If you fondly remember an age where coin-operated arcade machines were king, you may feel nostalgic about the pricing structure of Trash Panic's latest incarnation, which utilizes a similar pay method on the Japanese PlayStation Network. It pretty much works in exactly the same way.
With 100 Yen Gomibako, players are expected to drop 100 Yen in exchange for three play sessions. Once those three chances are up, it'll cost another 100 Yen to get back in the game. A "Charge" button rests in the main menu, allowing customers to easily purchase more credits.
There are extra benefits, too. If you play the game on Normal Mode, you have a chance to win rewards for PlayStation Home. Further tie-ins with Sony's online "service" are also in the works.
What do you think of this idea? It's certainly an interesting scheme, and could really work well for a few old school arcade titles. Of course, it all depends on how much cash customers are willing to pump into these things. I'm sure if (or maybe when) a similar idea hits the West, we'll need more than a handful of quarters like we did in the good old days.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
This is basically like PAYING for a demo.
This won't fly on American soil. Not if I have anything to do with it.
Which I don't.
Anything that makes the virtual console look like a good deal in comparison must be a fucking rip off.
PappaDukes, apparently the guys at Giant Bomb LOVE the game, as they have discussed it several times on the Bombcast and said it's addicting.
Subscription based gaming is wrong IMO. :(
I'm with Topher on this one, Trash Panic did nothing for me.
@pappadukes
Trash Panic is TRASH !
If you go into it knowing that every level is actually a puzzle with only a few workable solutions, you'll probably enjoy it.
I feel it's well worth $5 for the few hours I've put into it. Though, as was said, it's frickin' hard, so don't expect to beat anything past the first level on the first try.
Whatever happened to owning arcade cabinets and reusing the same quarter? Wasn't that the POINT of spending thousands of dollars on your own equipment? That you didn't have to invest more money just to keep using the shit you already have?
I love the products of Asian culture, but sometimes I don't get some of the shit that they do.
