PS3 owners: Does the code 80010514 mean anything to you? photo

The Xbox 360's RROD has been the monkey on Microsoft's back for the past couple of years, but according to some reports, Sony has been dealing with some similar problems with the PS3 as well. Complaints on Sony's own forums show a small percentage of users being greeted with 80010514 errors, and finding out that their Blu-ray drives are no longer functioning. A quick search via the information superhighway seems to indicate that Sony has not released an official breakdown of the code, but that it veritably indicates an issue with the Blu-ray drive.

To be fair, it has to be mentioned that isolated reports of this error have been around for quite some time -- since the PS3's launch, in fact --  and that we've heard nothing about it coming anywhere near Xbox 360 levels of concern. However, it should be known that at least a couple people on staff know of others who have had issues with their PS3's giving up the ghost.

Since I've taken a liking to my own, and I'm aware of a few of you owning the hardware yourself, I just have to ask: Do you know of anyone personally whose had their PS3 go on the fritz? Inquiring minds want to know.

[Via Maxconsole -- Thanks, Justin!]

No that code means nothing to me BUT I and a few people on the Offiicial Playstation.com Forums ( Down til the 14th ) have had issues with our Blu-Ray Drives.

The problem started when I noticed my Call of Duty 4 disc had what could be best described as the metal lines on a dart board type marks on the back of the disc. They rubbed off but kept coming back. Anyway a couple of days later I switched COD4 for Tiger Woods 08 and the game was in my PS3 but it wasn't showing on my XMB. I put back in COD4 and had the same problem.

Anyway I rang the Playstation customer service number and got a refurbished PS3 in 48 hours.

I've got a launch 60GB and have nearly 400 WU's completed in the folding at home application, not to mention 100+ hours on Warhawk alone. No problems here, and this thing was folding 24/7 in the summer with temps in the 80's+.

My PS3 has had no problems...except I had to buy a new HDMI cable for some reason.

I got RROD on my launch 360 after 2 years and 2 months of heavy usage.

The second day I had my Wii it freaked out and had to be sent in...It blared some disgusting sound and would compumap (new term) the screen after the Press A screen...

Truthfully, from my point of view MS and Nintendo both did well in their service departments. But I only had to interface with my friend the Innertubes for the MS return. I actually had to talk to somebody about the Wii return, which was pleasant.

I still think all of this fanboyism is mostly just financial jealousy on the part of the partakers. You want it all, but you cant have it.

PC gaming sucks.

no problems here. the worst ive had are game freezes and lost network connections- both are very, very rare. i bought my ps3 on january 2nd of '07 and it gets used on a daily basis (on occasion its on for 10+ hours). its kept upright and currently has 8 inches of free space above it, a few inches on either side, and 6 inches behind (the most cramped its ever been). it also endures hot, lengthy summers in a dusty house w/o AC. it fires up, works, and sounds like the day i got it.

Don't tell anyone, but I had to send my PS3 in for this very reason after a firmware update. Luckily, there was still a week left on my warranty.

I just put a game in, got the error, and my Bluray drive said "peace, nigga." and never read a disc again.

i also had the same problem, i own a 20 gig ps3 was working fine up intill a couple days ago where i got the error code. i spoke with a sony rep and he told me that my blue ray lense is no good that i need to send it in for repair, i bought it in jan of 2007 so the 1 year warranty is up by two months, so sony said i would have to pay 150.00 dollars for an exchange, i was on the phone with sony for almost 2 hours trying to resolve the conflict, its only two months give me a break, so just wrote to (corp) waiting on email

Now guys, after reading all the comments, the rrod and the blue rays of death i wonder why we just dont get into pc gaming anymore... i mean, i have an snes still working. Consoles are not supossed to have so many issues.
I think this is what happens when you try to put everything and lots of functionalities in a single box.

*Remembers the nightmare of having to turn his PSone upside down to get it to work.*

I have less trust for Sony than I do the other console makers. I have had way more problems with their products than anyone else's. I've had one XBox die on me before, but that's it. My XBox 360 has never once given me a problem though. I've never had any problems with a Nintendo console, well, other than the occasional problem with the NES, but that's an early console so that's kind of expected.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my PSone and PS2, but I don't trust Sony's work at all.

I dont know if its the game (because no other games do this) but on my PS3 during NHL 08 (Normaly the second of third game i play in a row durring the dynasty mode) It will Freez dunig the part in between peroids when it tells you what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong (After you close out of that box to go to the Pause screen)
I think it is the game because its Only at the spacific time every time

RROD is largely due to bad design and shoddy/cheap construction, where this is likely a result of the mass production process; which will always turnout some defunct components. It's as simple as that.

Though who really knows. Sony had some major issues with the disk drives on first (maybe second as well?) run PS2's, so long-term degradation on the PS3 disk drive is entirely possible. I'd say if the console makes it through Xmas without increase with this error it's nothing to worry about.

Actually, the error has to do with the software around the PS3, or rather the firmware. I have witnessed this error, and it is not a failure of the drive as in many if not most occassions, you are still able to play DVD and Blu Ray titles with ease. The error occurs as you start a game. The only cause I can conclude from this is that it is caused by a corrupt install file, either from the firmware, or from a game patch, demo or install. Most issues the PS3 has occur right out of the box, meaning they had an error before or during shipment.
To avoid this error, make sure you dust your machine regularly to prevent shorts, and also, ensure you have a stable internet connection before you download.

You are a waste of space.

So, we have the Red Ring of Death, now Sony could have a Blue Ray of Death, now Nintendo needs a Green Light of Death and we'll have a full set.

Sony has not made a console with DEcent hardware in it's entire existance since it keep puting in cheep disc drives..

Sony got sued for the ps2 drive errors as they was just as cheep and big as problem as the xbox 360 failures.

Then there is the ps1 ohh how I could go on it's worse than the xbox 360 in terms of death rates.

and to this day I have not s seen a launch model or close to launch model PSX. (AKA everything before the slim tiny PSone) that did not die a quick death at the hands of final fantasy 7 or any other RPG on the things.

Remember having to turn those poorly made sony consoles upsidown to get the game to stop skipping and read disc?>

of course you do everybody who purchased a non slimsline had this problem and if you did not then you got one where they fized it at the end.

Great consoles sony, Im not sure how people forgot and stopped complaining but hey in 1995 to 1999 everybody complained 24-7/

Yep, I got this error code in march, the only solution was to bring to repair.
I tried to restart system, to reset system, to format the system and same error pop-up. As I read on several forums, it is the BluRay head which is broken.
I can mention that all PS2 games, PSN games work just fine, because ONLY the BluRay reader is broken.
It will be replaced, but I need to wait :-(

OG yes and before I paid to buy a ps1 to play my games I bought on I rented a bunch of them, every single one rented had skippy music, videos, or would not read a brand new scratched disc.

from diffrent rental stores too no less so I rented about 10 over a few months of course I thought sony console and controler was junk, the only thing worth anything in it was the CPU and GPU design that worked great until the CD drive died.

but HEy it keept getting game that was only on that damned ps1,that used to be on sega or nintendo so they forced me to but one and it died, so I had to buy a slim model. SO sega and nintendo screwing up made it so sony could throw out cheep consoles with cheep parts getting us where we are now thanks SEGA and nintendo.

ANd there is less ps3 out there than the others console and it has almost no games so of course it's percent rate is low..

When the thign gets games and get used everyday for hours and more of them get shoved into peoples hand because it's got a game that is worth putting up with sonys console for then watch the number rise.

@Cube: Do you remember that report that says the PS3 has one of the lowest failure rates for a game console in... oh, more than a decade? They get those numbers based on usage, not popularity. Complain about the lack of games all you like, but the machine is built like a tank. If you had problems with the PSOne, well... that's holding a grudge over quality for just a bit too long, don't you think?

I just received this error three days ago. The blu-ray drive has failed which means I can no longer play PS3 games or Blu-ray movies. I can still; however, play PS2 games, PS1 games, and DVD movies... and anything from the hard drive. I am not sure on the specifics but I guess it has something to do with the blu-ray laser.

Anyways, I called Sony up, gave them the error number and a detailed description of what happened and the steps I took to try and correct the issue. They set up a return and are sending out the materials so that I can send in my unit. The entire call took less than 5 minutes which shows that they got right to the point and took care of the issue instead of making it more difficult than it had to be.

**NOTE**
And for those concerned about sending in their 60GB PS3s here in the US, I specifically asked them if they had any issues with the supply and replacement of the 60GB PS3s and they told me that there was absolutely no wait or any problems whatsoever.

I got a launch day PS3 in the UK. A few weeks later, it shut itself down after a triple-beep. The sound and light combination, according to the manual, meant that the unit had overheated. I turned it off (from the back) and let it cool down. Tried it again, it worked for a few minutes then did the same thing again. Eventually, it stopped turning on properly at all - it just constantly thought it was too hot. Called Sony and they sent someone round with a brand new one 2 days later, and collected the faulty one. Great service, apart from the fact that Sony have no system for data transfer - there's no way to move your files from a faulty PS3 to another, unless you hook up your PS3 hard disk to a PC. My recommendation - back up everything! They won't let you just swap the drives over. So annoying!

I just replaced my PS3 last Monday due to the Blu-ray drive dying on me. At first, I thought I had a unique problem but I was surprised to discover through google search that many people seemed to have the exact problem. Xbox has its Red Ring of Death, I christen this the Blu-Disc of Death...any takers?

I am getting tired of the "powerful consoles" i.e. Xbox 360 and PS3, as each one has kneeled over on me. I am getting rid of the PS3 (mostly due to their horrendous customer service, it took them three attempts to swap my PS3 and I had to carry the heavy thing around for three days to my workplace!) I am going to stick to my good-as-gold Wii

I am officially getting that code now (80010514), if it reads the blu-ray disc at all. Just felt like popping an update for you all. Now awaiting my return materials. Typically from what I've seen, there's very low chance of failure if the system makes it through the first 6 months.
