (#3) and Smash Bros. Brawl (#1) helped out a bit.
Sony's other two systems had a blah week, with 14,060 PS3s and almost 10,000 PS2s sold. The Xbox 360 was left flapping in the wind with 2,001 units sold, though BioShock made the top ten software list.
Do you have room in your life for two portables like the Japanese do? Are you a devout DS-only gamer, or have you welcomed the PSP into your heart?
[Thanks, JR]
I want the PSP badly, though. Konami and Square have completely sold me on the system.
I'm really all about the DS though. I currently own 35 games for it and I don't think I have quite a few of the really good games available. I've been playing Contra 4 for three months now, in between games like Professor Layton and Apollo Justice.
Hmm...yeah, DS FTW for me.
I would have picked up a DS (damn you Square, making me buy all the systems to get a hold of my Final Fantasy titles!) but to be honest I haven't been able to find any in my area.
I wouldn't hold your breath.
And of course the Wii will sell like crazy when Smash Bros comes out. And of course the PS3 will sell like crazy when MGS4 comes out. And of course the XBox360 and PS3 will sell like mad when GTA4 comes out. Rinse, Repeat.
never heard of it
Crazy how Koei games shift systems out there though.
handhelds FTW.
I don't own a PSP, the system is uncomfortable and gets dirty way too easily. Being mildly obsessive compulsive, I'd spend more time cleaning the goddamn screen than I would playing it. I play Playstation games on the television. I think Sony missed the point of a handheld when they created the PSP.
eh anyways. My Psp is just sitting on the charger..not being used Last game I played on it was DJ Max Portable and I'm too lazy to just go and find a Patapon ISO. though for 20 bucks, it's a game I don't mind just going and buying.
I play my DS more than my PSP obviously. Only cause DS has better games and PSP in Outside Japan just seems to suck for games. But DS lately has been having WAAAAAY too many Nintendogs copies that I get sick and tired of seeing.
Just because a game comes out doesn't mean you suddenly have to pick it up and the good games for the system are now somehow less good.
Honestly, I can't remember the last time I turned on my PSP. Not to say it's a bad console or anything, there have certainly been a lot of awesome releases for it over the past year. It's just that DS games are much more appealing to me(which could be because they're not trying to just squeeze home console games onto a handheld).
The only DS games Ive played for a long amout of time is the castlevanias, New Mario just didnt pull me in maybe it was the 3d, Mario Kart while a lot of fun was pointless online because of all the snakers, and Im just not interested in puzzle games.
On my PSP ive put a lot of hours into GTA, Lumines, Lemmings, Final Fantasy Tactics, Castlevania, and an absurd amount of time in DJ Max Portable 2. I have bought about 16 games for my PSP and maybe 7 for my DS. In all honesty though I dont understand the whole loyalty fanboy issue with handhelds, get both, its not like they cost so damn much.
Right now it's Jeanne D'Arc and Patapon for PSP,
before that it was Elite Beat Agents and Phantom Hourglass on DS,
before that it was Puzzle Quest and Crush for PSP,
before that Pokemon on DS...
I like them both, but to be honest, I prefer the PSP. Nothing on the DS has really surprised me. It's all stuff I've played before and while I definitely enjoy them, I'm not really blown away.
PSP on the other hand has continually put out games that made me go "wow!" when I first started them. I mean, Jeanne D'arc, Crush, Patapon, LocoRoco, Dead Head Fred, Lumines, and the list goes on.
Also, the video and music playback along with the homebrew (yes, I still BUY all my PSP games even though my PSP is modded) is just too much to pass up.
Yea DS is selling more software, none of it good. Just like the little white turd that could.
