PSN is less juvenile than Xbox LIVE, says Zipper dude photo

Because of its popularity with the crass crowd, Zipper Interactive's Ben Jones thinks of Microsoft's Xbox LIVE service as "more juvenile" than PSN.

"I actually consider Xbox LIVE the more juvenile of the two," Jones told GamerZines during an interview at the currently ongoing London-based MAG event. His reasoning is simple: assholes say the darndest things over LIVE. "Each service has its own posse," he continued. "I think the PlayStation audience definitely fits more to our game [MAG]."

We're guessing that his opinion will shift to somewhere in the middle if Sony manages to actually get a headset or two into PSN users hands. Until then, though, Jones totally has a point -- LIVE subscribers hear and dish out a lot filth or idiocy over the service. LIVE users also pay for the pleasure of putting a parrot next to their Avatars. We're actually having problems figuring out which is the worst of the two.

No. It's the larger of the two therefore there are more juvenile people but that doesn't neccesarily make it more juvenile. The ratio is still the same.

But what would you expect them to say?

More people using headsets on Live = higher the chance to hear douchery, since... the negative talk is usually what people tie their experience to.

You can still be an asshole without using homosexual slurs and profanity. Anytime you give someone complete anonymity and a chance for communication, they will act like complete morons. I'm sure PSN is no exception, although XBL gets more attention.

I think it is because of the popularity of Xbox in general that you run into those people more on Live than on PSN. I also don't think the PS3 attracts as many young people. Us older folks tend to be a little more attached the the Playstation brand, and the design as well as BD playback attract us to it. I don't mean to speak for everyone, but that is how it seems in my circle.

WHAT A SHOCKER! A company that is a part of Sony saying that PSN players say less vulgar language! Who would have thought?!

But seriously, who doesn't love trash talking, swearing, cursing, and shit like that?

Of course no doubt, almost all commenters on destructoid are juvenile judging by their language content in their posts.

Actually in the MAG beta I'd say about 50% were on mic and it was rare to get into a squad where someone else wasn't on a mic.

I don't have an Xbox and have never played on Live... but my own experiences with PSN have mostly been positive. I use a mic and play mostly online shooter games - warhawk, killzone, the Mag beta for over 4 months, COD. It's rare to run into a trash talking idiot. In an average 4 hour gaming session I might run into one - which is pretty good considering I rarely play with a group and just play random sessions.

With MAG, most people on mic were really good. They talked strategy and coordination. Sure every once in awhile you get some idiot that gets all "you must respect my au-thor-i-ty!" [insert imaginary picture of cartman], but that's just game frustration speaking.

... and I apologize if I called you a dickhead for not following my waypoint to the frago! :)

What Ghouls said. Also, with the ease in which you can copy dozens of people on a single message with PSN, it leads to spam / chain messages. So yeah, both are pretty retarded. They may be my favorite medium, but video games aren't exactly the realm of the sophisticated, intelligent, or even washed.

I have yet to have a problem with PSN, I really don't get why people bitch about it. I play games on there like Killzone 2 and RFG with no lag, minus the minor hiccup. Nothing ever goes wrong with the mic channels. (Minus the beginning stages of MAG beta but that was Zipper's FUp.) Everything on PSN is set up with ease, I think the only people who have problems with it is the Xbox Die hards who have to pay for their service and are butthurt about it so they have to make up lies and false claims over PSN.

I think this has to do with one simple fact: The Xbox 360 costs less than the PS3.
Therefore, more parents buy the Xbox 360 for their children then buy PS3s and that means more 13 year olds calling everyone a fag because they think it's cool.

And, no, this is not exclusive to Xbox. I play a lot of MW2 on PS3 and there are definitely a lot of annoying jerks making racist, sexist and homophobic remark on there too.

I think the more mics = more idiots argument is correct.

I'm surprised the PS3 still doesn't come with a mic. My guess is all the juveniles can't afford Bluetooth headsets, and only the older people get on them.

Juveniles, when you think about it, would probably pick the 360 for stupid reasons like because "it's cooler, and has Modern Warfare 2 DLC first/Halo".

I only have a 360 so I have no basis of comparison. However, the fact that I play multiplayer with the mic on mute and the volume all the way down should speak for itself.

However, if I owned a PS3 I doubt I would play it any different.

I think this gen is living proof that some people shouldn't be allowed to talk.

Me (psn) and my brother (xbl) see the same amount of people talking (so it doesn't look like the lack of included headsets on the ps3 impeded people any if at all). Its getting them to shut up that's the trick.

Both me and my bro refuse to put our headsets on if where not in a party with our freinds.

The 360 costs more than a PS3 if you add up the xbox live costs over the years, so...it's actually rich kids who are buying the 360 and poor adults who are buying the PS3.

XBL is more juvenile because they're younger. I thought I read something about the average age of each system, and PSN's was a few years older. Of course, I bet most of it has to do with the size of the community. More Live users = more likely to have some obnoxious dbag. If in game chat was big last gen, I'm sure the PS2 would have had the bigger problem.

But yeah, I have a headset with the 360 because it came with, and don't with my PS3 because it didn't.

What's with this bullshit about headsets and PS3s? Unlike with 360, you can use any bluetooth headset with PS3. I've got one, but I barely use it, since I feel like a special person wearing one of those. That's why I've never used headset playing Live, 360's headset is just fucking ridiculous.

You guys know that the reason every xbox has a headset in it is to give people a reason to buy XBox Live. No other reason. Its that mentality "well I have this, I better put it to use". Also packaging it with it, since it increases the XBL revenue, they just comp back what they spent on the headset in the box. PSN isn't subscription based. Therefore packaging every PS3 with a headset wouldn't be business smart unless they were comping some of that money back per subscription.

hold on there. A great deal of PS3 user account names have plenty of obscene or suggestive things in them, the only reason their not spouting out curse words and faggotry is because they don't have mics. The few that do either don't use them because they would be talking to themselves or they use them to share their latest custom beat for half an hour in a Modern Warfare 2 free for all lobby, or to simply cuss out everyone who kills them or they kill without any opposition. If every PS3 user had a headset it would simply be a cesspool equal to or possibly greater than the XBL community's. After all, anyone who owns and plays a PS3 does have radical and usually wrong point of views; at least all the PS3 fans i personally know.

He's making a ps3 game, of course he'd say that. I agree with most here though, the fact that microphones are more accessible on the 360 means you have a lot more people saying stupid stuff. I would think though, that with the psn being free, you probably actually have more kids using that.

i answered that with the addon of "at least all the PS3 fans i personally know"

and if that needs clarification, i meant everyone i know personally, with relations in person instead of the internet, that owns a PS3 usually has a point of view on their console, and games they play that is pretty ridiculous and not open to suggestion at all. Like MGS4 and Demon Souls being the only good games ever except the other games only released on the PS3.

It's become one of those things. Birds sing, sun shines, 360 gamers are 'juvenile' and sun sets. Sometimes it rains. Moving along.

I have a headset on my PS3 but I don't really talk when I play, I get into the game to much. I ALWAYS mute people who whistle, or have their kids screaming in the background but mostly it's people who swear for the sake of swearing about anything and everything that I mute the most.

If you don't have anything to contribute to my game you are getting muted. Kinda like how I wish retarded crackheads who steal and shit would not exist in society, I like my games that way too, lol.

I only chat online when I am playing with my friends, other than that no mic for me.

Of course they're less juvenile according to him.
I mean aside from the fact that like Naughty dog his game is being released SOLELY for the PS3 platform, of course he's going to self represent. He likes money so it makes sense to PR the shit out of his home platform, both for his games benefit, and the benefit of SONY.

lol, this stuff just serves to make me laugh.

It's like what Jim was saying once on Podtoid; "They say this stuff without really believing it to get people riled up and talking about their product more. And the funny thing is, it actually works REALLY well to serve that end objective."

I mean, how many times have you heard MS PR dissing PS3 related stuff, non comitally I might add?
I'd wager it's quite a few times.

PR people are so predictable, lol.

Maybe its more down to the fact that a large scale FPS is something you assume would suit the Xbox better. So to explain why its being developed for the PS3, the developer explains it as too highbrow for the Xbox and something a bit different.
Or maybe he was doing the inevitable pre launch wind up dance. If that even exists..

Xzyliac: Do you have any evidence for that or are you just pulling idiotic comments out of your ass again like every other time you post something? Given the lack of hard evidence you presume too much. From my experience I'd say the ratio is certainly lower on PSN.

Brad: In the MAG beta most people seemed to have headsets, the majority of them with decent quality sets as well.
