PS3 owners, dig out your USB cables; firmware 1.82 hits photo
     Geek Essentials

The PlayStation 3 firmware revision that Sony's Eric Lempel mentioned a few days ago in Sony's official blog is finally live and available for download.

The update, version 1.82, enables playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files,  . If this means absolutely nothing to you, you're not alone. Don't worry your pretty little head over it. If you do know what I'm talking about, then there's certainly on reason for me to explain this to you, now is there?

Whether you want it or not, the firmware update will be necessary, so go find your USB cable and set aside five to ten minutes of your time.

@ some_dude:

A USB cable is used to connect the Sixaxis to the PlayStation 3. It's used for charging purposes, and when updating the system's firmware, it is ALWAYS required that you attach your Sixaxis to the console.

It's a small thing, but annoying enough for me to mention. :D

@some_dude:

PS3 controllers are wireless but can be connected via a USB cable for recharging and to communicate through the wired connection.

When doing a system update you are required to connect the controller via USB. You'd have to ask some PS3 engineer why. It's kind of annoying since there doesn't seem to be a good reason for it.

You have to connect the Sexaxis to get the update? I loled (mainly because it's been a long day)

That does seem to be an odd requirement, there must be some reason for it, but I can't think of one. Thinkin's hard!

It'd probably so your controller doesn't run out of battery during the update. Jusrt like updating a PSP.

Keep it coming boys-At least we get updates faily regularly. In the end these are add on exclusives-whether or not anyone cares. Some do Iam sure and some will profit from this. Good job Sony. Let all the naysayers rest on their laurels..soon Sony will slowly and surely re-assume greatness.

It's probably a combo of what Bricfa said and the fact that, should something in the firmware fail and cause the Bluetooth portion of the system to be rendered inoperative, they'll know that they can use some failover mode to access the controller to initiate some recovery mode.

Since an errant flashing can totally hose your system should you have trouble, I think it's a good idea to take every precaution.

I should also add that I'm always happy to see more codec support for *any* console. This goes double for MP4 containers, given some of the absurd amounts of compression it affords despite retaining awesome image quality.

Kudos to you, Sony.

What are the options for playing Divx/Xvid on your PS3? I've got a lot of my shit on an HDD with the originals in the closet and I'd like to play them from my server without having to dig forever...

If I had to guess, its the equivalant of a digital signature. The sixaxis doesn't require you to have a calibrated to your system controller. Hypothetically, I could look in from a window, start your console, and then update it needlessly.

While you balk, the average psp owner is frightened of people accidentally updating their firmware.

Actually, this is kinda cool. My audio card on the laptop just went, and most of the new anime I am downloading are .h264, so this is kinda opportune.
