PS3 Slim deconstructed, innards explored photo

Here's how slow of a news day this is: I got up at 6:30 a.m., finished some work from last night, and then started playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 for the Wii. There's nothing going on! In the office, we're not talking about videogames. Instead, we've been chatting about how Firefox has gone downhill, and how cute wild felines are. That's not to say that I wouldn't have ran this blurb on a deconstructed PS3 Slim anyway, but I just want to let you know where we're coming from today.

Website ifixit has done an extensive teardown and display of all of the PS3 Slim's innards. Four full pages of high-quality images give you full instructions on how to take one apart, as well as show you all of the interesting bits inside.

Things of note (may only appeal to tech geek types):

  • massive internal fan
  • very small power supply
  • New Cell processor and RSX chip
  • overall elegant internal design
If you don't like flipping through webpages, you'll find a video that ifixit put together after the jump. It doesn't look like $300 worth of parts when taken apart, does it?

I can understand a news day being slow. My morning wasn't much different. And I completely agree that Firefox is going downhill. So much so that I will start refusing to update to the newest version comes out.

Nice to see they still made the HDD easily accessible and replaceable. Beats the hell out of a proprietary HDD.

Dale! Your constant twitter bouts with Firefox amuse me on a weekly basis.

I agree, it is going very downhill. Casual users have no way of looking up advanced fixes like this one every time it crashes.

Though very reluctantly, I'm starting to use Chrome more and more: once Dtoid adds 100% Chrome support I might switch.

Firefox has never crashed on me, and I have never had one problem with it.

One thing I have to say is that the design is a lot better, internally, compared to the xbox 360. Everything seems to be in the right spot and cooling is going to be no issue with the PS3 slim.

What Sony don't tell is that this is how it will actually come in the box.

"We have finally been able to cut the cost of production and thereby the price of the PS3 by allowing customers to construct the console themselves."

Sorry for the double post, but does anyone know if the PS3 slim runs as hot (AND LOUD) as the PS3 fatty? I mean honestly, the non-slim PS3 almost needs an external fan to keep it from overheating if you don't have it 100% air circulation at all times.

It's cool to see the PS3 slim deconstructed, but that video makes me dizzy.

Firefox HAS gone downhill. After using Mozilla for 5 or 6 years, I'm running Chrome as my default now.

@Pappa: Topher said it's quieter than the wii on RFGo.

Eh, I'm happy with Firefox as my default browser. Of course, because I have Linux, it's pretty much a choice between Firefox or Opera, which runs on basically anything with a processor.

I too have a serious beef with the 'Fox. Leaving it on private surfing means any site you want it to remember a password means turning it off, typing it in, then reacivating privacy.

And about every 3rd or 4th video--be it news or YouTube will bring it to a screeching, cliff-diving halt of a crash.

Firefox's motto: if it ain't broke, take a ball peen hammer to it.

It almost looks like there's a Wii inside in the PS3 when they first opened it up.

I have no problems with Firefox. Ever. I don't know what y'all are talking about.
You're probably all running XP still. Ha, yes, I am running Vista, and I'm proud of it. Again, don't know what everyone's problem with it is. Runs well, aside from being a memory-eater, and haven't had a major .NET framework crash/meltdown in about 2 years, but that was from a massive trojan.

Also, I still can't get over how nervous I would be to have a PS3 slim. I still have nightmares about the PS2 slim in all it's destructible beauty. If, or when, it gets a price drop... maybe. I don't own a PS3, so sure.

"it doesn't look like $300 worth of parts when taken apart, does it?" I actually hope it isn't $300 worth of hardware so that sony can make some $ on the unit and be able to spend more on games and R&D for those of us that are already ps3 owners

I ALWAYS hated Firefox. I was an Opera man for a while and now I'm a Google Chrome lover. Seriously I could make love to this browser.

...that Is all.

overheat? are you kidding or just trolling? I have an original release date 60gig I have left on for 3 days by accident before the update that turns it off automatically. knock on wood, it has never overheated. as for loud. it can get loud but nowhere near the jet engine my 360 had.

I always love to see these photo shoots. Now let's work on figuring out how to mod it to play ps2 games. Yeah firefox has gotten bland but the biggest reason I use chrome is google search from adress bar. If firefox picked up something similar I would use it more.
