PS3 likes TV: DVR facilities planned

PS3 likes TV: DVR facilities planned photo
     PS3

Continuing its movement to make the PlayStation 3 your catch-all media megalith, Sony has announced that the black box of Blu-ray will hopefully boast a digital TV tuner in early 2008. Next year, PS3 owners will be able to record television via the console, which is a pretty neat extension if you're into watching the mewling slew of garbage that supposedly passes for TV programming these days.

The news was revealed by Warwick Light, sales and marketing manager of Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand. ""We're also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder," told local Site The Press.

I'm up for it.

I've been wondering when they would do this. I saw someone mod a ps3 with linux using it as a dvr.

This will also mean new SKU's for bigger HDD's? Since consumers obviously can't swap their own hdd's and all that :)

And indeed, +1 internets for the Peep Show ref!

You won't be able to use this with your current cable service, but if you want to pick up local HD channels and record them, this will be a nice feature. Of course, you could do it with Media Center and Vista and just stream it, but not everyone has those OS's.

I'm gonna need to upgrade my HDD if this is the case. Good thing Sony allows you to do it yourself.

Now that's a killer feature. It would be nice though if they support existing USB digital tuners such as popular Hauppage ones just not some Sony branded device.

This is a great feature and is one I might buy a PS3 for. Epic use of the Peep Show pic. I love that series. I can't wait to see that Mitchell and Webb flick "Magicians". Hopefully it heads here to the US.

Oh yeah? 24, Heroes, House, Lost, The Office, Prison Break, Scrubs, Bones, Law & Order (and its numerous spin-offs), The Simpsons, and Family Guy. All of those shows are on American network television, and they’re all awesome.

sunami88... but what about teh Law & Order!? or rather Law & Order:Criminal Intent...if they still have it.

So...since there are no good games, you get to record teh TV?

Well, favorite TV shows are a matter of opinion, and I agree with you that Family Guy just hasn’t been the same since it came back from being canceled, and that Simpsons episodes over the past five seasons have generally been average at best. That doesn’t mean I won’t still watch it when it’s on, though, especially since the last two episodes of this past season (#399 & #400) were two of the best in recent memory.

Right, that’s why I noted that it was American TV I was talking about. As long as you were just discussing British television, it’s cool.
