Why did I say "tidbits" in the headline? I hate that word. It reminds me of canned fruit, and not news items.
There's not going to be backwards compatibility in the newer PS3s. Never. Rumors pop up, then die, and then come back. A site called Koalition put it all to rest with word from Sony:
When we removed backwards compatibility from PS3, we said that it would not be coming back as our priority was to make great next generation games. I am not sure where you are getting your information from, but at no point did we say that there would be some sort of emulation being brought to PS3. At no point has this strategy changed and therefore I can tell you that there are no plans to bring back backwards compatibility to PS3.
Face. I like how it sounds angry. And who doesn't have a PS2? You know, I have a 60GB PS3, but directly under it are my PS1 and PS2. They actually do the job better than the PS3 does anyway, especially at games that require precise timing.
And, if you're looking for a PS3 anyway, despite not having backwards compatibility, you'll be pleased to know that Amazon is running a sale, taking $50 of the 80GB model. That's $349. Not bad!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Us: "Backwards compatibility?"
Sony: "FUCK U"
Pirates: "We got your back!"
As much as it sucks for us, there's no need for Sony to be putting all their eggs in one basket right now.
Bullshit.
"I'll give you all a very good reason why I DON'T own a PS2. Because I had to trade it in order to have the $500 to BUY an 80 gig PS3. That, and about 20 games, a Gamecube (I had gotten a Wii a couple months prior) my Xbox, and my PSP. And the only reason I sold my PS2 was because of the BC. THE ONLY REASON!
Bullshit."
P.S. Double Bullshit
I can also see why Sony might take this angle as it does play up digital distribution. Twats.
Your incredible back catalog from the previous generation is an incredible asset! Why abandon it for short term gains of PS2 sales?
"I've got a first gen 60gb model with the built in ps2 compadiblity, but if that ever breaks I'm fucked..."
No you're not. Sony repairs or replaces every model including the 60gb model. Not that it happens often but still.
If you can find room on your shelf for a Genesis, an Atari 2600 and a Dreamcast, you can squeeze a PS2 in there somewhere.
I got the BC 80GB PS3 with my MGS4 Bundle because I made up my mind to save for it. I had to drink OE and Mickey's forties for like two weeks.
My reasons for saying its better:
1) wireless
2) small improvements to graphics and load times
3) all games are upscaled! (no more 480i!!!)
4) unlimited save space
That's plenty enough reason right there, and I'd be so mad to give all that up that if my PS3 ever broke and they could not replace it with a BC model I'd get rid of my PS3 and all my games.
Introducing the DualShock 3!!
I still find it funny that the PS2 and PS3 are technically competing against each other.
It makes perfect sense from a business perspective for Sony to drop BC as it costs them money and can't do anything but hurt sales of PS3 games to make it any easier than it already is to play PS2 games. But you've got to be fucking mental to pretend that hooking up a second system with wired controllers (and inferior analog sticks, don't forget) to play games that could just as easily be played on the first sytem.
@dark-mullet: _ALL_ PS3 consoles play PSX games, why would you bother using a PS2 to play them?
There are three possibilities,:
1 - Either you already have a PS2, and just don't want to have both machines set up.
2 - You don't have a PS2, but you would like to play all the last generation titles. If this is so important, couldn't you just buy a PS2?
3 - You're looking for excuses.
Shell out 100'ish dollars in addition to the 400 dollars I shelled out for the PS3 (well, actually its far more expensive in my country)?
go ebay a 60gig and stop ya bitchin
