Good news for the PlayStation 3 is usually far and few between, so enjoy this little nugget while you can, Sony fanboys. According to head PR man David Karraker, the PlayStation Network (you know, that free but not quite as good Xbox Live for the PS3) now has "more than 1.3 million users worldwide." From Gamespot: This week, Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior director of public relations, told GameSpot that the PlayStation Network now has more than 1.3 million users worldwide. Of those users, 600,000 are in North America, where Sony has shipped over 2 million consoles. Worldwide, some 3.7 million pieces of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Network, though Sony did not specify how many of said items were games.
Even if you're a heated detractor, you have to admit those are some pretty good numbers for such a new service.

Well, considering you can register on a computer without ever owning a PS3, it's not that relevant a number. LIVE counts how many actual boxes connect to the service, while it seems PSN only counts the usernames. Not sure if it counts only Master accounts or also sub-accounts though
wouldn't it be logical that if they sell as many ps3s as there are 360s, then there would be more PSN users than Live? it is free, so i imagine more people that buy the ps3 would create an account than people who buy a 360 would pay for Gold. i mean, just about everybody with a ps3 and an internet connection will create one or more accounts. where the 360 will just have one Gold account per console (most likely), and plenty of cases where there is no Gold account because people don't wanna pay. this makes sense, right? sony just has to sell more consoles and they can go around boasting "the biggest online community" or some shit.
btw, the pic reminds me of the fact that Super Rub-a-Dub is MIA. wtf is with that?
I don't know what freaks me out more.
Nex trying to kill my parents, or the Duckie. O.o
DUCKIE...
Aww, you guys haven't mentioned the new PS3 firmware update yet. It looks pretty sweet.
You mean this? Which is actually linked in my post.

Good news for Sony, people are willing to connect to there free service. Being a Central Station member does that count too? It should, it was a hassle signing up for the most useless service ever if I ever will get a PS3 I hope I don't have to go through that again.
Summa wins. heh
BTW - Happy b-day Summa!
:O, my bad. I guess I missed it.
The stories fly off of the front page Magesx. I can totally understand how you missed it.
Wait is that 1 million gold members or,...erm....nevermind.
i love sony's online plan: free for all who want it!
btw HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUMMA!
What else are PS3 owners going to do? After beating Resistance and going through all the Blu-Ray movies in their Netflix queue, getting online is all that's left.
I don't mean that in a negative way, necessarily. I remember when the 360 first launched. There were hardly any games and I think I downloaded just about every free item on the Marketplace.
Also, considering the pricepoint of the PS3, the true fans are really the only ones who have bought one so far. I would expect them all to go to great lengths to seek out every good thing about the console.
I don't really find this all that surprising.
happy bday mr. wii fanboy! :D
good news. I see it tripling by the fall.
Nice, I’m one of those 1.3 million. PSN FTW!
And of course, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SUMMA!
The numbers are meaningless because the service is free. I own a PS3 and have a PSN account but I've never done anything on my PS3 except watch Blu-ray movies and mess around with the web browser.
Sony still has yet to demonstrate they even have a network. MotorStorm needed a patch to even have an in-game friends list and most developers keep complaining that they'd do online stuff if Sony would tell them how.
People don't realize that it's free for a reason. When you start seeing more and more games that are online on 360 and not PS3 (which happened all the time with PS2 and Xbox)then they'll understand why you pay for Xbox Live.
I am honestly rooting for Sony to be able to match Xbox Live in every way, game for game, because if they do, Microsoft will seriously have to consider doing away with Xbox Live service fees. I certainly wouldn't complain about that. God knows they're making enough off of overpriced microtransactions to subsidize the service. I just don't think online was given much more thought with PS3 than it was with PS2.
Now just imagine how large that number could have been, if Sony went without Blue Ray, and made the PS3 cheaper.
Still an impressive number. I'll give them that much.
"I CAN SEE YOUR SOUL" = Best caption I've seen in a long time. LOL
I'm still waiting for someone to say "It's not free online you have to pay $600!!!!" I love when people say that.
Yes skullivan, because you have that account, you are very likely to download their updates (seeing that you have to) when you have a psn account. That means that one day you'll get an update and then notice some new icons on your XMB and i'm gonna guess that you'll click on them eventually.
