PS3 version of Fatal Inertia delayed again, this time possibly forever photo

Fatal Inertia has become a horribly fitting monicker for all the wrong reasons over the last year. Initially announced as an exclusive PlayStation 3 launch title at last year's Tokyo Game Show, Koei Canada's futuristic racer has been slipping further and faster from Sony's clutches ever since.

Quickly losing its exclusive status to an Xbox 360 conversion announced in November, and also delayed numerous times, first until spring this year, secondly until summer and finally to fall, the game has now sped as far as possible from its original configuration, to all intents and purposes becoming a 360 exclusive. Ironic, no?

Hit the jump for more.

While the 360 version of the game is currently set to ship on September 11th, Koei has announced that the original PS3 version has been "delayed indefinitely", and now lists only the 360 edition on the game's press releases. The reason?

the delay is due to the progress of the game engine for PS3.

Very strange that the 360 version of the Unreal Engine 3 powered game should have overtaken the original iteration of the title to such a degree, particularly with some developers starting to take a stand against the traditional "PS3 development is harder than fingerless mountain climbing" argument lately.

Will we eventually see the PS3 version? I'd suspect not for a good while. If the 360 version is only two months away from release while the PS3 is still having problems getting the engine to work, it sounds like we might be looking at some pretty hefty problems, and ones which certainly explain the game's previous delays. Whether the PS3 engine issues were part of the reason for the decision to make a 360 version in the first place can only be answered with pure speculation, but right now a lot of people at Koei must be breathing quite sizeable sighs of relief at the thought of having a back-up.

As an additional side-note, our resident Dynasty Warriors obsessive Jim has asked me to add his own comments to this story, relating as it does to his favourite developer of button-bashing slash-'em-ups. And his message? Simply this:

KOEEEEII! KOEI! KOEI! KOEI!

Thanks Jim.

Wait.

What the hell game is this and why is it so important that PS3 aren't getting it no more?

I feel i have missed something.

Common trend. PS3 loses exclusives. It's a slow news week before E3, c'mon :D

Release date for the Xbox 360 is September 11, 2007 and the PS3 release date is kinda up in the air, I confirmed with Gamestop and checked their site, its January 1st 2008 but we all know that Gamestop is kinda Untrustworthy. More information about Fatal Inertia can be found here.

@Garbz

Well, i guess the thing about this game is that it started out as a sony Exclusive but seems to be ending up as a 360 exclusive... in most cases of sony loosing exclusives, the game merely goes multiplatform for both PS3 and 360, where in this case the PS3 version is pretty much dead.

Its a shame too, because KOEI used to be Sony only until Xbox 360 came out and now they are going multi-platform. I hope they don't sell out to Microsoft. That would suck. I have no desire to buy a Microsoft console ever. Atleast they can tease us with some more PS2 titles til Next-gen consoles are finally accepted.

I'm pretty sure that someone from Epic (Mark Rein?) responded to this, saying that the PS3 version of UE3 is fine. And that it will be shown at E3. Oh well. I just sold my PS3 on ebay to get a new computer. You don't really have to worry about the PC losing games because of 'low install base' or it being 'hard to program for'.

I think the nextgen consoles have been accepted. I know for me at least that myself and my 360 are on speaking terms.

Jsun, a little biased are we?

I have no desire to buy a Microsoft console ever.

Care to explain why?

Yet Dynasty Warriors: Gundam pops onto the demo scene looking fine. Koei Canada needs some love from their Japanese brothers.

I just don't like Xbox 360 or regular Xbox. I've played Halo 1 and 2 and Gears of War and alot of other games and just don't like how the gameplay is. Maybe its the controller or just the fact that PS2 has better games than Xbox. More exclusive games like God of War and some of the Dynasty Warriors series and other stuff like Devil May Cry and God Hand. All Xbox 360 has is shooter games and well, thats about it. The games you play on Xbox are the kind of games you play on the computer.

PS2 > PS3. Xbox 360 = not too bad. Wii = 6 to 1 over PS3! Holy smokes, Batman, that's a lot of wiing!

The big question here is, has anyone played a preview of this game and is it looking any good anyway?

So is this more a case of 'Lolz Sony lost another exclusive to Microsoft' or 'Lolz, Sony lost a kick ass game to Microsoft'?

i think its less of "sony lost another exclusive" and more koei is having development problems with it and they don't want to put in the work. i don't know really, but this news really sucks.
