PS3 Tidbits: No backwards compatibility confirmed, $50 off at Amazon photo

Why did I say "tidbits" in the headline? I hate that word. It reminds me of canned fruit, and not news items.

There's not going to be backwards compatibility in the newer PS3s. Never. Rumors pop up, then die, and then come back. A site called Koalition put it all to rest with word from Sony:

When we removed backwards compatibility from PS3, we said that it would not be coming back as our priority was to make great next generation games.  I am not sure where you are getting your information from, but at no point did we say that there would be some sort of emulation being brought to PS3.  At no point has this strategy changed and therefore I can tell you that there are no plans to bring back backwards compatibility to PS3.

Face. I like how it sounds angry. And who doesn't have a PS2? You know, I have a 60GB PS3, but directly under it are my PS1 and PS2. They actually do the job better than the PS3 does anyway, especially at games that require precise timing.

And, if you're looking for a PS3 anyway, despite not having backwards compatibility, you'll be pleased to know that Amazon is running a sale, taking $50 of the 80GB model. That's $349. Not bad!

Wow, Sony just seems ornery lately.

Well at least this means that the emulation community with sate my thirst eventually.

Us: "Backwards compatibility?"

Sony: "FUCK U"

Pirates: "We got your back!"

I agree with the mindset of who doesn't own a PS2. I got rid of my PS1, but there's no reason to get rid of my still running slim PS2 for my PS2/1 games. My PS3 is for my PS3 games and Blu-Ray movies.

No BC in future models is a shame, but there are still older SKU's with BC online being sold.

Considering that they're still selling PS2s by the truckload and making a profit for each console sold, it makes sense since they can offset the loss for each PS3 this way.

As much as it sucks for us, there's no need for Sony to be putting all their eggs in one basket right now.

God damn...I will never understand this..I've got a first gen 60gb model with the built in ps2 compadiblity, but if that ever breaks I'm fucked...and there are so many awesome ps2 games! Just don't understand..

I'll give you all a very good reason NOT to have a PS2. Because I had to trade it in order to have the $500 to BUY an 80 gig PS3. That, and about 20 games, a Gamecube (I had gotten a Wii a couple months prior) my Xbox, and my PSP. And the only reason I sold my PS2 was because of the BC. THE ONLY REASON!
Bullshit.

Ok, my comment didn't make much sense since I screwed the first sentence. Here is the remake:

No sorry, I actually do want back compat in a PS3. You sell more PS2 games than PS3 games in Japan still, please stop being fucking retarded.

i believe that sony are kinda of saving their wallet from the sink of the Ps3 with the PS2 sales, PS2 still sells like hot cupcakes, many games, cheap. WHy wouldnt you buy a PS2 ? PS3 sucks for most part anyway. I dont see the point in adding the Ps2 compatibility in the Ps3. They will lose money lol.

Im going to have to agree with PappaDukes. Some of us are cheap ass gamers and had to trade in our last gen consoles for the current gen consoles. the price point on the PS3 is starting to become more questionable with system launch features now being taken away.

I can also see why Sony might take this angle as it does play up digital distribution. Twats.

I can't imagine they want to throw away so much future revenue from downloadable PS2 sales. The Xbox Originals and Nintendo Virtual Console is essentially free money. Can you imagine how many great games you could repurchase in 3 years when your PS2 doesn't work anymore? Nintendo and Microsoft can get people to rebuy their old games, but Sony doesn't want to?

Your incredible back catalog from the previous generation is an incredible asset! Why abandon it for short term gains of PS2 sales?

PS2's are very cheap and used ones are even cheaper. Most gamers out there still have their PS2's somewhere. If you really wanted to play [insert PS2 title here], you would plug in your old PS2 and play it. Stop complaining about this 'issue' and move on/plug in your old PS2. At least the PS3 can still play PS1 games via PSN/Disk.

PS2 backwards compatibility will be back the moment Sony decides to sell PS2 games through PSN. Will that moment come this year. Most likely not.

I have a PS2, but if I ever got a PS3 I'd want a 60GB model. Most PS2 games don't natively support progressive scan, and I wanna play mah games on my good TV :(

I don't see backwards compatibility as a very big issue. I've owned a 60GB PS3, which will play almost any PS2 game on the planet and every PS2 game I own, since Feb '07 and I've used that functionality all of two or three times. There are plenty of PS3 games, not to mention the fact that buying a PS3 only to play a bunch of PS2 games is a waste of money. Upscaling games isn't worth $300. If you're going to get a PS3, don't burn your PS2 on the trade-in funeral pyre and enjoy some PS3 games. There are lots of great exclusives (like Valkyria Chronicles!) and PSN games.

If you can find room on your shelf for a Genesis, an Atari 2600 and a Dreamcast, you can squeeze a PS2 in there somewhere.

Everybody really needs to get over it. I still play my SNES, PS2 and what other console you want. Those are different devices right? The PS2 and the PS3 are as well and should be treated like that. Or you should've bought it day one like I did. Complaining about the money doesn't help. I only ate peanut-butter sandwiches for a whole month because of that. If you can't afford it it's a shame but stop whining. What is this world coming to? Crying over something you can't afford? Or do you think you got more rights as a gamer? Am I gonna cry because the Ferrari is way to overpriced? You'll get the idea.

A problem is if a 60 gig does break, they aren't making them any more and will replace it a similar model, which in time will not be a BC system. I just hope sokewhere down the line they do change their minds as this idea sucks.

See, they just lost a potential "future" PS3 owner/customer. I'm getting a 60 gig, one way or another. That, IMO, was the best version with a shitload of capabilities. It's a shame, really, cuz I was seriously trying to like Sony these last couple of years, but their decision making is as skewed as a giraffe with a twisted leg. Albeit, their products ain't half bad...

Oops to posting too soon. Anyway!

My reasons for saying its better:
1) wireless
2) small improvements to graphics and load times
3) all games are upscaled! (no more 480i!!!)
4) unlimited save space

That's plenty enough reason right there, and I'd be so mad to give all that up that if my PS3 ever broke and they could not replace it with a BC model I'd get rid of my PS3 and all my games.

I still find it funny that the PS2 and PS3 are technically competing against each other.

Why don't they just do what MS did. I doubt it is that hard to release updates and make some of the more popular hits playable on the PS3. I know it isn't the future of gaming but some people like to relive the past. I mean look at how many old school games get remade to come on Live and PSN. One small thing to make a good chunk of gamers happy.

I'm a bit disappointed, but I'll eventually get a PS3. I still find it a bit strange that Linux Compatibility is a bigger priority than Software PS2 Emulation in the eyes of Sony. They're still selling PS2s, so I guess it's purely financial. The only other console that I can think of that dropped features on later models is the Gamecube which dropped their Digital TV output, and we know how well that sold last generation.

Had a 60gb, it stopped reading discs a year and a half after purchase, bought another and it did the same stuff the day I got it. Which sucks because I kept them clean and ventiliated and never played past a couple of hours. now I just have a ps2 and the current 80gb ps3.Sorry, just wanted to vent a little.....

Picture caption is so full of shit I can't believe it. The only thing the PS3 isn't superior at is playing EyeToy games because the EyeToy doesn't work with PS2 software. In every other way it's the perfect Playstation regardless of what system's software you're playing. Better, fewer, wireless controllers. Single system operation. Upscaling. Unlimited memory cards.

It makes perfect sense from a business perspective for Sony to drop BC as it costs them money and can't do anything but hurt sales of PS3 games to make it any easier than it already is to play PS2 games. But you've got to be fucking mental to pretend that hooking up a second system with wired controllers (and inferior analog sticks, don't forget) to play games that could just as easily be played on the first sytem.

@dark-mullet: _ALL_ PS3 consoles play PSX games, why would you bother using a PS2 to play them?

I can't understand the obsession with BC in the PS3. Yes it would be nice to have, but I can't believe the amount of people saying they wont get a PS3 until it can play PS2 games.

There are three possibilities,:

1 - Either you already have a PS2, and just don't want to have both machines set up.
2 - You don't have a PS2, but you would like to play all the last generation titles. If this is so important, couldn't you just buy a PS2?
3 - You're looking for excuses.

Shell out 100'ish dollars in addition to the 400 dollars I shelled out for the PS3 (well, actually its far more expensive in my country)?
