Considering FFVII is the only title from PSOne I care about, this is ...acceptable.

I don't fricking care if it takes a 2-hour download to do it, I want to Vagrant Story and Xenogears and PE and FFs on my Vita!!!
Apparently the had Vita's at E3 showing PSOne classics. Although it was in beta stages because they hadn't yet supported wide screen or the analoge sticks yet. I've got tons of PS1 games thanks to PS Plus, which means this will be greatly appreciated. Should have been there from the start, but hey. Can't moan about a good thing.

So, wait. It takes them this long to finally bring the promised PS1 support to the Vita, and even then, there's a possibility that you might have to wait further just to get support for a particular title that you already purchased?

I really hope that Final Fantasy VI, Vagrant Story, and MGS are all supported. They really should push for PS2 compatibility... but at least we're getting PS1 soon.

Finally! I've got FFVII, Vagrant Story, and Crash Bandicoot already purchased. I'd love to have them with me on the go (granted I still have them on my PSP, but I would like them all on my Vita now. I'm out of town for the next month, so hopefully the update will come soon.

1) If they simply ported the PS1 emulator from PSP or PS3, it would open up a fucking mountain of security vulnerabilities. I'd rather not have the pirates fucking ruining the Sony handheld like they did the last one. Once the floodgates opened, publishers left the system for dead.
2) All of these games need be retested in the new emulator one by one in order to make sure they work completely. If they didn't, you'd have a post up next week bitching about it. You can't have it both ways. On top of that, all of this stuff has to be re-licensed.

QA on a bunch of emulated games can't take particularly long once you have the basics of the emulator working correctly. and while the games might need to be re licensed for use on the vita, sony already has active licensing agreements with all these companies due to their games currently being sold on the psn. It doesn't take the better part of a year to update your licensing agreements to include vita functionality.
I don't think most would care that much, accept for the fact that sony promised PS1 classics as a launch feature for the vita. Yet here we are almost 9 months out since the systems japanese release, and we still don't even have a date, let alone any idea how these will be distributed. The burden is on sony for promising features they couldn't live up to, especially in this extremely crucial launch window. There are very few exclusive quality vita games, so being able to play a library of ones already purchased ps1 games would go a long way to getting consumers interested. As it is though, sony is once again selling their system on 'future potential', and bald faced lies.

The PSP emulator on the Vita that allows it to play digital PSP games WAS ALREADY hacked and used to run unauthenticated code within the PSP emulator on the Vita. The LAST thing that Sony needs is publishers dropping support for the Vita due to piracy just like they did for the PSP.

Assuming they are using the same code framework for the emulation of PSX games that the PSP and PS3 use there's no reason they shouldn't be able to support the entire catalogue of games released so far the minute the firmware update launches. On the PSP back when custom firmware was all the rage you could convert ANY PS1 game (Not just ones released so far on PSN, but literally any PS1 game ever released) into a playable format on the PSP using a couple of pieces of software on one's computer, and it would run full speed and flawlessly.
