PSP-3000 scanlines a 'hardware feature,' Japan does not mind them photo

Earlier we talked about how the PSP-3000 was return-worthy, mostly due to issues with the new LCD screen. It seems that I was not the only one that had beef with the "improved" screen, as Sony has released a statement (via PSP Fanboy) on the PSP-3000 complaints.

On some occasions, scan lines may appear on scenes where brightness changes drastically, due to the hardware features of the new LCD device on PSP-3000. Installed with this new LCD device, PSP-3000 offers more natural and vibrant colors on its screen, but the scan lines have come out to be more visible as a result of improving response time to alleviate the afterimages on PSP-3000. Since this is due to hardware specification, there are no plans for a system software update concerning this issue.

Great. So, no fix. Damn, and I really liked that new d-pad and buttons, too.

Even though the first reports of interlacing and scan line issues came out of Japan, it seems that the Japanese gaming public isn't too concerned. Game|Life reports that the PSP-3000 saw kick-ass sales last week, moving 141,270 units in only four days of sales. Maybe the beauty of their Pearl White and Piano Black units helped them to cast a blind eye to the scan lines.

It's like the old IT joke - it's not a bug, it's a feature!

That aside, I'm split between getting a new 3000 model PSP or getting an older 2000 one. If a "Piano Black" unit came out soon, I'd probably get that one.

Over the past year, sony seemed to be making headway into getting back into the customers good graces. The PSP is finally becoming a solid platform and was selling quality games.

You would think Sony would be kissing customer's ass at this point. They are behind in home and portable consoles so anything they can do to look better and more friendly would be in their best interests

I still don't see any reason to 'upgrade' I have a mic (which I don't ever use) and really like my white 2000. Darth Vader FTW!

This reminds me of the "PSP disc shooting" controversy when PSP first came out. It's not a bug, it's a projectile weapon!

I'm glad I jumped on the PSP-2000 bandwagon.

Can someone say more about the new d-pad? Is it really better than the old one?

to be honest, I can't imagine it bothering me that much.

it's a small screen and the games were never mind blowingly good looking.

If I was buying it as an upgrade from a 2000 or 1000 model I'd see this as large problem. But I enjoy my homebrew and such so I'll stick with my 1000.

May I quote crazy old Kutaragi?

"I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that."

All this for an updadted screen and a mic...

If you own a PSP I see NO reason to upgrade, I still play my 1000 version and it's awesome.

I dig on the 2000. Although there's problems with it now, the potential for TV-Out is pretty substantial. It's also got a few other minor bonuses, like extra ram.

Generally speaking, I think the 2000 is the best model.

killias2 - the new dpad seems more responsive. Also less squishy. The buttons also have a new lack of squishy.

Bought a PSP-3000 yesterday. I noticed the scanlines a little bit in the menu but nothing too bad. I then fired up Street Fighter Alpha and it was an absolute thing of beauty! Didn't notice any scanlines in game at all. I also watched National Treasure 2 on it and noticed how much that movie sucks. That movie could have used more scanlines!

Ok, so, the problem is that the hardware uses alternating scan lines instead of full frames. Wait, WHAT? Why the FUCK did they do that in the first place? The DS displays full frames. My pc display full frames. Heck, I believe the GBA doesn't use scanlines as well. this is a tv thing, why did they implemented that in a portable witch uses it's own screen?
I mean, seriously, does anyone can explain that to me? Did they do that to avoid v-sync issues?
