Our very own Gameboi shared his personal woes with trying to get the PS3 version of Rainbow Six Vegas II to work online, and informed us that Ubisoft was well aware of the issue. In follow up news, the publisher has confirmed that a patch will be coming soon to address the issue.
Responding to one hapless gamer, Ubisoft's statement was this:
This issue is currently being worked on by the development team. Unfortunately, we do not have an ETA on when it will be resolved, but it should not be long.
And a patch makes everything it better, doesn't it? Frankly, this is yet another example of a malignant "patch culture" that I predicted would crop up on consoles sooner rather than later. I think it's quite despicable that no sooner do consoles integrate more with the Internet, than companies start relying on patches to make up for shoddy workmanship.
Just remember that not everyone has a console hooked up to high speed (which wouldn't be an issue in this case, but would certainly be for others) and a sloppy reliance on post-release patching is both inexcusable and disrespectful to consumers. Sadly I don't see scenarios like this one disappearing any time soon. As long as there's facilitation to rush a product out the door, you bet your arse a fair few publishers are going to take the easy route. To Hell with testing, let's grab the cash and worry about the playability later, right?
Not cool, in my opinion. Not cool at all.
Boo, c'mon Jim I want a caption on that pic!
it's awesome to see consoles look more like pc's everyday.
=(
Butmac: Considering the physical state I'm in, it's a wonder I'm writing anything, let alone coming up with captions.
I hate this whole "patch it after release" mentality that companies are getting. People without internet hooked up to their consoles get screwed over.
You were the one who predicted that developers would release patches for their games on consoles? What foresight you have, Jim!
I agree with your sentiment, Jim, but it's like talking to a brick wall these days.
Jim: Fair enough. I will help you. Have a dash pointing at the "Protection" and "Mobility" section and say something relating to Paris Hilton, an STD, protection, and the upcoming patch - but used in a medical way. like
"Hopefully this patch will kill this damn burning sensation. Paris Hilton ftl."
I don't mean to gloat but that's pretty good Jim.
Nintendo don't patch games and I don't remember seeing a patch for a Sega game. The old class know what it means to release a finished game.
We have just isolated the reason why Butmac does not write captions for me.

patches!
^
wow! how could something so simple be done so poorly?
I fail.
Beggars and the sickly can't be choosers JimJam! Oh, how about this:
"Bullsh*t!"
"That's what your mom said!"
J/k
Love you Jim
did i miss any british phrases? i think i got them all.
Y'know after proving the game they're 'done' with isn't.. we should 'gift' all lazy dev's with things to help them not be lazy.. Oh, say, a cactus programming chair, a paycut, or threatening them with having to parade around in horrible clothing and hair to wear infront of and be judged by Kotaku's BCrecente ("Hair Crecente") and BAshcraft.. Now that would be proper punshiment if u ask me.. mu hu haha!
@tazar
"Bangers and mash" is also a euphemism for sex, I think.
It's not until Tazar that I've ever heard of "scurry scurry" being introduced into the big book of British phrases.
<3 Tazar
I heard a guy say it once on the BBC, I just assumed it was legit.
Wait, maybe it was MTV. Close enough.
Well, "scurry" is a proper word, but don't you guys use that in America?
"Well, "scurry" is a proper word, but don't you guys use that in America?"
no
Strange. It means to run away, usually quite meekly or cowardly.
This is a better conversation than Vegas II, btw.
Isn't that what mice do?
Yeah, we don't use that word in this country. We rather "fuckabout," as in:
"The mouse done just fuckabout the house."
impatient gamers + money hungry publisher = patch culture.
we're just as guilty as the publishers. if this game were to be delayed, i'm sure the post would also be negative. its a lose lose.
whaa?A?????? I donm't get whyle you didnt use mycaption JIM!!! scurryscurryscurryscurryscurry rascaly rabbits and scccurrry!
Well, I tried to stay on topic LOL =D
-My 3 favorite British words/phrases:
Bah! Bloody 'ell! For F*ks Sake!
O dang Druckmac is on the scene.
What about bit knackered? What does that mean? I think it means to bite a girls nipples, t or f?
To be "knackered" means to be tired. This comes, I believe, from when horses were old and tired and sent to be turned into glue (the place where horses were rent apart was called the "knacker's yard")
It's good that games can be fixed now instead of just being broken and requiring huge recalls (see: SNK v. Capcom: Card Fighters on the DS); however, developers seem to be taking advantage of this and skipping costly QA.
"Sorry to dissapoint but there has not been any official statement as described above.
Be assured when there is we will post it here on these forums in addition to or instead of external sources certainly not instead off Wink
I'll lock this one to save any ongoing confusion but any new updates will be posted either in the existing thread a new sticky to replace it"

If Jim talked to a Ubisoft rep I'm gonna believe Jim over a forum mod. I mean that's all I'm sayin
there's a patch.. now that's better!
You must not have read the post on this very page Butmac.
patches are like band-aids for my video games!?
Another great thing about patch culture is that if your game sells poorly, you can just abandon it and never bother patching issues that would have eaten up a lot of dev time fixing or have the office junior code a fix up when he isn't too busy between 3-4pm on every 3rd Thursday of the month. Much better than spending more dev time (money) pre-release and further reducing potential profits.
High speed internet is a great replacement for competent staff - I see reps telling people on forums that commonly experienced problems are due to the nature of PC gaming. The fact that some companies can release stuff with very efficient coding & good compatability levels and be pretty prompt about patching other issues proves it.
Tazar is awesome...but he forgot “Can’t be arsed,” which is something that no one in America says. Also, console patch culture FTL.
When's the PC version out?
Maybe M$ and Sony should make it impossible to submit patches in the first 2 months after a game has been released? then they'll be forced to do a better job... and then they can just release 1 patch to solve all the crap that they 'forgot' about...
This patching business it absurd. I say, if a developer has to patch a game they rushed, we each get like, 500 MS points or some kind of inconvenience compensation.
Damn, I fucking hate this patching practice. It's fine for adding tweaks to a game when certain exploits have been found, but beyond that, it's just sloppy.
It doesn't really bother my friends an I very much as we kind of play behind the curve anyway. This just gives us yet another reason to wait 3-6 months before making a purchase, cheaper prices and major issues (in most cases, glares Vegas on PC) resolved. At least most single player experience don't suffer from this shit.
UBiSOFT will always be known as UBiGAY. Their servers have always and forever will be behind every online service. Everyone out does them, including EA. They should either learn how to manage their own networks or just stop trying. This game is worse than their Splinter cell double agent game.
I loved playing Double Agent on my 8800 series video card, Spider Scrawl Fisher and crazy flashing multicolour backgrounds are epic.
