3D entertainment was all the rage in the nineties, and it gave rise to some shamelessly obvious 3D movies like Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, where things needlessly flew at the screen in an embarrassingly contrived manner. If you want to relive those memories of blatant gimmickry, know that Sony is working on making it happen by 2009.
According to Neil Schneider, CEO of "3D advocacy group" Meant to be Seen, Sony "fully intends" on integrating stereoscopic 3D visuals into its games and Blu-ray movies over the course of the next year. Apparently it's simple.
"The best part is console support will only need a bios upgrade to work," Schneider suggests. "We are told that the ability to add this capability via bios may be unique to Sony PS3 versus the other console solutions."
Sony should add 3D to Home. I'd like to see what utter, desolate, crushing nothingness looks like in the third dimension.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
oh sony... when will the retarded ideas stop?
Why not go 3d. It will most likely be optional and everyone else doesn't have a lazy eye.
The quality of today's 3D cannot be compared to the old stuff.
New tech will probably be announced at CES.
I kid, I kid, I just couldn't miss the opportunity
Awesome.
I like free ice cream; I wouldn't accept it off anyone though because its probably laced with some kind of toxic substance. I mean, thats why it'd be free right? Point being, just becasue something doesn't cost money, doesn't excuse it from being a stupid idea in the first place.
I seriously hope this isnt a direction gaming is going to be pushed in. I was cringing in the cinema the other day when I saw a trailer for a new 3D horror flick; it was one of those ones where the hooded evil guy throws a pickaxe out of the screen, then cuts to the whole audience gasping in shock. For 2009, this is terrible!
I don't see what the obsession with media and 3D is recently. People have been shocked and stunned perfectly well by movies and video games for years on a flat 2D screen. Why add these pointless gimmicks to the mix now?
This man speaks truths.
I must imagine playing ratchet and clank or MGS4 in 3D would be a cool experience!
imagine a billion years ago when the first animal climbed outta the sea, it had to try or else we wouldn't be here. and i bet the first time it did it failed and died.
Sony’s revolutionary dance party simulator (Home) has been experiencing some connectivity problems since its open beta launch last week.
Sony: PlayStation 3 Trophy issue to be addressed in this century, presumably
word to that!
its free, the worse that can come from it is that you don't use it.
stop bitching you freaking whiners! here's your bottle.
I think a more important question would be "Why not?"
@ elsteveo
I'm not one to go broadcasting my personal life, but I will say this. I don't get the whole "PS3 has no games" thing. As of the moment I have more than I can actually play, and there are still titles I want to buy that I can't afford. I work as a writer and I make decent money. Maybe I don't have enough money to reach the point where I could complain about the library, I don't know.
Need I remind you folks that my dearly-missed Magic Carpet from the murdered-by-EA Bullfrog had not only red/blue anaglyph but also a fully functional "Magic Eye" stereoscopic mode? And that was back in the days when a Pentium 90 MHz CPU was da BOMB!
If Bullfrog did it ten years ago with VGA/SVGA, there is no reason why a workhorse like the PS3 or 360 can't do it now with even better effect in HD.
But as it goes, 3D may as well be tried and tested before we judge it. Just so long as it is completely optional, and we're not given mandatory games with annoying pop out effects.
