PSP $169 price drop. Idea: keep waiting photo

A variety of sources with more child labor than us are reporting that the PSP will drop to $169 tomorrow, making it still $50 more expensive than the world's most succesful video game console ever. Talk about a tough act to follow!

While this may be enough to entice late adopters to pick up a PSP, I leave you with this frugal thought: wait even longer to buy one.  Why? Yes, further punishing Sony for that AllIwantforxmasisapsp is a good one. But seriously, take a look at what is happening on Ebay for the PSP aftermarket. It's a joke. At the time of this article the highest bid I found was $70.  So heed my frugal prophecy: I'm sure that once this news breaks into the mainstream you'll probably be able to pick one up for about $100 easy. You've waited this long, why not wait another month? After all, you can't use it as a new Final Fantasy paperweight yet.

This incredibly unpopular idea has been brought to you by NieroIsAbrokeAssThisMonth.edu.  So what do you think -- PSP 2 redesign coming out in a year or is this mobile living?

I don't want it, the motherboard are probably the kind that won't accept homebrew.

Plus, I've already got a PSP.

Mmm... you didn't search completed items.

Plenty selling for not terrible prices.

More importantly, you should search completed auctions for "liberty city stories unpatched". That's the real story of the PSP :)

It's ludicrous that Sony has waited this long to drop the price, and even then, it's only 30 bucks? The system should be 129.99, value pack, if they want to continue pushing them. They can't cost much more than that to produce them.

Could it be? I think I feel it... the urge to get a PSP. It's in the pit of my stomach... wait, wait... *burp*. Nope, sorry just a burp. Oh well.

I bought one recently on ebay for 45 bucks and it works perfectly fine. Unfortunately I still don't really use it.

That's exactly my point. The guy that will care about a $30 price drop might care that PSPs that sell for $120 might drop under $100 if you know where to look in a month

I sold my PSP back in January for $170 including a stack of nigh unplayable import games. Which means, I essentially sold the PSP for $120 and some games.

Consider me OVER the PSP. I have lumines on my 360. Sorry sony, you had your chance and you blew it.

somewhere in the US is a chunky lil 10 year old ADD case with a pushover for a soccer mom who will spend her stipend from dad's mid management job to buy their corpulent lil terror a PSP b/c his likewise casual and uninformed peers have all had one since it was released.

I'll buy it if I can have the gold one in the picture for $169.

I don't see why anyone would pass up the PSP for that price. Despire what you may hear from Nintendo Fanboys the PSP has a pretty solid library of games. And many of the older classics like WipEout Pure and Daxter can be picked up on the cheap.

170 dollars for a system that you can't even save your game files on is ridiculous.

I've only seen 512k cards for the PSP anymore, so thats about 30-50 bucks depending on where you look.

So we're looking at about 200-230 dollars for a system, before you even get a game. Whereas my DS I can get for 130, and get at least 4 games for and still be under that price.

I'll stick with my DS thanks.

Now you can use your PSP's Wi-Fi free at any T-Mobile HotSpot. So that is good I guess.

Yeah, that eBay link is for newly listed items, and that's why the prices are so low.

Used PSPs seem to be going for about $130 after shipping and roughly $150 for a new one. Seems like about what they should be selling for.

And different sizes of memory stick are EVERYWHERE for cheap. Over the holiday season I got a 2gb SanDisk Pro Duo for $30 from Best Buy. No rebates no hassles. 1gb sticks are currently $30 on the GameStop website, so that should tell you how cheaply you could get it elsewhere.

The price won't go down now for a LONG time. Sony's was already very reluctant to drop it this far.

So much PSP hate here, and after the last few months, I honestly can't understand it.

Oh, and I'm not understanding this new T-Mobile hotspot crap. Just go to ANY coffee shop or internet bar with Wi-Fi and you ALREADY get the intarwebs for free. Frankly, just about any apartment complex will do just as well since so many people don't password their wireless routers.

When it hits about $130 I might pick one up to play Crisis Core, but not before then...Id be more likely to play it on a PC PSP emulator before Sony dropped the price to match the DS

Wow, I keep on failing. Two posts up, I meant "Destructoid", not Kotaku. Whenever I decide to check up on gaming, I make a Joystiq/Kotaku/Destructoid run, I often forget where I am :P

I need to get some sleep...

I still can't believe Sony screwed up the PSP.

I wanted one so bad when they were announced and now I quite literally don't even think I'd accept one for free. They just reek of unfunness. I actually want a Gameboy Micro more than a PSP. How sad is that?

Well with the rondo remake, and portable ops and killzone on it there are alot of fun games on the psp. I got my enjoyement out of it especially loading up some movie or series to the memory stick and watching a few great shows between gaming. Hell the gta and the 1st burnout rocked on it too.

sony is poised on having the best handheld they just do too many stupid things with it. Imagine if it was an xbox handheld and you could download your live arcade games and track your acheivements. On the psp uk site they have like 4 times the number of demos which is a great way to move games imho. They just need to get their shit together.

too little, too late. Sony's fallen too far behind in this gen of portable systems. While the price drop is a good idea, it's not gonna help them gain more ground. I'll just lurk EBay until i find one for a decent price for Rondo and Crisis Core.

I'll just wait for the emulator to play Crisis Core.

The PSP is such a massive block of fail, even Final Fantasy 7 doesn't make me want one. That's as it GETS, Sony. You Phail.

i dont agree about how the psp is not worth it. I have one and i'm happy with it since i first discovered homebrew. Nowadays i use my psp for: tetris and final fantasy.

Gradius Galaxies, Mega Man: Powered Up, the upcoming Castlevania, and Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins are the games on my list. LocoRoco too, though I heard it pretty much plays all its cards in the first level.

One more solid price drop and I wouldn't mind having one.
