Tablets are made to function much differently than a portable gaming device. The UI and programs are just a small slice of how they are different. Now the Wii U GamePad is NOT a tablet since you can't take it on the go. As soon as the Wii U is powered off, the device becomes useless. The fact that it stores no information on it and requires another device to constantly be on in order to useful is a dead giveaway that this is not a tablet. Glorified GBA/GameCube Connector sure, but Tablet...no way.
This is pretty crazy to me that this is a confusing issue for some people.
I guess we're just in different camps, then. I'm excited BECAUSE it's a lot like the Wii, which was my absolute favorite gaming platform this generation. Underpowered or not, NO other gaming machine saw as much playtime for me than the Wii did, and I don't own a single family-oriented title. I also think the Wii Remote+Nunchuk is the best control scheme we've ever had if programmed correctly, but I sincerely doubt I'm speaking for the majority when I say that.
We're getting an HD Nintendo console, and personally, that's all I really want. I don't need it to have photo-realistic graphics. But I do have to say, I agree with you about The Witcher 2 on PC. I just got a new gaming machine that can run that sucker at 1080p with almost everything turned up, and yes, I want a Zelda that looks like that. :P
@Sheeva
Did you even think before you typed that, or was it just sporadic?
You're thinking of only one kind of tablet, that is a tablet computer, such an Apple's iPad. Not all tablets serve the same purpose or function. In the end it doesn't matter what people call this thing, but trying to argue that all tablets are the same and that people aren't allowed to use that word for slightly different things is just asinine.
I'm inclined to say that the anus is not a tablet, because the touch interface is not flat, but I'm absolutely inclined to wall the Wii-U controller a tablet. Plus, I think "Nintablet" is almost as catchy as "Wiimote."
Pictured: A Douchefriar.
Seriously, I google image searched "douche friar" and actually got a result. God I love the internet sometimes.
Go look up "The ugly Duckling"
...^___^ /Evil grin
@long John
The ds came BEFORE the Iphone.
More like a douchefriar. Or douchepontiff.
I am implying that this article is a satire, just like Holmes does damn near every week. Did you know that tablets only have multitouch and never buttons? Did you know this is a public service announcement?
How can you not recognize the humor? I could see if this was an isolated incident, but this is a staple of weekend Dtoid. Do you not remember the time he trolled Penny Arcade and they bought it, then he had to tell them it was a joke?
I want to make fun of him, I do. He perfectly exemplifies a Douchefriar.
But goddamn it, his rushing touchdowns saved my fantasy football ass last season.
Total Douchefriar though.
Dependency has nothing to do with it. It's a tablet form factor. Thus, there's nothing wrong with calling it a tablet(-like) controller, which honestly is all people have really been doing. That is not to suggest that it is the same thing as a tablet PC.
For me, a modern "tablet" is a thing that has a sleek form factor, is designed to be carried around, meant primarily for media consumption (games, movies, books, music, e-mail and surfing).
Basically, the gist of my argument is that "tablet" to me means "a laptop that's smaller, easier to use on the go, has a longer battery, but doesn't do as much". And the Wii U controller isn't those things.
TLDR version of the below (please don't read below because it's pointless):
Tablets are for: Reading, Surfing, Movies, Games, Music, etc.
GamePad screen is for: Movies, Games, ... Games (and Nintendo's web lol browser lol for five minutes so you can use that "curtain" feature to reveal Goatse to your friends).
Here's my brain spillage (don't read it!)
Now obviously the Wii U GamePad is going to be able to do a lot of these same media things. But the games you'll be playing will be completely different (except for Angry Birds which is confirmed for literally every console and device... but not Wii U [yet]).
Wii U games will incorporate the touch screen, and some might even use it as the primary form of input, but a stylus-based design will create entirely different gameplay experiences than the standard multitouch of current tablet devices.
Movies: The Wii U controller will probably be used for these quite a bit, with Netflix and whatnot. Not that I'd ever want to watch a movie on a little screen when the HDTV is right there; I'd rather just play Mario or Tetris on it if the home theater is occupied. I don't watch movies on my tablet much, either, for the same reason. So basically, my argument doesn't stand up much on this aspect. Onto the next...
No one read books on this thing, please.
Music, that might work. I can see using the controller to listen to music before bed or something (with headphones of course). But here's where tablets and the GamePad diverge: You're not gonna gather 'round the GamePad to listen to the latest album from The Killers. Meanwhile the HP TouchPad (tablet) has surprisingly high-quality speakers that can easily fill a room with pretty smooth jams.
Also, all these games, music, movies, and books can be carried directly on the tablet device; whereas on the GamePad you'll have to stream them from your Wii U so you're obviously not leaving the house with it or anything.
I've said way too much already. The GamePad SHOULDN'T be called a tablet just because it has a screen on it that you can touch. It shouldn't be called a tablet because the term carries the idea that said device will be capable of certain functions, many of which the GamePad is not intended for.
Massive walls of text?
Name calling?
Over this shit?
Please. Must be a slow news day.
Also it's a tablet. A shitty tablet. A gametab. And it's going to rock.
Holmes is a troll, then?
When you need to tell people it's a joke (because barely anyone/your audience), you're kind of doing it wrong.
A satire of what? Or whom? Is there a group of people complaining about terminology, that Holmes has decided to parody with this post? I'm not totally sure you are using the word "satire" correctly.
That said, I wish I could believe you. I used to think the same way. I used to really think Holmes was really just trolling everyone and I got a huge kick out of it. But I just don't see it anymore. Either he lost his touch or I saw one too many completely absurd claims and accusations that made me realize that the man is for real.
It's probably a satire of the kind of conversation that happened in the comments section. Lots of semantics that don't mean a good god damn being argued with vehemence.
Shit, everyone seemed to take it serious when he wrote that article about Keith Apicary being kicked out of PAX. Shit's super dry.
And whats with the tone of this article? it almost sounds like he has taken personal offense to the connection people have made to the controller and touchscreen devices like the ipad and what not.
relax buddy. its completely warranted. And although it in itself is not a tablet, aside from it not having multitouch, when it comes to gaming, web browsing, and who knows what apps that eventually get released, it will act just as a tablet does in similar situations.
also, it doesnt need multitouch because it has buttons and control sticks. Thank god. Automatically making it leaps and bounds better in the control department than any tablet, multitouch or not.
Wait...
@Alan: You haven't got back to me on my douchfriar questions bro. Wtf?
What happens in the Douchfriar Temple stays in the Douchefriar Temple. All I'm saying is show up with a clean towel, brother.
Video games are supposed to be fun. This is why you negative assholes are so awful....the wii bashing and the constant complaining....it doesnt really need to be a constant state of mind. Learn to enjoy this hobby one of these days....you might not be so uptight and dumb in the head, you're not as insightful as you think.
Dtoid, STFU about social issues that are already shoved down our throats everywhere else. Its lame, and its ruining the site.
Whatever Apple does seems to dictate the perception of anything similar in appearance. Whether other tablet PCs offer different functionality, they are compared immediately to the iPad because of their appearance. Android phones have always been similarly compared to the iPhone. The market leader tends to be the benchmark of comparison for similar products.
This doesn't fall neatly into those categories, but it is different enough from a standard gamepad that people struggle to find a concise description that encompasses its appearance and function. "Tablet controller" isn't the best, but it gives some indication of what the thing is and does.
If Nintendo is dissatisfied with the perception, they should address it through a branding campaign to shift perception away from tablet comparisons. Other than that, people will always describe things in the most convenient way possible. This is a controller of fairly standard design, except that it has a prominent touch screen in the middle of it. Ergo, tablet controller.
have to be a nerd and point that out.
