PS3 outsells rivals in Japan following Yakuza 3 launch photo

We've pointed it out before, but all you need to sell your console in Japan is a Japanese game about Japanese things by a Japanese studio made for Japanese people. For some reason, the Japanese love that kind of stuff! The PlayStation 3 has put this winning formula to use, with PS3 exclusive Yakuza 3 driving sales and giving Sony's black box o' Blu-ray a leading position.

PS3 sales jumped 20,000 units in the week ending March 1, selling 36,513 units from the previous 16,149. This runs pretty parallel to Yakuza 3, with Sega's latest release pulling in 372,000 within the first week of release. The PS3 pushed the DSi down to second place with a solid 35,827 (an all-time low for the system) followed by the PSP with 35,588.

More good news for the PS3. Maybe 2009 will be its year, like Sony has promised since 2006? Probably not, but we can enjoy the fun while it lasts. Hit the jump for all the sales, if you're a numbers nerd.

PS3: 36,513
DSi: 35,827
PSP: 35,588
Wii: 17,876
Xbox 360: 11,795
DS Lite: 11,774
PS2: 5,099

Nice, didn't xbox 360 outsell everything last week because star ocean or some RPG came out last week. That's interesting that the wii and DS for 2 weeks in a row are not #1. Hmmmm, I'm sure it will all go back to normal next week.

Whatever, I'm just pumped that even if this doesn't come to the states that the PS3 is rigged where I can at least import this game and play it.

I enjoy the demo enough, so it's a worthwhile import for me.

I wish that picture was a gif, because I sense a quick kick to her stomach coming.

This will continue next week. Resident Evil 5 was just released and sold 278K, 222K on the PS3 and 56K on the 360, on its first day.

This is what exclusives do. Sony is reliant on third parties in Japan, for exclusives, a bit odd. Sony's first party studios usually serve for the non-japanese crowd, correct me if I am wrong. Imagine if Sony didn't leave that many jrpg exclusives to Xbox360.

I love the Yakuza games, and I said it before, I'd buy a PS3 just for this game if they simply confirmed it would be released in the US.

Folks I'm gonna use this chance, AGAIN, to point everybody to Yakuza-3.com the first and only fansite dedicated to the Yakuza series and with the goal of bringing Yakuza 3 and Kenzan! to the US, Europe and Australia.

Help us out, folks.

Selling more? They're probably extorting protection money courtesy of the Yakuza.
