But knowing the world they probably wouldn't

Honestly though, this one sounds much less like SOPA and much more like a digital Patriot Act. Which is -more or less- just as despicable, because its going to feed on peoples fears of terrorism to get support, while really having agendas that have nothing to do with those things.
I wish sometimes we'd just get to ask these people "what will it REALLY be used for?"
Unfortunately, this means everybody needs to get more involved in politics :sigh:
Begone! BEGONE I SAY!
Seriously though, this bill sounds a bit too similar to "three-strikes-out" legislation, such as they have in France. No country should strive for something like that...
I think we all see where this is going though. This shit is just going to keep coming back up over and over and fucking over again until SOMETHING eventually passes, don't you think? I don't think our goal should be to stop them from passing any kind of internet-related legislation whatsoever, as much as I'd prefer they didn't. I think a more realistic and reasonable goal is to make sure that the bill that inevitably DOES get pushed through is as harmless as possible, that way everyone can just shut the fuck up and move on.
Isn't that how these kind of things always start, though? First they get there foot in the door, and just keep changing the rules until it matches what they wanted in the first place.
It would be nice if we could settle on such a compromise, but it seems highly unlikely.
-_-;
I don't really want to start arguing the slippery slope theory when we don't need to do so. See, here's the thing. I don't think these people that are authoring and sponsoring these bills we hate are evil people. I don't think they're doing this out of malice or even necessarily greed. I believe these people think they're doing what's right, to improve things, and they believe that because they're ignorant.
I should take a moment here to point out the difference between ignorance and stupidity. They're not stupid. I don't think you can be truly stupid and get into such a high elected office. I do think you can be ignorant though, and that's what I think is happening here. I'm ignorant of how the touch screen on my PS Vita works. I'm smart enough to understand it, I just don't possess that information. That's ignorance. These people in congress writing and sponsoring these internet censorship bills are smart enough to understand why they're wrong, they just lack the information necessary to reach that conclusion.
Thus I think its our job to continue trying to educate them. I realize we've BEEN trying to do that for quite a while now, but I think we need to KEEP trying, because you have to understand, we're not the people they really want to hear any of this from. It'd be a bit like passing a law against esports and having a bunch of people in Ryu t-shirts telling you why that's wrong, ya know?
I do believe we'll eventually get through though, and I do believe there's some merit buried deep within this bill somewhere. Intellectual property (as in R&D, that kind of thing) does need to be protected. The patent system is a mess. Patent trolls are out of control. Something absolutely does need to be done, they're just doing it very very wrong. That's why I don't think we need to be fighting every single bill of this kind that we see. We need to seek an amicable solution for everyone.
I don't think they are necessarily bad people or anything like that. (Although I wouldn't' be surprised if some of them where actually stupid... ^_^;)
I didn't mean to come off as thinking that.
However, as you have said, you don't have to be a bad person or intend malice to do bad or stupid things.
Over the last year we lost the right to protest with the Trespass Bill, the right to due process of law with Defense Act, and the Obama Administration has all be confirmed that the government can kill you at any moment if it deems you a "threat" in the aftermath of the target killing of Anwar al-Awlaki.
I honestly don't give a fuck anymore. We have more important shit we need to start caring about. Wake the fuck up, kiddies.
I wish I could think they were all just ignorant. But after some of the stories I've seen where politicians straight up take bribes in exchange for favours to corporations and executives it's kind of hard to see this as, 'I'm sure they just want to do good things that help everyone, but they're just ignorant.'
In America it's legal for politicians to take bribes from corporations. As long as that is true I don't think the government will ever really be for the people.
I can multitask. I assure you, I'm paying attention.
@taerdin
I really don't think things are nearly so cloak and dagger as that. I freely acknowledge the fact that lobbyists and campaign contributions and the like can give the appearance of impropriety and that sucks. I wish it wasn't that way. That doesn't mean everyone in congress is a corrupt scumbag though.
Seriously, think about it. If there really was that much corruption, you know someone would be blowing the fucking lid right off it on a daily basis. There's no way EVERYONE is in on the conspiracy. Some pissed off congressman that doesn't think he's getting his fair share, some journalist wanting a Pulitzer, some no-name blogger who wants to be famous... someone would be spilling the fucking beans.
Point being, the appearance if impropriety isn't the same thing as outright cronyism and corruption. And hell dude, even if it is, what can we do about it right now? We're certainly not going to overhaul the entire legislative branch of the american federal government between now and the time this bill goes to a floor vote. We've got no choice right now but to work within the system we've got and hope the revolution will be televised later.
This with Europes new spy on everyone thing.. The internet is really going to shit.
We need a new internet that is for the people.
