PS3s working as part-time cinema projectors in Japan photo

The PS3 is a gaming device, a Blu-ray player, a supercomputer ... and now a cinema projector? That's right, a number of PlayStation 3 systems have been spotted playing movies in Japanese cinemas, taking the place of traditional projectors.

The first story came from a 2ch member who was watching Kara no Kyoukai at his local movie theater, when the film was interrupted by a low-battery controller warning that flashed onscreen. As news of this occurence spread (and people tried to decide whether or not this was brilliant advertising), it was discovered that a number of theaters were using the same method.

Despite what some people believe, the Japanese cinemas aren't using Blu-ray. Instead, they are storing HD video on the hard-drive of the PS3, creating an experience indistinguishable from more common projection methods.

Oh PS3, is there anything you can't do?

[Thanks, Unangbangkay]

I thought I was gonna be making a joke about Sony desperate to sell PS3s but that is actually pretty damn cool.

It was more likely a PS3 hooked up to a digital projector, rather than the PS3 being a projector itself. I take these things very seriously, Jim. I was a projectionist for 3 years, lolz.

this seems normal to me. i do this with non HD movies all the time. play them off my ps3 HDD or a thumb drive. just easier to have a bunch of movies on one drive instead of changing the disc to a new movie all the time.

dont remember ,can you do that on the 360? play movies files that are not downloaded off of XBL? but played from a thumb drive (avi files etc)or copied to the HD and played like that?

A PS3-turned-projector would actually fit with the It Can Do Everything tagline I saw in an ad for the PS3slim once...

@fetusmilk I've played a movie off of a thumb drive on my 360 before, just gotta make sure it is a playable format.

Even though I knew the 360 and PS3 could do this I have never explored it beyond a couple instances. I have so much space on my console hard-drives that maybe I should take some time to mess with it. It would be a small but nice convenience.

yes, apparently the blu rayz shoot out of the PS3's HD482-Modulator directly onto the screen, foregoing any need for a TV or projection device. Who knew?

Me and many of my friends, regardless of which console they have, have a hard drive with a couple of hundred gigs and a couple of hundred videos. I don't think either can read NTFS yet but the 360 reads HFS+, which works fine for any HD files one may have. The PS3 hard drive is best left free for games whilst a portable device is used for videos.

Anyway that's a cool idea which I'm sure many people will already have done or will do having seen this, a PS3 home theatre sounds pretty darn spanky.

My fantasy of playing video-games in a projections theater just got a bit closer to reality.

@alex1314159: If you lived in northern Maine, you'd be able to turn that fantasy into a reality. Spotlight Cinemas in Orono, ME, where I worked for the last half-year or so, has digital projectors that can interface with the PS3, 360, or Wii for gaming on the big screen. I actually played Rock Band 2 on the big screen with digital stereo sound on more than one occasion.
