PS3 sales up 178% in the UK thanks to price drop

PS3 sales up 178% in the UK thanks to price drop photo
     United Kingdom

You can always count on a price drop to boost sales (unless that price drop is for The IT Crowd), something Sony can attest to. Since it dropped PlayStation 3 prices in Europe, UK sales have gone up by 178%. Another score for Blu-ray!

In the UK, PlayStation products are true status symbols, so it's no great stretch to imagine a price cut attracting yet more buyers who found the launch product a bit too rich for their blood. I was a little shocked at first, especially since I wouldn't recommend a PS3 purchase before we know more about the Dualshock 3, but then I forget that many people still don't pay attention to the Internet like they should.

Either way, this is good news for Sony, which seems to have not been doing too much of anything interesting lately. Will this boost carry the company through the Christmas period, and just how well will a similar move serve Sony in America? Time, like that child you touched, will tell.

A lot of people got on this boat to suckerville. Not surprised at all, all everyone wanted was a decent price.

Now time for the real trick, getting the games for the thing on shelves. What are all these new suckers gonna buy, when there's next to no games, and lack of PS2 support?

The IT crowd is awesome!

The Ps3 is now actually priced close to the other consoles, so it's not too surprising. For me its going to have to be sub £200

I guess you should buy one over here then Wardrox. They'll soon be 399$ which is just about 200 pounds.

I think it's become so common place to hate on Sony and the PS3 over the internets that he assumes that dispite this good news for Sony, people will come in and bash them regardless.

Hmm. I thought a survey said most europeaens didn't think it was expensive. Those liars.

And cereal, still making a fuzz about dualshock 3? Rumble is so 90s anyway. It's cool but not necessary enough to make it a reason not to buy.

I don't understand the 178% figure. Previously they sold 10, now they have sold 17.8? How do you sell 17.8 consoles?

wow comradetrotskii, you got some sharp wit there, I don't know how you come up with such gold. Maybe one day someone will give you recognition for stating something that has been stated so many times that it becomes a trite expression of verbal vomet.

The lack of backwards compatibility!

thisissami: 178% = 1.78. 10*1.78 = 17.8. Thats the only way I can understand a percentage. I've always been unclear as to whether your figure (in this instance) is what they actually mean.

Brainderailment: You've got to take the easy targets. If it makes you feel any better I have owned a PS3 since its UK launch.

Oh basic economics, how you make people demand for a product has changed, it hasn't.

The demand curve hasn't moved one iota, you just slid the supply curve down to a lower price level and higher output level.

and i think a wii shortage and the falcon chipset in the 360 fixing the overheat but creating 4 new problems like unable to read dvds, bad sound and other things, another blow to microsoft who cannot get their console stable and reliable.. sony will clean house this holiday...

I agree with Jim: Sony may have shot themselves in the foot by withholding the DualShock 3 from US/Europe until early next year. Seriously...what’s up with that? It’s going to be bundled with the new ceramic white 40 GB PS3s in Japan starting now, but they can’t produce them anywhere but in that country? I’m so glad I never bought a second SIXAXIS.
