PS3 Modchip is now banned in Australia photo

Sony has been granted a temporary injunction against the new PS3 mod known as PS Jailbreak in Australia. The ban Down Under is through the end of August, which gives Sony a bit of time to get their case together for a permanent ban on the chip. It looks like Sony is already hard at work trying to keep the piracy at bay.

For now, Aussies, there's a no-go on chips for you, as the import and sale of the PS Jailbreak is totally shut down. But they're sold out anyway. Kotaku says that if they fail, chips can go back on sale start September 1st. I can't imagine that the nation's court would let that happen.

For everyone else, the official webpage for the device has an authorized outlet list.

I'd never buy one (pirates can suck a fat one), but I'm interested to see how this all plays out.

I would be more accommodating if Sony didn't dick over the Other OS function.

Are people still mad about the other Os feature. Which no one really used sure they shouldn't have gotten rid of it but that doesn't condone piracy

Word is it's also been reverse engineered, by a German team- http://www.ps3hax.net/2010/08/ps-jailbreak-reverse-engineered/

While I still don't want it to be too easy, for gaems' sake, I would like to be able to buy a chip or two and get my solderin on if it means I get OtherOS back.

@IronKnight

Mad? No, but I was sad to see it gone, it was fun to have. Nowhere near essential, as some claim, but again, if all it takes is an afternoon project to get it back, I'm in, because tinkering was why I liked it in the first place.

Yeah! How dare Sony try to stop parasites from stealing games!

I think its interesting to see that Sony is trying to stop the physical distribution of this device, rather than doing what a lot of people predicted, and just patching it out with a firmware update. I think this suggests that the way this jailbreak mod works, they might not be able firmware it away. After all, it supposedly emulates the same "dev mode" state that all ps3 developers use to test iterations of their game. having to lock out that ability means they'd have to provide a ALL ps3 developers with a new debug system/method.

Australian gamers already have it pretty hard. This certainly won't help. You need serious guts to be a gamer in Australia these days. For all the things the US does wrong, I'm glad to live here where my rights are put ahead of whoever has the most expensive stable of lawyers (some of the time anyway...).

Unsurprising. Like the R4, the fact it may have been intended for some legitimate use doesn't alter the fact most people will use this thing for piracy.

Good for Australia. Pirates ruin everything.

@amtalx It's not actually that bad over here. The last game refused classification I can't even remember- and none (that I can recall) have exactly been any good. Apart from a bit of inflated pricing, there's really not much of a difference here than overseas :). I think saying we don't have 'rights' is a little strong- we just have a couple outdated rules and a legal system that hates pirates (for good reason).

Anyway, people who really want this are just going to import it anyway. Not that I really care- I only have an Xbox, haha.

you can't pirate games with it, only copy directly from a bluray.....until a homebrew app arrives, then a cfw.
