Here's something you'd think the Xbox 360 should be able to do without a hitch -- run Windows XP. I guess they weren't kidding when they tried to pass it off as a computer for tax breaks in the UK! As evidenced in this brief dull video, the owner of a Japanese PS3 has configured both Linux and Windows to run off reportedly unmodified PS3 hardware. While the video is skimpy with how-to details, it sure is eye opening (as if running Nintendo emulators wasn't cool enough). Personally, I can't wait to play Minesweeper on this new $600 eMachine.

The question is does the PS3 run windows as well as a $500 computer? If not, then what's the point? That being said, it looks like Sony did a few things (very) right with this console, but will they let us have fun, or firmware update us into oblivion?
Too bad it's just emulating x86 with the Cell and QEMU doesn't fully support Windows XP. Now if they put OS X on there I'd be impressed to say the least.
Aetsen, that goes against the OS X EULA (OS X must run on Apple hardware, but non-Apple OS's can run on Apple hardware... yeah, it's weird), even though you can do it with the (no longer updated) Mac-On-Linux project.
Sony can't really do anything to prevent any homebrew within the Linux system as long as it's allowed to run Linux on the PS3, but they will likely kill any attempt at making burned PS3 games run, so don't worry about losing homebrew!
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
