PS3 leaderboard hack ruins Modern Warfare 2 for everyone photo

Time for yet another story about what great people we gamers can be. Some nefarious new hackery has been wrecking the PS3 version of Modern Warfare 2, allowing cheaters to scale the top of the leaderboards with ludicrously high scores. Not ones for subtlety, the cheaters have awarded themselves impossible statistics, such as gameplay time running into tens of thousands of days.

The problem appears to be incredibly widespread, with hacking information readily available online for people with so little self-esteem that they need to cheat in an online videogame to make themselves look like they've accomplished something in life. So far, neither Activision or Infinity Ward have responded to the this new issue, although a fix shall surely come soon.

So, why is it that the PS3 version is suffering all these hacks? Perhaps because they know Sony won't be doing anything about it? Looks to me like the PlayStation Network could well become a haven for the scumballs of online gaming.

This happened in MW1 with people gaining -3892189347 K/D ratioes by glitching in Cage Match.

Plus I think it's done on PS3 because you can manipulate the save files on the removable hard disks, but don't quote me on that.

I think the PS3 versions of games are more easily hacked because nothing's proprietary - You can easily transfer saves and other files from your PS3 to your PC. This is usually a good thing, but you occasionally get assholes like these guys who ruin it for everyone - That's why so many Wii and PS3 saves are locked to the consoles. It's annoying as hell, but look at what happens without regulation. :-( Remember the flying player hack in the first Modern Warfare for the PS3?

How much do you have to suck to even attempt this? Granted, I suppose there isn't really an incentive not to do it, since Sony doesn't care, but still. This and the stupid martyr glitch slowly make me feel decent at MW2, because I don't have to pull shit like this.

Because thanks to the internet, everyone suddenly started using that martyr glitch conveniently same day as the news posts.

Again, fatso, it's not sonys job to fix infinty wards lax programming. Killzone 2 works just fine.

You used to be entertaining but now you are just like a broken record.

Going on and on about this being sonys problem. It's one fucking game you moron, they are plenty more that work just fine.

Please go eat a twinkie and calm down.

I don't mind this in a single player game. Hell, I remember get a save file for Lumines on the PSP so that I could listen to the soundtrack (it wasn't like I could exactly pick it up anywhere).

When you use these kind of methods in multiplayer, you must absolutely hate fun. Sure, it's a rank and a number on a videogame. You did nothing to actually earn it. You didn't even really play to get this. I thought that was the reason you bought videogames? Oh well.

I don't rly see how a hack like this ruins the game - the javelin thing definitely can be a game breaker but honestly who gives a shit if somebody has a K/D of 12475268645/0.

There's quite a big difference between a hack and a glitch. If it's really a hack then Sony should probably address the issue. Glitch's are a different story in my opinion.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the end. Ultimately I don't give 2 shits because all I care about is having fun and getting trophies(leaderboards are neat but I care more about friendboards). Also my MW2 boycott is running strong so I couldn't care less about the specific issue.

He didnt slate sony at all.. just suggested that unless it gets fixed psn will suffer. I personally think its a bit shit. what microsoft do is fucking well out of order. But, sony and ourselves will suffer unless this gets fixed!? Its slack of Activision and Infinity Ward to be ignoring it [if they are] as it is entirely their problem. But, hey.. since when did Activision give a fuck about us?

Infinity ward is partly to blame here. Surely, the scumbags are scum, but the fact that they made their save file in text editable format (at least for the first MW) was inexcusable. Just encode your save file?! As for the glitches, they'd better fix it soon.

Again... not a Sony issue... a dev issue.

Besides... the only people who have their day "ruined" by not seeing their proper placement on a leaderboard need to get themselves a life. Leaderboards are almost always filled by glitchers and cheaters. It's the rare dev that looks after their leaderboards and even devs like Incognito, Insomniac and Guerrilla who try to retain the integrity of their leaderboards by resetting stats of those that cheat still have a hard time telling the difference sometimes.

The truest "leaderboard" is skill shown in the game... not on a leaderboard.

How is he being a stuck record just because he shares an opinion your "readers" have had about you for 3 years now? Are you saying he's been following you around for 3 years accusing you of the same thing? Or do you somehow believe that this one guy is every single person that has ever been on the internet for the last 3 years?

I don't think you actually meant to choose the word hypocrite at all. That just doesn't make any sense in the context of things. Maybe for once, instead of fumbling for insults, you should just try ignoring people or better yet, responding with intelligible debate to get dialogue moving forward.

Oh oh, let me guess. This advice will be met with negativity. Or maybe it'll be met with something smarmy? You have two sides to this record. Which shall it be?

The PS3 network is completely inferior to XBL.. dropped connections, slow matchmaking, lag. Not only that but Sony doesn't give a shit about what people do on the network, for example people using clan names like KKK, NIGR and shit like that on MW2. I guess you get what you payed for.

Twist it however you want, but you know it is bullshit, furthering the proof that you are a glorified TROLL. I can't believe you get paid to do this shit.

He is not being a hypocrite unless HE HIMSELF has been posting that exact same thing for 3 years (if he has, you win, Jim, you win). You admittedly say that you have been hearing it for 3 years (and I can guarantee that it has not been from him only), maybe you should TAKE A FUCKING HINT. You hear it every day for 3 years because you are a waste of fucking space and a glorified fanboy troll.

Your satire was funny the first time, not the 300th time. Your little spins on each article to cause controversy to cause more hits (because there is no other reason someone with half a brain would think this is a SONY problem) indeed works (look, here I am posting!). But if that is how you/Destructoid's business model works, I find that pretty sad. Stop with the troll bait.

I realize that I have been saying this for a while now myself. Every so often chiming in to give you the business. I am part of the problem That still doesn't make me a hypocrite though. It makes me consistent. And so are you. And so was George Bush. I hated his ass too.

Runtheplacered:

Hypocrite is exactly the right word for it. He has used the insults more than once. In fact, he made the same insult twice in one comment within this very thread. He is a stuck record. He criticized me for being a stuck record. Hypocrisy.

Sean007s:

It is and it isn't. The point here is that the PSN will get a bad reputation if Sony doesn't try and stop this kind of bullshit happening. Right now there are few consequences for griefing and hacking on the PSN and this makes it look bad. MW1 suffered from issues exclusive to the PS3, and older games like Killzone 2 have fallen apart with no moderation.

I don't think the PSN is a bad service -- far from it -- but Sony's hands-off approach is giving the cheaters and griefers free reign. If I had to choose between PSN and XBox Live for my online gaming, I'd go for the network that has far less tolerance for cheaters. So, while technically a game-specific problem is not Sony's issue, it could have long-term affects on Sony's service. Ergo, Infinity Ward's problem IS Sony's problem.

Jim "Robert Summa" Sterling strikes again.

Anyway, this type of hacking is done just to show you it CAN be done.

The kind of "game hacking" I hate is leaderboard fixing in games where it means something. Like SF4. The top 3 or 4 people (besides the first on the list) got there by match fixing. They are all part of the same crew, and none of them have the skill to do so. Or at least it was like that when I played religiously. It was funny because even the one dudes girlfriend was up there.

I am dissapointed at Sony's ignorance when it comes to their service.
But i feel IW should be the ones doing something about it more than Sony should.
But I do thank destructoid for posting this article.

Let's say you were a stuck record advocating world peace for example then more power to you. Your not though, you just harp on about how the psn needs to get a grip blah blah blah, how the world will end for sony, because one over hyped game that 'THE MAKERS' fucked up dosen't work properly.

volatilis: I'm not upset as much as I am simply bemused. I never really insulted Sony or said this was the end of the world. I merely believe, however, that it would be in Sony's best interest to be more hands-on with this sort of thing. As I said earlier in the thread, PSN games have a habit of devolving into chaos and glitching. I tried playing Killzone 2 again a few weeks ago and it's a mess of team-killing, like the wild west or something.

It would be for the PSN's long-term benefit if Sony looked after its online games more. I love the PS3 and I would love for it have more multiplayer games, but right now multiplayer games have a limited lifespan on PSN without attentive moderation.

I ask that you do not write off the stuff I say merely as flamebait and try instead to understand why someone might have the opinion they have.

volatilis: You do know Jim is a satirical article writer correct? He's like... Stephen Colbert or Rush Limbagh, and to a lesser extent, Robert Summa (although Summa was pretty much a little dickish in general). He does it to get a rise out of the sheep-toiders. His true talent is how many people come into his posts and rage over every word he says. His posts nearly always have 100+ replies, even though he does fill the main page with a bunch of posts early in the morning (seriously on some days it should be called "Jim-toid")

But see, I can explain this to you, and to everyone else, yet it won't phase most people, and the next article Jim writes about how Nintendo is this, or Sony eats sushi off of what, or microsoft rabble rabble those, the same people and a slew of avatarless people come out of the woodwork.

Jims articles are more of a multiple entertainment package, then a single solitary written piece. If you take the seriously, you will get angry, because that's what he does. If you separate yourself from the article, and watch the multipost car wreck that unfolds afterwards, its pretty fucking amazing.
