PS3 outselling Xbox 360 three to one in UK photo

Despite Microsoft claiming that the Xbox 360 is more successful than the PS3 in Europe, some new numbers have come in that show the PlayStation 3 absolutely shredding its bitter rival apart. If the experts are to be believed, the PS3 is beating the 360 by three to one, with the PS3 Slim and price cut giving it a ludicrous boost

According to GfK Chart Track, the PS3 sales figures increased eleven times over, with the system even managing to beat the Wii and DS Lite. The PS3's success comes at a time when the Xbox 360 has improved sales of its own, enjoying a 29% increase. Even that's not enough to topple the Black Box o' Blu-ray.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite undercut the PS3 by £50 in the UK, but it seems that consumers have not been swayed by such chicanery. Sony has always had a firm foothold in Europe, so it's no surprise that the price cut has seen the PS3 do well. Even so, success on this level is pretty amazing, and it has to be said that the PS3 deserves a round of applause this week.

'Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite undercut the PS3 by £50 in the UK, but it seems that consumers have not been swayed by such chicanery'

My view is that if you couldn't afford an xbox Elite before you would get the Premium or the Arcade model. If you couldn't afford the Ps3 ... you wouldn't get a PS3.

So the price cut for the PS3 means that everyone that wanted one before can now (just) afford it whilst the price cut for the 360 doesn't matter as everyone could afford it anyway.

Its because everyone already has an xbox and can now afford to buy a PS3 too.

It's a case of "Oh look at the shiney shiney new PS3 slim". I know plenty of people that would eventually buy a PS3 to play Fifa, only because that's exactly what they did with the PS2.

It's good news to see the sale increases but bad news to current users as this will probably boost the number of people incapable of having a PSN account yet inherently do. I guess it's good at least that barely anyone uses a headphone on the service anyways.

Elite isn't worth the upgrade, and most people already have a lower-model 360. I have two. Not many people have PS3s. Now they can buy one.
Makes sense really, although I still would have expected more of a boost for the Elite's sales.

@CrocStock

I would say it's a good thing for current PS3 owners.

I now have a few more friends on my PSN account to play with and also if Sony's sales increase more developers will see the platform as a profitable one. Therefore... MORE GAMES!!

Of coarse initially the PS3 is going to get a big sales bump, just like every other time they drop the price... all the people that wouldn't or couldn't afford it's stupid high price are going to be the first ones to snatch up one now that they can afford it...
When all is said and done and that initial wave of gamers get their watered down slim, THEN we have a level playing field... until MS lowers the price by another $50 that is, which will happen if the PS3's start becomes a bit too brite.
In the US, where the PS3 is dragging and dragging is where it counts, and the numbers were not so positive for a price drop of this magnitude, we will see...

I think these recent firgures are due to the advertising that the new PS3 Slim is getting that is making people buy it over the 360 Elite. They clearly advertise that it has free online and any parent who talks to their kid about online gaming just before their birthday or christmas will tell them that they have to pay extra for Live. Plus, a lot of people have WiFi in their homes now so having to pay for an WiFi adaptor for the 360 is just a pain in the arse when both the PS3 and Wii are already built in. Fair enough, I'm getting my little brother Live for his birthday this year but that's because I know that we are both going to be using it a lot, but if I had to choose which I would want more as a gift, I'd pick my PS3 any day. Word to any Microsoft Executives out there, unless you make Live free in like the next two months, I think I can safely say that Sony may just sell more consoles this Christmas than you.

im not surprised by this. playstation is the default games console. everyones heard of it. everyones a slave to brand names. everyone had a playstation or ps2 at somepoint. once the ps3 became stlyish enough and cheap enough for the masses to get hold of, it was always going to come out on top in my opinion.

@ Jon B: Go to Vgchartz.com! Not many people have PS3s? This article is talking about the UK, where you'll see that the PS3 only trails by about 2 million, with the 360 having sales of around 12 million and the PS3 selling about 10 million.

That a bit more than "not many people".

Now seems the best time to buy a PS3 in the UK so I'm not surprised to see the sales charts reflecting this.

I look forward to Sony catching up with Microsoft. Competition is healthy for the industry and will benefit all its consumers.

While the 360 undercuts the PS3 by £50 Microsoft have actually raised the entry level price of the 360 with a hard drive from £160 to £200 because they got rid of the Pro SKU.
At least the £50 price difference is something to consider if you’re purchasing a system here in the UK. At $300 I can't think of a single reason why anyone would choose the 360 over the PS3 over in the US.

Sony has spent £82m on an advertising push here in the UK but i've only one advert so far and that was during the final of Big Brother... a show that hardly anyone watches anymore.

It only highlighted Buzz, Singstar and LittleBigPlanet as well =(

I worked for GfK for 2 years. From that experience I seriously doubt those figures are even close to what they suggest. Not only are employees expected to make stuff up to hit targets, team leaders would get bonus pay if their projects gained results that were controversial/unexpected etc. That company is full of shit, and I would need much more time than I have to list all the dodgy behaviour they are involved in.

The PS3 Slim seems to be kicking ass in the states as well. I have quite a few friends calling me for help finding one (being "the videogame guy" and all) as every Target and WalMart in the area is sold out.

Good show, Sony! Now next time you launch a new console, remember to make it skinny, $300, and packed with a 120GB hard drive (or whatever the 2013 equivalent to that is).

there should be a captain obvious image on this post. It's a new hardware refresh at a much lower price point, the real news would be if it didn't sell at least three times the 360.

Great news for Sony. I may actually pick one up again now. Hopefully MS gets a good thrashing in a sales charts in the next months forcing them to step up to the plate and regret raising the price of their arcade (RROD replacement option) SKU.

Ill admit that whats tempting me towards picking up a PS3 is mainly the Blu-Ray player, as the games so far (exclusives and otherwise) havnt been to my taste on the system. Hopefully this will change soon and it can be perceived as more than just a backup console and movie player.

I know about 4 or 5 of my friends are just about ready to drop the 360 and these are hardcore MS supporters who took it personally that I went with a PS3 in the first place. Between the price cut, free online and more reliable hardware, the PS3 has all the momentum going for it.

... statistics are a wonderful thing... depending on how you slant them, you can prove most anything you want. Glad to hear the PS3 is doing well, but the only thing that really counts in the end is corporate profitability and the ability to maintain support for the platform.
(then again, I bought a Dreamcast about 8 months before Sega announced that the hardware field wasn't profitable for them) :(

So when they gonna tell us how it's doing in the states? This is all good and everything too, but come xmas we're gonna see the real rush to buy the ps3. Hopefully they keep them stocked enough to prevent any casualties as people go Lord of the Flies over them. We prolly won't see sales figues for it till some time after, and probably directly related to how well it did.

It's nice to know so many bright young faces, who had been barred from getting the console before, will wake up xmas morning to a new ps3. I remember the feeling I got when I'd get my new consoles on xmas.

PS3 is the better choice if you already have a decent PC. Most of 360's "exclusives" end up hitting PC anyway. I just bought a 360 to pick up the random scrap games I wasn't able to play before.

I'm glad the only thing to come on this site was just "Good for Sony!"s because other forums are trying to use this as the reason why the 360 and the Wii sucked all along. I find it sad that some people have to have the console that everyone else likes in order to prove that their wining or some stupid shit.

People still use the "IT'S POPULAR IN JAPAN!" excuse and I hope that this doesn't become the next thing to help fantards stroke Sony's alreadly over inflated ego. It's doesn't help that the same people that claim the only reason the Xbox and Wii are selling is because people are stupid have now done a verbal 180 and the public's opinion is suddendly so much better when it meets their own.

Oh and good for you Sony!

Is it really outselling? Or just making up for the lack of sales where ppl waited till its release? Only if it maintains this kind of form(which is doubtful) will it really mean anyting. I mean if I was saving up for a PS3 i'd wait until the slim version and a major price cut so makes sense the sales will spike. Still not buying it until it has more then 3 games I can't get on my 360.
