Sony Australia have announced an astounding increase in popularity for the PlayStation 3. Based on information from retailers and NPD data, a 400% sales jump for the console happened soon after the price cut was announced at the Gamescom conference in Germany in late August. Michael Ephraim, Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia said:
This new price point really represents fantastic value for money as PlayStation 3 delivers full HD games, Blu-ray capability, plus music, movies, catch-up TV and more on demand. Australians love not only games, but also the quality home entertainment PS3 provides.
We're totally awesome, basically. At gamescom, the price cut reduced the cost of the PlayStation 3 in Australia by $50, taking the retail price down to AUD$349.95 for the 160GB console. While PS3 owners in other countries may think that price point seems high, just remember that the PS3 in Australia was priced at one thousand dollars on launch day. A thousand. Count 'em.

I dropped around $700 for my PS3 and Resistance on launch day....The thing is still running like a champ but I could have waited for a drop, I just I didn't :P
Clearly, you've never seen The Proposition, a Western film set in... wait for it... Australia.
I grabbed my system for US$400 when Circuit City was going out of business and I've been very pleased. Have been playing it a lot, recently, even for cross-platform games (they are almost always cheaper on GameFly's store than 360 versions). Good to know more people are getting their hands on the system. Hell, I'm even considering grabbing Battlefield 3 for it if it holds up better than the 360 version, despite the fact I have more friends on 360.
In other news, fuck FX network for getting me excited to watch "The Proposition" when after half a second I realize it's actually the god awful Ryan Reynolds/Sandra Bullock vehicle "The Proposal"
WHAT THE FUCK WAS I THINKING?!?!
Good thing the price is reasonable now.
"Some bugger who fuckin' hates every other bugger."
Loved it. Awesome flick.
Great news for Sony and Aussies. A new and incredible Frenzal Rhomb album just tops off what is so far a killer 2011 for the land down under!! :)
Sony really needs to step up their advertising in the US though. With the sheer quantity, quality, and diversity of current, and upcoming games the PS3 should be selling much better than it was.
Nintendo learned this the hard way with the 3DS and this news proves again that despite all the features offered the key point to the consumer (along with software) is price point.
That's... Not cool at all.
For the love of god, Australia, you need to stop banning anything rated M.
@David Rayfield, the price drop was $150 not $50. So it is not surprising to see an impact as it was a 25%+ price drop.
It's back to $349 now though.
But I got my PS3 at launch from Japan with a nice white model. Worked out nearly half of what I would of paid for it locally.
I would probably buy a new ps3 if they built wireless n into it. g doesnt cut it in my houses configuration
Also if you're new like me and you think all the shit about home is hyperbole... it's not. Don't load it up. Ever.
BTW although the rrp for the 160 is $349.95 almost everyone sells it for $298
The biggest issue that I noticed since I moved to Sydney is that even after a game has been out for a few months/years the prices don't tend to go down much at all. Sale prices go down to the $40 range most of the time.
I can even get a game from another country where the AUS dollar is worth 1/2 the amount and still get the game for less!
For example...I just received MotorStorm: Apocalypse brand new from the UK for $20AUS brand new. I can then go to any EB or JB Hi-Fi here and the same game will be $40 USED!
With all that being said I do believe Australia is slowly coming along to the point where the prices will be more reasonable eventually
Good thing the PS3 is region free heh.
Holy crap? Ps3 has 0 games in Australia? I thought... I mean for sure they must have at least 1 game by now? Shit, 0 games? Yeah, that really does suck for them then. But I could have sworn there was at least one game for the ps3 in Australia...0 games...dam...
Wait, so they actually do have games on their system? Or is the only game going to be Uncharted 3?
I dunno man, I heard once that the ps3 doesn't actually have games in Australia, and the only game they are going to have is a shitty indiana jones/gears of war rip off.
I love you man.
Seriously.
You're the best.
Never change.
so like, 3 games were banned/censored in '11, and that means "australia bans every game rated m"
