Japanese gaming magazine/hype pamphlet Famitsu has listed the biggest news stories of 2009 according to its readers and retailers. Unsurprisingly, the list includes a ludicrous amount of Sony and Square Enix stories, with such gems as the PSPgo, Final Fantasy XIV and, of course, The Last Guardian.
The PS3 Slim, however, tops the poll. Apparently everybody in Japan thought that was more mindblowing than Project Natal, even though we all knew the PS3 Slim was coming so it wasn't much of a shock. Still, Sony is Japanese and Microsoft is not, so what could we expect? Here's the list of Famitsu's biggest bombshells:
- PS3 Slim announcement
- Final Fantasy XIII release date
- Dragon Quest IX sells two million copies in two days
- DSi LL goes on sale
- PSPgo announced
- Nintendo's R4 lawsuit
- PSP-3000 price drop (seriously?)
- Project Natal announcement
- Final Fantasy XIV announcement
- The Last Guardian announcement
I'd call the actual importance and shock value of some of those stories into question, but what about you lot? Does this list sum up 2009 for you, are can you think of better things that happed during the year?

People have been waiting for the PS3 to drop in price forever. The Wii was always affordable and has the highest sales so that price drop had no effect. And the 360 just so happened to have a price drop the week after the PS3.
However.
*cynical rant about how motion control is lame and not big news*
Price breaks and date announcements mean more line waiting to this lot. That list would twist the nipples of all of Japan.
True it wasn't the most exciting or unexpected news but it was certainly the largest, at least in my view. Anything that gets more people interested in our hobby is a big deal, and consoles becoming more affordable does just that.
Seriously enough though: For me, I think it was about that. The Slim announcement really gave the PS3 a second wind that wasn't expected. It is picking up steam, finally, and it was the biggest announcement of the year for me. But the PSP Go in there? they talk about failures too?
Looks like im a fag for owning a PS3....and a sissy girl for owning a Wii, but at least im not a retard for owning a 360.
FIXED!
And like JACK of No Trades, I am also proud to be a fa...I mean PS3 owner, and a Wii owner.
I think that a lot of these announcements are "meh" caliber at best. Price drops neded to happen across the entire spectrum. Final Fantasy announcements fail to get me excited anymore. A blowout for a DQ game isn't news, it's expected. The R4 lawsuit is classic Nintendo at its finest.
What I am surprised by is the mere mention of a Western console/periphal - Natal may not be the greatest thing ever, and it may end up being gimmicky as shit, but the fact that a Western product (that owes its existence to a Japanese idea) made a splash in Japan is kinda cool. It used to be the other way around, where the Western world would invent/create something and the East would refine it to perfection, maybe the opposite inverse will happen here, who knows?
Being a poll of famitsu readers and Japanese retailers, I'm shocked Natal even made the list.
"PS3 fags"
Looks like im a fag for owning a PS3....and a sissy girl for owning a Wii, but at least im not a retard for owning a 360.
I agree ... only a 360 fanboy act like a retard ... DeadHead would be a perfect example of 360 'tard
I guess I'm a retard, and a sissy girl! Hopefully soon I will come out of some imaginary console closet and become a fag and own a PS3!
Oops! I should read the comments first. I basically stole your comment without even knowing it. I bow to you "Oh Superior One."
And for the record I never ragged on the ps3, I was tired for ps3 fanboys bitching. The ps3 fanboys started talking about consoles.
i totally agree with ... except replace the word PS3 by the word 360
