PS3 Slim and a PS3 price drop happening this fall? photo

If you thought a holiday PlayStation 3 price drop and the PS3 Slim were nothing more than fiction, Ars Technica’s “The Mole” may make you reconsider: the industry insider (who dropped the initial details on the new Xbox 360 Elite bundles) says Sony will launch the PS3 Slim this fall and slash the price on their hardware. In addition to this, Sony will phase out the 60 GB hard drive model in favor of the monstrous 160 GB model. Nice.

That’s not all: according to “The Mole,” Microsoft will counter Sony’s efforts by cutting prices in September and making the Elite the new Pro-level system.

If the Sony rumors prove true, this is great news. People may actually be able to buy a PS3 without having to seek loan approval or screw with a branded VISA card. That means more games and more support from publishers. Awesome.

@Black Nexus About 7 more times.

I wouldn't mind a price cut. But hopefully I have a PS3 well before the price cut occurs. If not, then it's welcomed.

For God's sake, Sony, do SOMETHING!

Let's hope it is true. A price drop would really help the sales of this console, and it desperately needs it...

It's still butt****ery if they don't reinstate PS2 support.

Anybody gotta a suped-up/pimped-out wishing well? But, seriously.. ditto Cadtalfryn. Kinda hope this is the last one of the rumors because it's a bit heartbreaking every time nothing is definite... Still, thanks Brad for keeping our hopes up cause I still agree this would be "aww-sum!"

I would get this Ps3...after I get an HDTV, bring back my surround sound, gain the income for the extra controllers, be able to afford Blu-Ray movies, and do all that, you know, financially secure stuff.

So I need about $1200 of spending money.

This needs to be done. I might actually consider one then.

Am I the only person that thinks that thing looks way too small to house the PS3's guts?

I got one in April, but I'd like to see this so I can think about getting another. Blu-Ray players in bedroom and front room would rock...as would games of course :p.

I really hope (against hope) that Sony reintroduces the PS2 hardware BC. I'd pay 400 for a new one (smaller nm build than the old for less heat/power consumption). DO IT Sony...do it. Please?

@ExpertPenguin,

If they were to try to stuff the power block inside it still yes. Remove that thing and no. It becomes about the size of the Wii (bit bigger).

I might consider getting this if they put BC back in.But we know that will never happen.

... people screamed for a price cut from the launch price, so they dropped BC, some USB ports and cut the price. I have to wonder what they'd have to cut in order to produce a PS3 "slim" and a potentially slimmer price??

Rumour has it (and take this with a grain of salt , hell a bucket of salt) that wifi will be terminate and a external power brick will be used ( like the 360 power brick ) so they have enough room for heatsinks ( because apparently they were paying attention to the RROD thing and said yeah we dont need that to happen do we), if the slim does exist ( No confirmation a the moment ) it will be a barebones PS3, just everything you need to get it to work and nothing more.

again I must state because its the internet that this is a R U M O U R and theres no confirmation of a ps3 slim even existing.

@Black Nexus: Barebones? As in...Arcade 360? I'm sure the PS3 of any kind would have a hard drive, but if they cut that out too...

I think I'm gonna pay attention to this, see how things play out.

no a HDD is a ps3 requirement with the mandatory installs and everything , but its size is a different story.

It says 120gb HDD on that box up there in the pic...

Laptop HDD's are very tiny. Pop one out some time. Only slightly bigger than the iPod HDD's. About the same size of an ipod classic or zune (lil' bigger).

I believe if you take the power out, the PS3 can fit just fine in what that shows there. Nothing else needs to be removed from the current 60/120gb models but that. Put a controller up to a PS3 and you'll see that it's not longer than 2 side by side (maybe by like an inch at most). So it's not too unbelivable to think it would be 1.5 controllers long.

I hope it happens. I'd like to own a PS3. I wanna play LittleBigPlanet for some very strange reason. Plus, built in wifi would be nice, instead of Microsoft's gimpy, overpriced adapters clonking out after a year of use.

I thought the 60 GB PS3 had long been phased out. Do you mean the 80 GB will be phased out?

If this is true, HELL YEAH.

It'll make saving up a lot easier. A price cut pushs me to 100% purchase for Christmas, so if this rumor is true, HAPPY GINGER I AM.

If you can't commit to saving up $100 dollars in 3 monthes, you probably don't want a ps3 anyways.

Seriously, how are they going to slim this thing down without removing a ton of components? All the disassembled pictures paint the PS3 as this big, compressed machine, carefully filled to the brim with parts on the level of the high-end MacBook Pro. It's not like the PS2 with lots of empty space it can slim down on.

I'm not against it, I just think that it will run amazingly hot, and if that's the actual slim design, it looks pretty bad.

It's amazing to consider that the difference in price of one and a half new games really plays a key role in your choice between buying a system or not. If you really wanted one, couldn't you skip McDonalds for a month? :)

No offense, but it sounds like poor rationalization of something many of you "think" you ought to have, but really have no interest in owning. That's totally fine though; just own up to it.
