This game of one-upmanship between Sony and the PS3 modders is getting seriously heated. Responding to the news that Sony was permabanning modded consoles, a new hack claims to worm into the PSN and allow people to unban themselves.
The hack can also be used to ban another console, although they'd need access to that console's ID, which would have to be obtained from a refurb warehouse/secondhand seller or willingly given up by an idiot.
The mod scene is justifying its actions by calling Sony bullies and criticizing its strong-arm tactics. Sony, of course, is sticking by its EULA and claiming to protect its interests.
Whichever side you find righteous, there is no denying that this war is going to get even more bitter -- and likely more idiotic -- before it's all said and done.
[Thanks, MatthewRD]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Still it's gone from "eh, not much harm done" to "Okay now this is getting a little silly". And I honestly have no idea what Sony can do about it, either.
Humor: This is kinda funny in a way
Sympathetic: If they bought the system they should be able to do what they want
Angry: Those assholes are stealing games and are ruining the industry
Fear: I don't want to be wrongfully banned by Sony or a Hacker
Turned On: just kidding
Nonetheless, if I ever get a PS3, it will definitely not be for online play.
true hackers don't brag and whine they just do. posting about it isn't doing much about anything.
especially when the post says "only when someone gives up their system id though, so its not really an issue"
But Sony has to do what they feel is appropriate to protect their interest. The annoying part is the folks with non-modified Ps3s are the ones who have to sit through FW after FW update that seem to add little in terms of added functionality...
they also want to ban people just for fun?
hackers this days...
Oriville or Jiffy Pop?
Prepare for six stories having to deal with these people.
Not only do they require a legit ID to ban someone, they also need it to get themselves unbanned, and it will only work for one or the other purpose. The instructions say they can't do it with a random ID and they have no way to get legit ID's apart from blind luck or scamming.
The worst part is, as always, the people that'll be hurt the most will be the people who aren't involved in piracy/hacking/etc.
Future proof my ass.
This crap is just ridiculously childish now.
Oh, Jim, when will you--wait a tick?
The hack can also be used to ban another console, although they'd need access to that console's ID, which would have to be obtained from a refurb warehouse/secondhand seller or willingly given up by an idiot
Wats this about Jim saying random ID'S?
"The hack can also be used to ban another console, although they'd need access to that console's ID, which would have to be obtained from a refurb warehouse/secondhand seller or willingly given up by an idiot."
Jim Sterling beat you to the punch.
I side with the hackers.
Hackers just want to be able to connect to PSN like anyone else. They, too, are customers; they purchase games from the PlayStation Store, and they also download patches for games that they legitimately own too. Yeah, sure, there are a few bad apples in the bunch, but the same could be said of those who blew up the World Trade Centers: not every Muslim is out to kill you, and not every hacker is out to cheat on Black Ops.
Stop generalizing.
Not being able to take advantage of the online experience (which includes patches and DLC) is the whole trade-off of modding your console. We've known this since the original Xbox.
So, Sony should service non-paying customers who break the EULA and ruin the experience for legitimate, paying customers? What kinda business model is that?
