PSP-3000 disappoints, Best Buy's return policy saves the day photo

I really wanted a PSP-3000. The technobabble in the press releases and coverage got to me. Promises of a better screen and a built-in microphone teased, and when I saw the pretty colors behind glass in Sony's booth at the Tokyo Game Show, I was sold. I went to Best Buy earlier this week and purchased the Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters PSP (PlayStation Portable) Entertainment Pack, which features the PSP-3000.

I've just returned it.

For something I wanted so bad, I was quite disappointed in the final product. It made me wish I could have had some hands-on time before I purchased it. Luckily, Best Buy had no issues with refunding the full purchase price.

Hit the jump to see why I returned the PSP-3000.

When I ripped open the box, my goal was to see how much better the screen was for myself, but when I picked the PSP up out of its slot in the box I was immediately struck by the paint job's finish. It's a matte finish, which is fine, but it seems baked on, and almost looks spray painted. In direct comparison with a PSP-2000 or even a 1000 model, the 3000 looked cheap. The flat color looks great in photos, but close up, it looks bad. Taking the battery cover off and looking at the back side of the panel made me feel even worse about the paint job. The inside of the UMD door left me with a similar feeling. Finally, I'm not sure, but I think the metal ring on the back is now just chrome-colored paint.

So, back to the screen. From first boot, I was impressed. The screen definitely seems to put out more color. The whites looked more white and vibrant, and I was even impressed with the boot and menu screens at first, but there was something different about the image that I couldn't put my finger on.

Nevermind what I said about the screen before. It wasn't until I did some back-and-forth comparisons that I noticed that the colors seemed washed out, and that fast moving objects left interlacing lines on the screen. The first game I played, Valhalla Knights 2, didn't show that much of a difference, but it's a slow-moving game with little color. I did notice some color differences, but one didn't look worse than the other. SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1 looked brighter, but less saturated on the PSP-3000. Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness looked way worse on the 3000, with the dark backgrounds never looking as nice as they did on even a PSP-1000. Silent Hill: Origins was the final straw: blacks didn't seem black enough, and the edges of some objects seemed to have protruding lines and jaggedness.

The new screen seems to give too much detail, if that makes sense. Edges of 3D characters looked rougher on the 3000. Ignorance is bliss, they say: the PSP-1000 and 2000 never showed jagged corners of polygons. If this is what this "improved" LCD brought about, I wanted no part of it.

In a final attempt to salvage my purchase, I toyed with the new color settings of the PSP-3000. Unfortunately, it seemed like each setting was compromising something about the picture, and I felt like I shouldn't have to play with settings to get an optimal image.

Ultimately, the ghosting on the PSP-2000 and 1000 was never an issue for me, and I never missed the expanded color palette in the first place. The Mystic Silver paint job looked terrible to me, even when compared to a PSP-1000. It seems like Sony cut corners to get a "better" screen in there. Hell, even the new power adaptor felt cheaper! I will say that there was something nice about the d-pad on the 3000, but that wasn't enough to win me over. That $200 could be better spent on more games, right?

I'd say that if you have a PSP-2000, stick with it. The only real benefit I see with the 3000 is a built-in microphone, but who uses that?  If you can, get some hands-on time with a 3000 first before purchasing.

What about someone who DOESN'T have a PSP? I decided I was going to save up for this model.

Thank you for helping me feel better about not waiting to get a 3000. I'll be happy with my 2000 now.

wow dale, you must have crappy ass eyes

The pictures quality is definitely better, I've shown my new psp 3000 to many people and showed comparisons of my old psp slim (not screenshots actual images from the screen) and everyone agrees that the saturation and colors are spot on, unlike the slim. Also ghosting has been removed as well.

Yes there is interlacing issues, but with a brighter and more color accurate screen with no ghosting, I can live with the interlacing issues.

that's too bad. The brighter screen seemed appealing to me.

I'll stick with my hax0red 1000 for now.

Dang. My launch unit died on me a few months back, and I was looking to replace it with a 3000. Are there still 2000s available at retail, and are they any cheaper?

Just yesterday I was playing tekken dark ressurection with a buddy (he was using his slim), and boy was the colors way different.

You can test how accurate the colors are by doing this:

Make sure your monitor is color accurate, get a wallpaper for your psp, compare what you get on the computer screen and compare it to the psp screen. Trust me, if its slim or phat you'll notice that the colors are washed out with a blue tinge, while the psp 3000 does a better job at being color accurate.

Anyone who says the screen is worst on the 3000 is lying to you, and interlacing issues was an issue that existed in the other psp models as well. The issue here is Sony (their usual lazy bastard selves) didn't fix the issue on the psp 3000. With the lower latency and color accurate screen, this magnified the interlacing issues that already existed in the older models.

I"m not saying you should buy a psp 3000, if you already have one, but if you're thinking of buying a psp, by the 3000 version.

Save your money and get a first-run PSP. Good weight, The screen is fine, and easy to mod. Best deal for the money. If you don't mind second hand, even cheaper!

saw that coming, honestly i wouldnt buy any new psp model unless it had a second analog nub, or something else thats a true improvement, not just changing the LCD, and plastics, which i know some would argue is an improvement, the above evidence speaks for itself, i figure sony just pushed the 3000 out to counteract the rampant piracy and cot costs even further

I find this quote from dale hilarious. Guess what, games were made with the psp 1000 in mind. Its just like playing ps2 games on a HDTV, the games sure look like crap, because the games were developed with such a high resolution screen in mind.

I rather have a clean, color accurate, low latency screen, than blurred, washed out screen, that hides imperfections.

This makes me happy, actually. I bought a red PSP-2000 about two weeks ago, taking advantage of the sudden price cuts due to the new hardware. I was having second thoughts, but now I cuddle with my shiny non-interlaced PSP.

Dale, what did you say to Best Buy to get them to refund the purchase price? I would have expected them to turn you down as soon as they saw it was open or make you exchange it for another PSP anyway.

Seems like the frequency is maladjusted.
I can make my DS do the same by messing with the two flat "screws" under the battery place. One controls the upper screen, the other the bottom one.

Honestly I didn't see this coming, but it doesn't matter anyway, I still have a 1000 model and it's hacked up just like I like it. I would be pissed if I got a 3000 because there is not yet a way to hack it, and that was the entire reason I bought my PSP in the first place, so I could have older console games on-the-go.

I'm pretty sure this is just a defect with the first batch, considering some people say the screen is much better with no problems, while others say it's worse in every way. Anyway, if I were getting a PSP, I'd wait a little while to see if the problem gets worked out.

Wow... one reviewer mentions that he didn't like it and all of a sudden all the clones take it as gospel?

I had a 2000, bought a 3000 and gave my 2000 away. I like it A LOT better.

The new finish makes the thing much easier to hold, is much lighter and it's brighter too.

I love it. Sounds like Dale must have got a bad unit or something.

So Sony says that this is a "feature" relating to the increased brightness.

I guess that's the best way to fix a bug: call it a feature!

Is that what Microsoft does with their Windows products?
