PS3 gets an exclusive new Rockstar franchise, take that ho! <3 Chad Warden photo

According to the mysteriously-named Playstation Blog, Michael Shorrock, the Director of Third Party Relations at SCEA, has announced that Geoff Keighly has announced that Rockstar Games has announced an exclusive, brand new franchise for the PS3. Rockstar has mentioned before that the 360 gave the company some considerable challenges due to the lack of disc storage capacity and how poor people aren't required to get a hard drive, so it comes as no shock that they would want to "make a game that you can truly only do on the Playstion 3..."

The game is NOT LA Noire, but a completely original, previously-unannounced franchise. This is going to go a long way in silencing the rumors of the GTA-makers preference towards Microsoft's console due to the exclusive episodic content and Rockstar spokesman Hosi Simon's recent comments regarding which version of GTAIV consumers should pick up.

No matter what happens, whether this game is the next Midnight Club or an arbitrary disappointment like Bully, Red Dead Revolver, State of Emergency, Manhunt, or the Warriors, fanboys are going to mark this one down as a major victory. It is, considering Xbox 360 gets a few sporadic episodes and Sony gets, you know, a whole game, but the one thing the world doesn't need is more Chad Wardens. Or Mexicans.

This is normally the part where I would pick a fight with a Dtoid community member and spam a few hundred comments but wouldn't you know it, it's already been done this week...

Hopefully they actually show this "PS3 potential" I keep hearing about.

Oh, and I'm just posting to let you know that the title pic has been saved to my desktop and is 5 minutes away from getting manipulated to death by the latest in photoshop technology.

This had better not be L.A. Noir!

I am Photoshop-less here in San Diego, have at it!

PP (heh), it's not. It's a completely new, unannounced franchise.

Well at this point I wouldn't call this a major win, but I bet it piss M$ off, after they just handed R* a ton of money.

And you think Sony won a complete exclusive with their good looks and lackluster sales?

After reading the PS3 blog (which doesn't work correctly in older Firefox versions btw?), it's indeed not L.A. Noire :)

This had better not be a Project Sylpheed then!

Sweet! I got credit for this awesome.. how bittersweet. Getting credit for this tip = best (and worst) day of my life thank you D-toid.

@Haley - tell me you've seen A Man's Country (or Gunsmoke)! Audie Murphy ftw!

On topic - Sony really razzle-dazzled me with this one. I thought they had given up on bribery.. but if this game wows me like GTAIII, I might have to sell myself to a thousand fat chicks for $50 bones a piece to finance a PS3.

If your from the future then tell me sir "WHAT OF DONUTS?!?! ARE THEY ALL GONE???"

I just hope its another mature game, id love to see what they could do in the sci-fi action/adventure genre. Theres so much bullshit in that genre that i think if anyone could bring some style to it my moneys on Rockstar.

L.A. Noir is something that id love to play (huge Maltesese Falcon/Chinatown fan) but apart from that trailer last year...Nothing. Perhaps ill have to don my mac coat and go on my own investigation. Hmm...

It's too bad that that comment about disc space storage is bullshit. There is more than enough room on a DVD, especially a dual layered one. Blue Ray is pretty unnecessary at this point.

Will likely be a throwaway title that they're not planning to get much sales out of, since PS3 is the worst selling machine of the three companies.

3rd party exclusives are a myth. I learned that when RE4 came to the PS2.

What ever console has the dominant lead in 2 years will have just about every 3rd party putting all it's games on there, PS2 style.

If that ends up being the Wii, then there will be detail removed versions of RE5 and GTA:IV on the system, as well as what ever supposed "exclusive" this is supposed to be.

That debunks the "Rockstar is owned by Microsoft oh noez" belief, at any rate. This is interesting, though Rockstar fails to interest me when it tries anything other than GTA, usually.

I find it a little hard to get excited for an unnamed exclusive(If that word can even be used for 3rd party games anymore).
Monte's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/28/2007 09:07

Y'know, now it makes even less sense why Rockstar would not bring episodic content and such to the PS3 for GTAIV... i mean, if they are planning on releasing a PS3 exclusive than they should be trying to help sony push more PS3's; afterall, the more poeple who have PS3's, the more gamers that have to sell their unnamed new game.
Maurice Tan's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/28/2007 09:31

@Monte: That depends. $50 million for not having to make it for two consoles is easy money. Making it for both will cost them more time/effort, more burnouts among their employees and even if they sell 4 million of the PS3 DLC, that will not make them $50 million dollars when you subtract the workcosts.
Given Rockstar's non-GTA sales track-record, the couple of more PS3's that are sold by GTAIV won't make up for the the investment they'd have to make.

Also: I really don't think they could give a fuck.

@TwistedImp: You are now my hero for the weekend! I will now fap to that instead of pictures of Leigh. Wait what?

All of Rockstars ventures outside of Grand Theft Auto (which wasn't their franchise in the first place) have failed.

@Jim Sterling: You can keep your "episodic content" on the Xbox 360 version of GTA4. I would much rather have a completely exclusive game from Rockstar on the PS3 than DLC. Have fun with your "new missions". Ahhhhhh ha ha ha ha

Why would you be laughing at me? I'm not Microsoft. I haven't lost anything. I'll be buying a PS3 as soon as I've bought my home theater, so I fail to see how this is a bad thing for me.

Until we actually know what new IP this is, we can't really say if it will make a difference. Everyone knows that GTA is the best selling R* game out there, so if I was the head of a corporation like MS or Sony I would rather have the GTA exclusive content. Just my $0.02.

I'm a big ball of happiness and sugarkittens.

I'm still quite skeptical of whatever this IP is, since I really didn't like Manhunt and the other non-GTA R* just never interested me much (though Bully is something I'll be getting eventually). However, R* do scale very well and if it says that it's working on a size that only the PS3 can handle, I'm almost intimidated by what they're going to give us.

Go PS3! Finally, we might be getting somewhere with this potential thing. Hopefully, we'll see it before xmas 2009 (4 full years after the 360 release). I'm not being sadistic or sarcastic - I just think it's important to point out. This is good news for Sony. It's just a shame they couldn't make it happen sooner.

I really do think it's time that MS starts requiring the HDD on some games. I understand the purpose of the core and how important it is in their approach, but it's time to mature the games a bit. If games like Guitar Hero II can require an additional piece of hardware (and sell really well at that), why can't other games require other hardware, like an HDD? Honestly, who doesn't have an HDD anyways?

Well as this comes as a no surprise its just a shame they couldnt go all out with GTA4 like they wanted to until the M$ bribe. Same with Stragehold, its obvious, you have 25/50gig of space to make a game compared to 4/8gig its a no brainer. Those up there saying more space is bullshit I think you need mental help lol.

Even dough I agree with BlackDove, other from GTA I havent been moved much by R* but lets hope they do something interesting.

Sony fanboys truly scrape the bottom of the fanboy barrel.

Hopefully these games won't be crap. Rockstar either hits home runs or just fails utterly miserably.
