PS3 system software update v2.53 coming tomorrow ... probably photo

We’ve got some curious information on a PS3 system update that may or may not be available tomorrow. This morning, CVG reported that PlayStation.com had information on a new update, version 2.53 (the current version is 2.52). I checked out the system software update page on the official US PlayStation Web site at the time, and it indeed said that the v2.53 firmware would add the ability to maximize Flash videos: “New for 2.53: The Internet browser now supports full-screen mode for Adobe Flash Player content.”

Strangely, if you visit the page now, that bullet point is nowhere to be found. Maybe that’s because it will remain November 25th in the US for another nine hours -- you see, the site still features this telling line:

An update to the PS3™ system software was released on November 26, 2008. You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 2.53.

I guess we’ll find out what the deal is at midnight EST tonight. In the immortal words of Jebediah Springfield, “A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man,” and I’m hoping to be able to “embiggen” some Flash videos on my PS3 tomorrow.

[Via CVG -- thanks, Joe!]

@grafkhun: It allows you to fullscreen Flash videos. Did you not read the post?

I'm still waiting for the firmware update that provides enough RAM to play most flash videos without intermittent stuttering. Thanks for the update Samit!

I'm waiting for the firmware update that supports a basic feature like universal overscan compensation.

It Overscan Compensation so hard to do Sony?

Also, shy not let us run mplayer in the Media Bar? The format support on the PS3 is laughable.

It can't even play softsubs, VFR or support multiple audio tracks.

It better do more than just fullscreen. You can zoom the browser to fit the screen just fine right now.

I've been using zoom too. Works fine.

Hopefully this won't take long to download.

The zooming does work, but it leaves small portions of the surrounding page visible in some cases. Plus it gets screwed up if you accidentally tap the analog stick and "uncenter" it during playback. Not a big deal, but I'll be happy to not have to worry about it.

That's it? Zooming works fine for me.

Useful, I guess, but I'm hoping they toss in more than just that.

@lubczyk: The PS3 actually CAN support soft subs and multiple audio tracks, you just have to put your videos in a .divx format container. No re-encoding is necessary so no lost quality), but you do need to extract your video and audio tracks from, say, a .mkv file and then recombine them. what an unnecessary update. I guess pixelated porn is better then stuttering porn.

Does it do anything else? Not worth the install time, then.
