PSA: Comic service for PSP launches today photo

Just a heads up, guys! If you have been looking forward to downloading comic books for your PSP, today is the day to do it. At 3pm EST and 5pm GMT, Sony's much-lauded PSP comics service will launch, allowing you to browse and purchase comics for your PSP's digital reader.

The service will be available in North America, the UK (exclusive Ireland for technical reasons), Australia and New Zealand.

Hundreds of comics are said to be available, spanning such publishers as Marvel, IDW, iVerse and 2000AD. For a full list, you can check out Playstationcomics.com after the service launches. Should be quite an interesting new feature to check out, and I will certainly be making sure I do so. What about you? Want some Iron Man in your pocket?

I'm all over this. It's a pain to hunt down some 2000AD around LA these days.

Tried the reader with the free Star Trek issue. Frankly, it's too awkward and slow for the eyes to use. Nothing beats the tactile sensation and having the entire page in front of you like a real comic book.

By 'North America', I'm pretty sure you mean 'US'.

I prefer playing with the triple rather than the 360, that said, I'm getting sick and tired of having XMB updates for things I can't use, ads for features I can't have and official news updates in the native language constantly reminding me of things I can't own.

"We’re not quite ready for you yet.

We do plan to launch the service in as many countries as possible, we just can't be certain when. Please check back here now and then, and who knows..."

As bad as printed newspapers and periodicals have been hammered the past few years I don't think digital literature will ever really replace them entirely. I know I still love me some browse time at the local B & N. But paying $6 and up off the newsstand sucks.

Meh, comics should be read in paper form. Same for books. Reading things on a screen just bugs me.

And of course, your opinion should be the end-all/be-all of human choice, right? Who the fuck cares about what other people like? Or the real issues plaguing humanity.

I played around with the comic reader a few weeks ago and thought it was decent. Now it's just a matter of how much they charge for the comics. I kind wish they had some DC stuff as well. I've been in a DC mood ever since I watched Justice League again...

Ahh, I want to be enthused about this, since I dig both comics and games. But I really can't summon the energy, for the obvious reasons:

-With my pirate hat on, it's incredibly easy to go and grab comics online for free, more than I could ever read.
-Without my pirate hat on, if I'm going to drop money on comics, I'm going to go ahead and get a newsstand edition, or better yet a trade ppb. Easier to read, better looking, and you can lend them to anyone who's interested. Can't really lend e-PSP comics to anyone who doesn't have a PSP, which makes them less fun.
-A device like this really mangles the strong points of the media; you just can't slowly take in a splash page, you have to scroll and zoom -- you can do it, it's just discouraging.
-A lot of the stuff I read is indie anyways and won't ever make it here.

Ahh, well. Baby steps, I suppose.

Bathroom reading material! As long as it's easy to navigate, I'm all over this. I like comics and like going to the bathroom. So I'm the target audience.

Wait... why isn't this going to be available in Ireland? "Technical reasons"... what's that about? Rayman isn't available in Ireland either. Hmm.

I was really hoping for some Punisher MAX compilations to be up already, but alas, no luck. I really like the reader though, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The cinematic scroll thingy would work really well with that series.
