PSP-3000 hackable via service mode and special battery photo

You didn't hear it from us, but it seems that the new PSP-3000 model can now be um *cough*... unlocked.

The folks at MaxConsole say that this tough cookie is now crumbled via its service mode. Datel has a new "tool battery" called LITE BLUE TOOL. Great name. By simply inserting this crypto processor based battery, the service mode in both the PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 will be accessible.

The LITE BLUE TOOL will come with the option of switching between standard and service modes. It will sell for $29.99 in North America.

MaxConsole also has details on how Datel managed to pull this off.

“Although there were early indications that the PSP3000 had embedded Service Mode capability, it was clear that silicon level investigation would be required to understand the new mechanism” said Datel.

They used circuit extraction [whatever the hell that is] to reveal the service mode functions, and then put together their new product. There you have it, PSP-3000 owners.

[Thanks, Prof. Pew]

Get this: I've been internally debating between the 2000 and 3000 for the past couple months. Yesterday I finally made up my mind in favour of the 2000, and I was just about to leave work and strut off to the nearest store to buy it. Except I just casually thought "let me check Dtoid before I go..."

Unreal. Not that I'd be doing anything illegal with it, anyway. And it's not like I check Dtoid during working hours, either. Okay, one of those two statements is false. Honest.

It should be telling for Sony by this point that hacking their console is something that will be done. People want it. They will break Sony down and get what they want. Every time.

It was only going to be a matter of time before somebody hacked the 3000.
Trouble is, do I really want it now?

Well, it's good to know I'll be able to use my custom firmware when my 1000 finally gives up the ghost.

service mode doesn't mean running unsigned code.
Dark Alex says we're still far from that

It seems like is only a matter of time to hack the PSP. I don't have a PSP, but if I would think in purchasing one, I guess it'd be a PSP-1000, mostly because of the battery... Perhaps a 2000 model and a 1000 battery, I'm not sure, but a 3000 model, never!

If you have an old PSP1000 you can MAKE this battery.

The battery putting psp's in service mode is pretty OFN, but i'm glad the new one cannot escape it ;).

It's a quite easy to hack a psp once the battery is made, I've used my psp exponentially more since I've hacked it.
