PSN is Sony's basis for taking over the world photo

World domination. It isn't an easily achieved goal. Talk to any dictator with aspirations to rule over Europe or Asia in recent history and they'll tell you, it don't come easy. Sony has a plan though, and it starts by taking over every electronic you own and then building SkyNet. Step one in that plan is to use PSN as the backbone for all of its online service offerings. The tentatively named Sony Online Service was revealed at Sony corp.'s global strategy presentation and is a way for Sony to offer a single user experience across all of its electronic platforms. Part of this plan is that premium service that was announced at the same presentation.

At the meeting Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai outlined the strategy, saying that the system would support a single user ID across the entire service and offer consumers an "enhanced value" that will be delivered thanks to SOS's ease of use and universality. "The service will be launched economically and quickly by leveraging the PlayStation [Network] service platform. For example, key assets for creating a network service management system, payment system, and content distribution system will be shared with the PSN platform so that initial investment risk can be minimized," Hirai said while his presentation showed off PSPs, PS3s, Blu-ray players, Sony's electronic books, laptops, Walkman MP3 players and pretty much every other electronic Sony makes.

Sony also wants the SOS to expand into its mobile line-up and challenge iTunes' dominance of the downloadable media market. To demonstrate that Sony could be successful at this Hirai pointed out that the PSN already has 33 million registered users and those users download 25 petabytes of content each month. He then sat down in a chair, began to pet his white cat gently and laugh maniacally as he pointed out that the company expected to sell $50 billion dollars worth of downloadable goods on the service during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010.

Better than Microsoft's world domination i s'pose. It would suck if the whole world has to run on a sluggish Windows 7.

I think that pic should be carried around by Jehovah's Witnesses. If they do that they can finally, when they knock on your door, show you what heaven truly looks like.

It would be so great to connect my alarm clock, monitor, TV, VAIO, receiver, old school walkman, discman, phone, record player, VCR and consoles via PSN.

Blimey, that's even more Sony electronics I own than I had anticipated. Does Sony make refrigerators? If so I want one.

But... I already have this kind of kit set up, and I don't have a single Sony product in the mix?

I'm with Carl. I'm all for technology, but I don't need it controlling my mind, God dammit.

It's gonna be your mind controlling that stuff. Considering the amount of crazy people on our planet that's maybe scarier.

this is the way tech is going, and Sony is clearly hoping to dominate it but they are going to have to quickly recognize that people won't want a closed tech ecosystem when other products are going to integrate across manufacturers.

It will be like when the home computing market kicked off - Apple survived, through smart marketing and by targeting niche groups and having a closed system, everyone else survived by opening themselves up.

Sony needs to make their minds up whether they want to capture the elite tech market or whether they want a share of the mass market.

I'm talking about Sony as an overall company, not the PS3.

Eh, I have my money placed on Google taking over the world before Sony. See, cause Google has access to the way information is dished out to people. It only takes a few changes to a few lines of code, then BAM, the arrangement of sites change. LET THE INDOCTRINATION BEGIN!!!!

All in all though, isn't Microsoft beating Sony to the punch with this closed network thing. I mean, the Live ID spans Xbox, Zune, and Windows, and all the devices interconnect with each other and share the same "wallet". It just...seems like Sony trying to play catchup again.

...holy shit.

However Sony is kind of an ADD company. So I guess 20 years from now we'll see what happens.

It will get there in about 10 Sony years which is about 100 real years. They will keep releasing stuff half-baked products and ideas then keep twirling and updating until the version number runs out. I own Sony PS3, but I don't use it all that often. I bought it b/c I can and for the exclusive. Funny thing is I only played one exclusive game and didn't get to Uncharted 2 b/c too busy playing borderland and MW2 on xBL.

I can't wait. I'm already looking at these new mobile phones that can run remote-play to your ps3!

Would be awesome to be able to watch the films on my PS£ through my mobile at work - but wait, i can already do that on my PSP, never-the-less, still want it on my phone!

If Sony offers music with no DRM then I'd be happy to send some of my hard earned dollars their way. Seriously, what is Apple thinking charging the same price as Amazon for an inferior product?
