PS3 ProEvo Soccer locks game disc to online account? photo

If what Gamespot's review on Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer is true, a copy of the game could never be sold or loaned to another PS3 owner for online play without handing over account details.

From the review

It's also worth noting the online registration process, which locks your copy of the game to your Konami account for online play. This means that if you ever want to sell your copy of the game, the next person will be unable to play online unless he or she has your registration details. To our knowledge this is the first time this has happened in a PS3 title, and Konami's UK office declined to respond to inquiries over why the system was implemented.

A game that locks to the first person that owns it? That's a bold way to stop the used games problem dead in its tracks, though I'm not sure that any gamer would stand for this. If this is really the case, stores that stock used games (like GameStop) would have to somehow monitor if the game has had its online ability 'used' or not.

Although this is a Konami game, and the game uses a Konami account, it sounds suspiciously similar to other recent rights management issues Sony has had in the music and film industry. Let's hope we hear some clarification on this issue soon.

Is this meant to be an anti-piracy measure, or just and anti-used game measure? The former is stupid (it can be cracked eventually), and the latter just smacks of desperation.

How does it know? Do the disks have a unique code embedded in them or does it use a serial key like PC games?

I hate to use the slippery slope comment, but I think its going to happen more often. Look at Warhawk, with only one account able to use the downloaded one for a 24hr period. Or the crap with the PC BioShock.
I think developers are starting to realize the money they are losing over the used game trade market.

I always buy used games, and I always will. I may be a gamer, but I'm a consumer first and foremost.

Also, the grammar in that first sentence is wrong. First, it should be 'review of,' not 'review on.' Also, you need to either take out the word 'what,' or add the word 'says' between 'Soccer' and 'is.'

Wow, Konami...Don't do this for MGO, please! This is a great PR move, don't you think - one that should reverse Konami's skidding stock price?

Bad show, Konami. Boo and hiss.

@silverback55
The reason for the Warhawk thing is because you can download games to other PS3s - unlimited times to 5 different systems, if I understand the system properly - and they didn't want people to chip in $8 each and download the game to each of their systems. So it's tied to the account that bought it and can only be played from a single system in the span of a day. That only applies to the download version, as the disc version needs the disc to start.

I've heard theres a way to boot the disc version multiple times for lan game purposes, but I've just been jumping into games with friends online; looking into it hasn't really been an issue.

I unfortunately agree with Silverback.

I think we will see more of this in the future.

People in this day and age don't complain enough generally to make an impact. I do think this is directly aimed at used sales.

Don't buy PES for online play. Konami is not trustable at all. On 2007 January, I bought the PC version of PES5, because I did not like PES6. On April, they shut down the online features of PES5.

People did not react to this at all, some even commending Konami because 'they probably needed the server space, that the new games are coming out., and Konami got away with it.

What the misinformed soulds did not take into consideration was that Konami's online servers are merely like IRC servers, people just meet there and the game is hosted on *client side*, one player at each half, probably the load is a hell lot less than an IRC server anyway, people barely use it for chat, unlike a loaded irc server.

Also, this host on client-side lead to the following: there were all sorts of stupid people that cause lag on purpose when it is their turn to host, and Konami is to blame.

Buy this game if you like to play soccer with your friends, *at home*.

You know, I really don't have a problem with this just because I absolutely hate Gamestop and their stupid rip-off used games policy, where they pay some poor kid $5 in credit for a game and then go sell it for $55 (BUT THE ORIGINAL ONE IS $60 WHAT SAVINGS!) $5 isn't worth a scratched up-pages missing from the instruction manual copy of a game I could get brand new for basically the same price. And I refuse to support Gamestop's massive gouging scheme. I don't have a problem buying used directly from other gamers, but that seems to rarely happen since everyone trades their games in for credit at Gamestop.

Plus, if you're one of the many people who are against piracy because it's "stealing from the developer", shouldn't you be equally against used games?
Emrah's Avatar
Emrah at 11/01/2007 12:03
@Aerox:
Comparing buying used games to piracy. Wrong. If you believe in ownership, that this crazy idea that you own things that you pay for (not talking about subscriptions), you should be able to re-sell it to anyone you like.

Oh, I know it's not the same, but some of the arguments made by people when discussing piracy is "I don't give a shit about the stores, I just care that the people who made the game are getting screwed", but buying used from Gamestop seems to be doing the very thing that they're against.

I think it's perfectly fine for people to trade/sell used games to each other. My general beef is that I despite Gamestop for acting as a totally unnecessary middleman, ripping everyone off, and driving game prices in general up. And they're well within their rights to do it, I just hate it, and you should too. Paying people $5 store credit for a game they turn around and sell for $55 of pure profit is unacceptable.

I GameFly almost everything I play. Therefore, I couldn't GameFly this game. Now, I don't like soccer games and don't have a PS3, but I will one day, and this slippery slope would certainly keep me from GameFlying games where this type of DRM is implemented. For me, this means I wouldn't be playing those games at all. If this is a Konami thing, then I basically won't be playing Konami games on the PS3. If this becomes a PS3 thing, then I really won't have a reason to get a PS3.

If Konami or Sony is reading this: If this pattern continues I will not play your games. Period. I don't care how good MGS4 is.

The question is do you OWN the game, or are you LICENSING the game...this question will be more important as the software industry tries to avoid the same FAIL as music and TV.

To be honost, This isnt the greatest move by Konami. I mean, say if I did have a PS3 and this game, and my friend wanbted to try it for a weekend on HIS PS3, he wouldnt be able to, due to the fact I'm not giving my account info out to anyone. Atleast, he wouldnt be able to play online....So I dunno, this is an iffy thing on their part, Sony for letting Konami do it, and Konami for doing it.

I think one of the biggest problems with this is with renting games. Online gaming is the staple of this generation (not motion controls). If, when people rent a game, they can’t try the online portion, what will the reaction be?

Many won’t get to try the online feature which may convince them to buy the game. Others may feel that the game is broken since it’s not letting them get online. I see this hurting sales more than helping sales.

That's it There is now officially a CONSPIRACY against Sony

Game devs just want them to fail. Konami delays MGS4 then with a potential for a non US ps3 hit they cripple it so people will not want it.
