PS3 version of Resident Evil 5 comes with free mandatory install photo

Oh dear. It looks like the PlayStation 3 version of upcoming action game Resident Evil 5 will come with yet another annoying forced install that serves no greater purpose than to piss people off. MTV is reporting that their retail PS3 version of the game demands that 5GB of space remain on the PS3 hard drive -- the typical calling card of forced installs.

We don't have a retail PS3 version in our clutches (we're rocking a debug 360 version) but be warned that if this is the sort of thing that affects your buying decisions, it is there for consideration.

This whole mandatory install thing is incredibly annoying. I love my PS3, but I absolutely detest the amount of waiting around that needs to be done in order to get into a game. System updates take forever to download, game patches are considerably lengthier acquisitions than on the Xbox 360, and even things like installation of PSN games after download just reek of unnecessary bullsh*t that gets between me and my videogames. Far too much of my PS3 experience has been spent sitting and waiting for the console to gets its act together. We live in a "must have now" society, and the PS3 is too plodding and pondering sometimes.

If installs were optional, that would be one thing, but the fact that they're forced makes them incredibly obnoxious. Having to install every individual chapter in Metal Gear Solid 4, for example, was atrocious. Please Sony -- let's put choice into the hands of the players. Some of us don't mind an extra second of load time if it means we can play our videogames as soon as we actually put the disc in the system. Remember when videogames just played without all the pointless bells and whistles? Those were good days.

It helps if you think of them as foreplay.

PS3 games with installs seem to perform a lot better, so I don't mind as long as I only have to do it once. Metal Gear's multiple installs surprised me greatly, and have turned me off replaying sections of the game I enjoyed.

Are you sure it is 5mb? Every other Capcom game is 5 gigs..each one.
DMC4
Lost Planet
I heard SF4 had one too
and now this?

Capcom is NOT getting my money until they learn to program, and if it is 5mb only, its about fucking time they learned. Even if I do have over 200 gigs left on my HDD for my PS3, their games aren't good enough for me to install 5 gigs for each one of their games.

"They need installs because Blu Ray read times are slow."
Killzone 2 says hi.

100% agreed. It's a great game no doubt..still loved it. But I wish it was one big install instead of multiple small ones. Last I checked, the largest size for the MGS4 install was about 3 gigs. I would rather it be 5 for a great game like MGS4. Installs also get annoying the 9th time playing it through...(still dont have my stealth camo/bandana....)

doesn't really bother me ,but considering something like KZ2 did'nt require
installs at all it seems like capcom is a bit lazy, its been 2 years they have had more than enough time to overcome that.

I had it on reserve for 360, up till my 360 broke on Christmas, so now I switched it to a PS3 reservation. Oh joy. Thank god for this laptop to entertain me while I wait. Only a few days away! Whoo! Then an endless install time later or two I can shoot zombies all day!

Pain in the ass, but hardly a problem really.

Also, slow game patches? Not here bro, super quick every time - any downloads on my PS3 use up the majority of my 20Mbps line.

Capcom really needs to learn how to develop a PS3 game.
Street Fighter 4 was the exception, but in my opinion, the install was so vital, it was pretty much mandatory.
Goddammit, Capcom. I love you, but why do you keep hurting me?

I'd imagine most people if they have the room will install to hard drive on the 360 version as well, but as Jim pointed out, we should have the choice whether to or not.

I don't understand the bitching and moaning over installs. My SFIV online experience would be much more enjoyable if installs were mandatory. No load times if installed > 20 second load times.

I really do not like the installs however if it makes a huge difference in load times then it is acceptable. I mean you can always delete an install of you don't have any room, if its a game you really don't play anymore, its not like the saves a deleted.

I treat installation time as build up for excitement

The more I see the loading bar filling up the more that I feel I'm going to burst

And then when the game menu comes up, sweet sweet release!

Oops, I meant install times.

Oh and I don't mind the mandatory install times, but I like games (or developers) that put in that extra effort to make the installing screens awesome. Metal Gear Solid 4 comes to mind.

Damn, what will I find to do with those 20 minutes for the install?

Look, I'm annoyed as hell about mandatory installs since they'll just become more prevalent with lazy developers and will take up space on my machine that I'd rather be used for other stuff (Rock Band DLC, PSN games, music, videos, etc.). But complaining about waiting 20 minutes for a game to install when you're going to spend 20+ hours playing it afterward is really crying over spilt milk. Especially when you can use those 20 minutes to write up one or two blogs bitching about inane crap here.

Yeah, It's always annoyed me that I have to Install games on my psp after having downloaded them (sometimes, the install takes more time than the download). I'm surprised that they need to do this in RE5, but not in KZ2. Seriously.... What's up with that?

I just don't understand DLC installs. If you check, the before and after install size is pretty much the same. Why cant they give us a file that can be played as is? Thank god for that shutdown before download thing, it installs the files automatically after it's all done.

If I'm not mistaken, it installs everything that it is to be installed, even if it wasn't downloaded at that time, so you can save some time

Perhaps I can explain a bit.

In the case of how MGS4 works, as far as I've been able to gather, the game portion itself (textures, environments, ai routines, etcetera) would install on the hard drive, leaving the BluRay 100% free to stream all that uncompressed audio. Of course this means the installs between chapters also deleted the previous chapters data keeping MGS4 under 5 GBs at all times. This is one of the many reasons why I feel MGS4 would need to be completely retooled from the ground up before it's even possible on Xbox 360.

As for many of these other PS3 mandatory installs, this stems from DVD and BluRay differences. The way a BluRay streams and handles data is completely different from the way a DVD drive does. Because of this, a BluRay disc image on certain games look drastically different from a DVD disc image. Some companies, like the one mentioned above, are deved with the 360 as the primary machine and as such, are developed first and foremost as a DVD in regards to physical disc space. HOWEVER, on a lot of games, Capcom being the prime offender, the mandatory install is actually creating a "fake ass" dvd image on the hard drive that points to the BluRay for certain assets. In essence, they are putting a 360 game on PS3. This is how I've come to understand the process in most cases. Of course exceptions to this general rule can and do exist but in most cases, it's because the developer discovered BluRay doesn't read like a DVD and why not force the install? After all, it's an unspoken rule among the PS3 community that, while we will bitch, we'll also buy anyway.

Also, shame on you twits for jumping the fellow Sima Yi fan, Jim Sterling. Seriously, you console warriors are getting out of control.

The mandatory installs are probably the most frustrating thing about the PS3. I've found a way to get around this is when you start installing a game/update just play the Xbox for a couple hours. By the time your ready to play the PS3 another update will be required, rinse and repeat.

PS3's BD drive is too slow and it's very difficult to stream the game assets off of it, so the developers move those assets to the hard drive to speed things up a bit.

As far as MGS4 is concerned - the lengthy installations didn't help much for the infamous chase sequence, with loading screens every 60 seconds. That was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in a game.

It never really bothers me at all. I choose to install manually for everything anyways since it loads faster. As someone mentioned, blu-rays are way more compressed than DVDs so the way data is read is much, much different. Also, for the past 15 years or so I've been playing this really awesome system called a "PC" that has over 10,000 games and installs are always mandatory, so it's nothing I'm not used to :-)

These mandatory installs are bullshit, and since I sold my broke-ass 360 I have to get the PS3 version. Good thing I upgraded my ps3 hardrive to like 300gb. I don't know what you people with the factory hd do with all this shit.

We need to get the message across to gamemakers that they need to stop being so fucking lazy. And you fanboys aren't helping matters by bitching at jim. He's our most valuable asset to broadcast our concerns. I don't understand why you'd insult him and not Capcom for being fucking lazy. Are you really so jaded that you can't handle someone mentioning a legitimate problem?

The longer I'm a gamer, the more I get annoyed by gamers.

As a previously avid PC gamer, I don't have any problems with installs. e.g. I waited for a damn whole year for a game, I too can wait for more 15 damn minutes. This issue is somewhat blown out of proportion.

However, MGS4 was worse than atrocious. It really killed the replay value of some parts of the game. Playing alongside with my brother was painful, as we were in different chapters and every switch meant a dreaded wait. Given the situation, I never understood PS3fanboys making fun of 360 having to have 5 dvd's for it if it every went to 360. I'd have preferred 5 dvd's without per chapter installs over the mighty single bluray.

If you can't get over having to wait for an install after all this time waiting for Resi 5, That's really fucking sad.

Even MGS4's installs weren't that bad because you got so engrossed in the game.

Killzone 2 doesn't require an install? Killzone 2 and Resi 5's engine architecture will be totally and completely different.
and if installing could have gotten rid of the 5 second lockups for loading every 2 minutes on KZ2. I'd have installed it.

This is why I buy all my dual platform games on 360. I only ever buy the PS3 exclusives because I'm not going to get them any otherway. Resi 5 can still be installed on the 360. But like you say at least its optional. I think the only reason wy I didn't play MGS4 more than twice was due to those install times. how the hell are you supposed to keep that momentum going if your doing a speedrun? and if you do it fast you technically could be watching cutscenes for twice the amount of actual play time.

fuck optical discs. worst data storage medium ever. they are unreliable, slow, they get scratched, the lens you use to read them get deteriorated. the fact is that production costs for optical discs are virtually zero. it would be nice if this was also reflected by games' retail price, though.
