I admit, it's not looking good for the PlayStation 3 right now. It's one thing to have sort-of-steady sales in the States, but the PlayStation bread was always nicely buttered in the UK and without that support, even I'm beginning to wonder if the console can truly "make it." According to the latest sales numbers from the Queen's land, the PS3 sales have dipped 82% during the PS3's second week of release. A stark contrast from the record it previously set. From GamesIndustry:
Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped dramatically on the second week of release in the UK, with official Chart Track figures revealing a fall of 82 per cent.Chart Track data is gathered from 7000 UK retail outlets representing 90 per cent of the software market, including GAME, Gamestation, Play.com, Asda and HMV.
A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent." Last week, Chart Track revealed that the PlayStation 3 had sold 165,000 units in the first two days following the launch, making it the fastest-selling home console in the UK.
God, I hate to ask this, but is it really the beginning of the end for the PS3 or is this just a minor hiccup? Please say hiccup. Perhaps everyone is just waiting for the good stuff to hit, right? Right, guys?

1) A price drop obviously and...
2) Some worthy titles.
Sounds obvious but Sony have still failed to deliever on both fronts. Dont get me wrong I'm no Nintendo or Xbox fanboy, I'm a Sega guy lol, but I've always loved Playstation though Sony are making it harder and harder to fall in love with the PS3.
I mean the graphiqs are equal, but the price ain't, The number of games neither, the service.. let's not start with that subject :p
Blueray is absolutely useless for now, so the major advantage of that gamestation is null...
I'll never spend 600bucks for that, Sony has just disapointed me a bit too much, but hey, if you still think the PS3 can make it go ahead, buy it, I won't fake it, if somebody was going to GIVE me one I'll surely play it, but I don't see that coming :p
Personally I'm waiting for MGS4 and couldn't give a fuck about FFXIII. One game lol
That DVD format coming out in China will probably dominate seeing as it will have no competition with the billions of people over there.
and some new and improved gameplay videos of lair...i might think on getting me one...
That it sold that much after all the PR disaster Sony has suffered speaks for how strong of a brand the Playstation is.
I have a hard time seeing this as the end. If Sony gets their shit together. It will by 2010 be the biggest console on the market no doubt.
Europe gets the shaft on price, so Im really not all that suprised, when you charge over $800 USD and $100 USD for games. While taxes are higher in Europe, it just doesn't justify that high of a price differential.
The Gizmondo is the only console you will ever need.
EVER.
Oh wait, that's advice that should have been followed through months ago. Yikes.
Everyone I know who owns a PS3 claims it is amazing, but they are all considering buying something else, or playing their 360 about 24 hours more a day than their PS3.
If the system set records in its "first" week, then shouldn't we expect a low for several weeks after? I mean, they sold a bunch load, but everyone who wanted one got one.
Who waits for week two to buy a launch system?
Yep, that second week is really when all the fence riders jump off it.
Anyways, there's not a lot that cam save Sony right now and the things that can don't look likely to happen.
1) Exclusives: It's going to take about 8-10 good games that either exclusives or have content that makes the PS3 version than the others (think Link in Soul Calibur III) and I don't see that happening anytimes soon. Sony is bleeding exlusives at the moment and the only two that are probably going to stay exclusives, MGS4 and FFXIII, won't be enough to pull the system out of any kind of rut.
2) Price: A price drop will come, but not in time and not significant enough. If the PS3 does receive a price cut, it's not going to be more than $50 which is just going to be like a punch in the face. Sure, $550 is less than $600, but it's still far more than I'll ever pay for a console.
3) Blu-Ray: Blue-ray isn't doing bad at the moment, but sadly it's in made only of losers so it really doesn't matter. Not enough people have the TV's to take advantage of Blu-Ray or even HDDVD so there just isn't a need for media switching yet. Most people that do own an HD TV aren't going to throw away their DVD collection just yet either, they would rather wait until a clear winner comes out so they aren't left with a dead media player or dead media.
4) Online: The PS3 has the potential of having a good online service, but sadly it's trying to copy Nintendo and MS and it just can't win. Live is beyond awesome and Sony is never going to match that for free and the PS3 Home thing will never be as cool as Mii's and it's not nearly simple enough to compare to Achievements.
5) Attitude: Sony could improve their attitude and make things at least a little better, but it's not going to happen. How many times have we said "well this should make Sony a little less arrogant" or something along those lines? Too many to count. How many times have they changed their attitude? Zero. Sony isn't going to change their attitude anytime soon and when they finally do, it will be far too late.

Long story short, the PS3 launched too early. All could have been fixed if they launched Christmas '08 and I could easily see that as the dominant console in 2010. Now, it's just going to be this gen's Gamecube. The people that have it will love it and it will have some grat games, but it will never do well.
[/long post]
People keep saying "It just needs some good games." I honestly think it is too late for that. The only real system seller right now would be Final Fantasy XIII (all 27 versions of the game). MGS4 is popular among hardcore gamers, not the mass market so MGS4 won't be a system seller. Other than that I can't really think of any game that would make people want a PS3. The mass market can get both Madden and GTAIV on the PS3 or teh 360. And with so many people already with a 360 it is likely that the person will get a 360 over a PS3.
I really think it is just too late for Sony.
Sony is not doomed. And all those who wish otherwise should know that would be a very bad thing for the industry. Actually, the same goes for Nintendo and Microsoft.
Competition is good.
Blue Dragon is coming out soon, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Lost Odyssey, Shadowrun, Huxley. all these coming out within this year I believe.
These are just a few games I came up with off the top of my head. The only game I can think of for PS3 is Resistance. and Ratchet & Clank is supposed to be coming out sometime, prolly next year.
If there is no demand for a system then it is not going to sell. This is extremely bad news for sony. When other systems sales drop tremendously the following week it is because there is no supply, there are no systems to sell. But there are plenty of PS3s sitting around and they aren't selling.
Ok, well, I think he meant BESIDES those games. What else is there huh? Yeah, thats what I thought.
;)
Played Dead Rising, not that impressed. Played one of the Burnouts on the first XBox, it was fun but I dont need to play it on the 360. Played Oblivion on my PC a year ago, 120+ hours finishing all main and a lot of the side quests. GRAW was pretty good but I woudlnt spend $60 bucks on it or the 2nd one. Getting Rainbow 6 for the PS3 at the end of the month.
I plan on buying PS3 versions of all of the titles coming out on both systems because hey, I have HDMI hooked up to my PS3. :)
A lot of people don't think about the exclusive titles that are under the radar right now no one knows about.
"I love it when a pompous fanboy gets shut the fuck up by his failing system."
Problem is that they're not shutting up. >_<
And for people saying the 360 doesn't have good games, pretty much what namelessted said. Good game doesn't necessarily mean what you like, it just means what the big games are. About half the games in his list I hate but I still recognize they're big names.
And as for the sales, sales slumping 8% isn't a big thing for the 2nd week, but sales dropping 82% is. Go back and look at the 360 and Wii sales charts and I guarantee they didn't drop anywhere near 82% even months after launch.
And yeah, quantity on shelves after launch really tells you all you need to know. 87% of statistics are made up on the spot and don't mean anything, what matters is what you can actually see. Sony launched in Europe with, what, 300k? They sold about 165k launch week. Last week they sold about 30k meaning there are about 100k launch consoles not being sold along with whatever was shipped after launch.
"A lot of people don't think about the exclusive titles that are under the radar right now no one knows about."
Unanounced exlusive titles don't sell me a system, released exclusive titles do.
As for what you said about the games, read my previous post.
2. How much did you pay for your HDMI cable? if it was more than $15 you payed too much.
3. what exclusives are under the radar right now? I know of Lair and R&C off the top of my head. But why are they under the radar? It is Sony's job to try to get people to want their product and keeping products under the radar is the worst way to do that.
I just don't think it's fair to say "there's no demand." I think I get what your saying. But a lot of people want a PS3 but either can't afford or just refuse to pay out the ass for it. That doesn't mean no one will ever buy one...
I'm not saying Sony will "win this generation" I just don't think they are completely fucked... We'll see how effectively Sony can drop prices without going bankrupt. It should be interesting.
I paid $14 (Canadian) for my HDMI, my buddy paid $115 for his TV to DVD one...I laughed in his face.
I'm with the games on this one for the PS3 as soon as some big hitter arrive people will be more willing to purchase the system. I have owned my PS3 and I still own 1 game and am thinking about Oblivion or Motorstorm...but I'm not too sure right now and I would bet that if the Wii did not launch with Zelda behind its ranks it would not have sold as it did as I mean c'mon, the other games for Wii suck hardcoreingly bad.
IMO
Also, Sneak King. :D
Also, my previous comment about a pompous fanboy getting shut the fuck up by his failing system wasn't directed at any of the conversation here in the comments section.
...just saying.
You seemed to say it much more elequantly than I ever could LOL :-)
