While the PS3's performance in Japan isn't exactly boo-worthy, it isn't rocking quite as hard as Sony might like it to (although comparing anything to the ridiculous success of the Wii is the ultimate recipe for flaccidity). SCE Worldwide boss Shuhei Yoshida recently commented on the topic at the Games Convention in Germany:
It’s mostly a software thing. Price is important, but relative to the the value consumers perceive. There are lots of consumers, game fans in Japan, that are waiting to spend their money.
What’s happening is that lack of support from the Japanese publishers - not necessarily from intentions but from development capabilities.
Long story short -- the games aren't there for all the different types of gamers out there. I love my PS3, but I'm not sure I'd disagree. Here's an idea, developers: make some RPGs. Lots and lots of them. There are hardly any for the system as of now, and if Japan loves anything more than rhythm games and sadistic forms of sexual torture, why, it's RPGs. That recipe worked well for the 360 -- why not give it a whirl?

Plus seriously, Ninja Gaiden is on its 4th remake/rerelease, not to mention Resident Evil is on its 14th remake (*sarcasm*)... why cant a title thats clearly more successful get a proper remake?
Or maybe that would just be cool, I dunno. Personally I think they're gonna blow it.
I think one reason alot of people want an FF7 remake, beyond it being a great game, is due to FF7 getting unjustly ripped on because people say it was famous simply for having breakthrough graphics. So people I know want the game brought to another system just to show that the game was succesful for its storyline and that the game itself can stand the test of time.
In regards to chapters in the FF7 universe, they've given us plenty of that with Advent Children, Before Crisis, Crisis Core & Dirge of Cerberus, so beyond that it seems like the last thing to do is give a proper facelift to the game that inspired all these new chapters... Although I would still like a prequel where you actually fight as Sephiroth during the Wutai wars (a Sephiroth-esk Devil May Cry styled game?).
Also, I agree with Syn... I think an FF7 remake is coming the moment production on 13 and Versus 13 is completed, mainly because the FF7 team part of the 13 team at the moment.
...Because it would be awesome. Not to mention end any hope of the 360's success in Japan :D
