The PS3 is a gaming device, a Blu-ray player, a supercomputer ... and now a cinema projector? That's right, a number of PlayStation 3 systems have been spotted playing movies in Japanese cinemas, taking the place of traditional projectors.
The first story came from a 2ch member who was watching Kara no Kyoukai at his local movie theater, when the film was interrupted by a low-battery controller warning that flashed onscreen. As news of this occurence spread (and people tried to decide whether or not this was brilliant advertising), it was discovered that a number of theaters were using the same method.
Despite what some people believe, the Japanese cinemas aren't using Blu-ray. Instead, they are storing HD video on the hard-drive of the PS3, creating an experience indistinguishable from more common projection methods.
Oh PS3, is there anything you can't do?
[Thanks, Unangbangkay]

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
F***ing Awesome.
dont remember ,can you do that on the 360? play movies files that are not downloaded off of XBL? but played from a thumb drive (avi files etc)or copied to the HD and played like that?
Even though I knew the 360 and PS3 could do this I have never explored it beyond a couple instances. I have so much space on my console hard-drives that maybe I should take some time to mess with it. It would be a small but nice convenience.
That's the coolest thing I've read all day. Anywhere.
Anyway that's a cool idea which I'm sure many people will already have done or will do having seen this, a PS3 home theatre sounds pretty darn spanky.
Play PS2 games?
Bwahahahaha.
The Ps3 is the shit.
