PS3 wipes off eye-liner, removes black cape; 80GB model drops PS2 Emotion Engine photo

Remember when the PlayStation 3 dropped in Europe? You might recall that once everyone stopped whining about the price, they found something else to complain about -- PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility. It seems the problem was the lack of the Emotion Engine chip (found in the PS2), a hardware solution found in North American models of the PS3. Europe had to fend for themselves, instead having to deal with a software solution that left them not being able to play some of their favorite titles without noticeable issues.

Gaming Bits has confirmed with SCEA that the upcoming 80GB PS3 will not include the Emotion Engine, instead relying on the same software solution PAL owners are familiar with. This makes sense -- producing Emotion Engine hardware is likely far more costly than a simple software solution. In adding a larger HDD, it only makes sense that Sony had to cut costs somewhere.

Whether or not the backwards compatability will be similar to what we're seeing in Europe is unknown, but just looking at the backwards compatability list has me skeptical. It's noted that Bad Boys II: Miami Takedown "should play on the PlayStation 3 with some issues," and that's just completely unacceptable. Get it together by August, Sony.

if they made the 80gb model $550, i think it would be more enticing. it would have people saying "you get Motorstorm for almost nothing!"

how is it for more price if it is only $599?

BSD, I think I would have left out the word "only" in your statement.

Seriously though, they should have just included a game with purchase. Pick from Sonic (kids), Motorstorm (teen), or Resistance (Adults) and drop it to 499$. Keep everything else the same or even take out the EE and more people will buy. I don't understand the extra 20GB though. I guess that's just one of those "Bigger number is better" things.

Let's see, a lot of people seem to think Sony is getting the 80GB HDD for less than the 60GB's, take out emotion chip, pack in game cost Sony $20 (or less probably) and you'll be paying $100 more than the 60GB. Sony probably loses less money on the 80GB than the 60GB, but the 80GB looks like a better value to the consumer, smart Sony, very smart.

As far as the loss of the emotion chip, I don't think that will be a big deal. Sony still seems to have better BC than the 360 without it.

my guess is that they are going for some sort of "trickle down" method. next will be a 100gb ps3 for $599, the 80gb for $499, and then the 60gb either goes for $399 or gets phased out. if this is indeed what they are doing, the only question is how many different models will they have on the shelf at one time?

The software BC works just fine. I'm sure there are games that don't officially work on it, but there are thousands that do including most of the ones people want to play. If your collection is some weird ass obscure collection of Japanese RPGs you might want to check, but anyone with a mainstream collection should be okay. The BC is also improving, for example RE4 had some minor painting glitches in FW 1.60 but it works flawlessly now. Highly demanding games like God of War II play perfectly on the PS3 with no slowdown or noticeable issues.

@some_dude, doubtless that additional $100 probably only costs Sony a fraction of that to make, even if it turns out the new bundle contains rumble (and it might). I seriously doubt that Sony is losing a penny whether you buy the $500 version or the $600 bundle though. People are still relying on that iSuppli table when it is seriously out of date and off by hundreds by now.

the regular 60GB is $499, so for $100 you get a game and 20 more GB, that is $40 for 20GB!

You can play by your own rules, but you're not above the law.

40 bucks for 20 gb thats a pretty good deal actually =) At the same time the fact that the emotion engine is gone, I'm not sure how much of a deal it really is. I'm sure the emulation will get it right eventually?

@BSD - True, but that assuming you want Motostorm, which I don't. It would be nice if they offered some other bundled games instead. Ah, who am I kidding, they price stills needs to drop some more before I would even consider it, but Sony seems to be heading things in the right direction.

@DrXym

It would be interesting to see an update analysis of the components in these two SKUs and see how it all shakes out. But no one really knows the bottom line except Sony. Have a feeling they won't tells us the truth either. *smirk*

You can still get a 60GB PS3 for $500, not terrible, right?

The 80gig version is the same system with 20 more gigs and less backwards compatibility and Motorstorm.

I think I'll forgo the 20 gigs, get more backwards compatibility, buy Motorstorm separately and save 40 bucks, thank you.

Actually, I'm lying, I won't get PS3 til it breaks $349.

didn't they switch to emulation in the US anyway? with the firmware update that fixed the ps2 BC problems?

It's for more price because the 60 GB model is cheaper and includes the Emotion Engine chip

Hmm. Mixed feelings here.

Jokes aside about there being no PS3 games, how important in the grand scheme of things is backwards compatibility anyways? It's certainly a feature I care about, but then, I *do* have a PS2. Don't you?

However, unless the software compatibility is solid, this makes the 80GB SKU a poor value in my eyes (not that it was a great value as it was before).

In the very least, I'd expect software emulation to lead to cheaper systems, not more expensive ones! I don't buy for one second that 80gb costs Sony more materially than 60gb, and at this point, Motorstorm might be a good pack-in idea at any price...

I like backwards compatibility because I sell my old consoles to buy new ones that are backwards compatible. If the system is not backwards compatible, I have to keep that system, and therefore the net cost of the new system is larger and I take longer to adopt, being a cheap ass. Also, it saves entertainment system cabinet space.
