PS3 Gallery: Gran Turismo HD makes real life look soooo last gen photo
     Simply Amazing

In one word: stunning. The latest screenshots of Gran Turismo HD are not only nearly identical to their real-life equivalents, but they are also crisper and better saturated in most cases. The attention to detail to everything from the car filth to the imperfections in the road truly position this game as the end-all real driving simulator. Well, until you bump into something at 130 miles an hour and your Ferrari reacts like a bumper car.

I shouldn't knock GTHD for that, though. Like the scientifically enhanced women that populate Miami, we're best served by ignoring certain fake physics, shutting the f*ck up, and enjoying the view. Massive gallery attached. If running demos of this game in mainstream retail shops doesn't sell PS3's, I don't know what will. Chad?

Which would you rather have in a racing game: realistic physics and body damage or better graphics?

This game never looks anywhere near as good as those screenshots when I'm playing it or in replay mode because everything is too aliased. And that's also on an HDTV.

Well its true, the real game will probably be not as realistic as the screenshots. But i do have to say, some of those screenshots look more real than RL

I wish real life was high def...wowzers! Umm but seriously...the only thing weird about the pics..like the one used for this story---why are the wheels not spinning? There should be some motion blur on those babies!

James, ok, I won't. Let me rephrase that...

Which would you rather have in a racing game: rumble and body damage or better graphics?

Bouncing of cars for turns = physics?

So do they actually have car damage in this one?

Just as expected from any random player.

The reason they all handled like shit is because you don't know how to drive a car.

I'm gonna giggity over this game! I liked the look of the demo. Loved that they added in force feedback for the wheels. Now I just need a new damn wheel. Stupid pedals are broken.

James, maybe even online. Hit me up on PSN @ BuckFitches or LIVE @ Buck F1tches, but I'm hardly ever on the PS3. I sold my PS3 and the only chance I get to play is at my friends house when his wife is sleeping or at work.

Graphics look great, but, as far as the game goes it plays like the ps one game of yesteryear. High speed crashes into invisible walls. NO DAMAGE. You can charge at the crowd and crash into some rope???? I hope Forza will make up for its graphical shortcomings by doing everything this SHOULD do. Next Gen....maybe next time.

Graphics are fricken sweet don't get me wrong, but I'd much rather have better physics and damage anyday. Especially in a racing game.

i could've swore i read awhile ago that they are going to put damage in GT5, but it probably won't be in there until the full release (my money says very late 2008).

think there is a chance that the full game will look this good? i mean, seriously... how long did it take them to make the GTHD demo? seemed like it was rushed.
MusashiX2's Avatar
MusashiX2 at 05/07/2007 17:08
btw, i wouldn't be surprised if they put damage in and make us eat our words. what i mean, is that they make it super realistic and people who don't know how to drive will get a DNF every time.

I'm not a fan of the GT series, but it's one of the few titles that justifies it's photorealistic graphics direction. The attention to detail is amazing, for car lovers this must be heaven.

I remember reading some interview with some Polyphony Digital dude, whom said that GT is not going to do car damage in the games until they find a way to realisticaly represent them.

So rather than having lets say, 36 odd breaking points like Burnout Paradise is supposed to have on the PS3, they say that they want more, to make it being worthy of being in the GT brand.

Or atleast that's what they say...
cjpkiller's Avatar

the polyphony digital guys are definitely anal as hell on their games...

adding something like crash support for them would be like another 10000 hours of dev work...

It does look fantastic. I actually did a double-take and thought that the labels for “GT HD” and “Real Life” were reversed. I might have to look into this for my PS3...

Still, though, you can tell...one thing they’ve never really done well in video games is living things — grass, trees, people, etc. And I don’t think they ever will. But yeah...this isn’t too shabby...

Yeah, all the effects in the world mean little if the rendering quality is a bit off. I prefer lower resolutions with perfect AA to high-res stuff with aliasing and moire problems.

*Blackdove: "The reason they all handled like shit is because you don't know how to drive a car."

Trust me, no Gran Turismo ever handled even close to a real car, even with simulation tires.

I love the GT series. Too bad we have to wait so long for GT5 to come out. Plenty of online racing and custimizing in Forza to do until then though.

Looking really good. Hope they throw in a few more courses too. Love to Spa or Bathurst make it in.

Guys, a 2008 release for GT5 seems a bit optimistic, don't you think? GT3 came out in 2001 and GT4 2005. It took Poly 4 years to get GT4 ready, despite having features cut in the end.

I read an interview where Yamauchi said it took them nearly 3 months to model a car for the game, as a response on the sheer amount of cars included in GT4. The guys at Poly are outstanding at creating texture that look 3D. Adding any kind of car damage requires actual modelling. How long will it take them to simulate damage realistic enough for the models?

I honestly don't think it's so important to spend time on. They should concentrate on getting the audio better. Audio is such an important part of motoring.

@ Zlimess, I completely agree with that. The audio really needs work. The engine sounds could be more authentic and the tire sounds need a complete overhaul. I'm sure they'll work on it though. They have to.

Graphics alone won't be enough for the hardcore sim fan, especially with Forza 2 and GTR coming soon offering superb physics, customization, model specific in car views, and ease of online play.

But I have faith PD will up the bar.
