PS3 version of BioShock has a near 5GB install

PS3 version of BioShock has a near 5GB install photo
     Bioshock

There is nothing more exciting than buying a new PlayStation 3 title, unwrapping the plastic, and watching a mandatory download screen. According to 1UP, 2K Boston’s surreal FPS BioShock will give consumers just that opportunity. The game will require a near 5GB install, which roughly translates to ten minutes.

Of course, the PS3 version of the game is coming packed with more than just an install. According to the information that we previously gathered today, BioShock is coming packed with Trophy support, exclusive add-on content, challenge rooms, and a new Survivor difficulty mode.

The game is slated to hit stores on October 21, which provides ample time to appropriate a list of things to do while waiting for the install to finish. Unfortunately, there is no word if there will be anything worthwhile to watch while the game installs. I would enjoy a picture of a Big Daddy taking down a cigarette, but I suppose Metal Gear Solid 4 filled that gap quite nicely.

Honestly, I don't know why this is even news anymore. It's a given with the PS3.

What will be news is when people stop bitching about it. If you can't wait 10 minutes to play your game, then something's wrong.

Wait, the PC version only took ~6 GB to install? I don't get it. Unless they upped the definition on the textures, sounds, character models, et al, why would there need to be this much installed on the PS3 version?

Installs haven't bothered me much to this point, but these huge installs for MGS and now Bioshock are a little worrying. Yeah, I know I can get a hard drive but I'd really rather not have to fuck with that.

The "having to wait 10 minutes" angle is ridiculous, though. We anticipate these games for months and then we're gonna bitch about a 10 minute install?

I still prefer choice when it comes to installs, but they don't faze me much anymore. Just a fact of life for us PS3 folks.

Call me a fanboy, but I actually sort of like installs, they do take some time, but the games end up loading faster as a result. Manual ones can be a bit of a slag though. Best is when it's optional like SC4.

Personally, I don't care. If it lessens load times, and most people have upgraded HDDs, then who cares?

i'm another (call me a fanboy) person who doesn't mind the installs, I pay good money for a game, having to wait 10 minutes to play it isn't a huge deal to me.

Install is not bad but 5 fing gigabytes thats total BS. 200MB is not bad but 5 gigs this better come with a whole more than one dumb extra level unless the games 40 bucks.

With the plethora of RB dlc, looks like i'm going to need to buy a hard drive and follow sony's steps in upgrading the 80gb hd they gave me. Good thing I stream my music and tv shows, else I'd have this bad boy full already

Why does this have to be about 360 vs PS3? I just would be pissed off with the fact that I have to budget my console's HDD every time I wanted to play a game.

People buy consoles partly so they don't need to install stuff.

@Capn Birdseye

I'd agree with that sentiment, switching between PC and 360 as I do, but I can't wait for 360 installs because the cheap ass drive is so horribly noisy it distracts from games.

Of course the problem there is because MS are utter twats I'll probably have to sell a kidney to buy a bigger drive. Goddamn, I wish Sony had been more concerned with the PS3 as a games machine at launch and not winning a format war.

Meh, oh well. Seems like this is the way of things, not much we can really do about it. And its not that big of a deal in the larger scope of gaming imo.

Maybe next time around Sony and MS will design their consoles properly!!
Still lame PS3 users have to wait so long for this game and pay full price!!I can get this for 10 quid!!

I know what they should do for the install splash screen.

Make a ton of those pipe dream hack puzzles. If you win, it installs faster but if you lose, it pauses the installiation for 1 minute.

They must not want 20GB owners to buy the game. After you consider the system software, there's much less than 20GB of free space available.

"Just upgrade" is a fucking stupid argument. The only time I've seen a console that had to be upgraded was the N64, and at lest the memory expansion was bundled with a game.

If there must be an installation, make it scalable or use a caching system. Streaming data, such as audio, is still useful, in case any developers have forgotten.

@ meatloaf

holy dead christ on a stick, just buy a bigger HDD, and move on...they're not that expensive.

the PS3 was meant to be user-expandable..it's absolutely fucking retarded to NOT want to take advantage of a feature that adds value and capability to your playstation.
brainderailment's Avatar
brainderailment at 09/11/2008 12:45
@Sharpless, actually they did, you just didn't realize it because there was no loading screen. They used unskippable intros. Put Doom3 into an Xbox that has a new HDD in and you'll notice.

Well, I never noticed and it was never inconvenient. More than I can say for the PS3's installs, it would seem.
