The clock has struck midnight here on the East Coast, which means that it’s September 1st (holy crap, how the time files). That means that the new PlayStation 3, known colloquially as the “PS3 Slim,” is officially on sale at retailers worldwide (though many stores began selling it a few days after Sony announced it at Gamescom).
During Gamescom, Sony also unveiled PS3 system software v3.00, saying that it would be out in time for the launch of the Slim. The update went live a few hours ago, and as usual, I’m here to provide my thoughts on the changes that it brings to the PS3. Hit the jump for the (detailed) analysis!
System software version 3.00 is an almost entirely visual update. It gives the XMB the most significant makeover it has seen during the life of the PS3. Unlike the New Xbox Experience, though, v3.00 doesn’t provide a completely new interface for the console -- the XMB is something that Sony has implemented across (“axross”?) many of its electronics devices, so it’s obviously a design that they want to stick with. Instead, the v3.00 update is more of a redesign, offering numerous tweaks that combine to make the PS3 easier to use and navigate (while doing a better job of advertising Sony’s products and services).
Here’s the list of stuff that the update contained, according to the description that was shown before I began downloading it (watch the video above to see Eric Lempel, Director of PSN Operations, go through all the new features -- and be sure to check it out in HD!):
Main Features Revised in System Software Version 3.00
Various elements of the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) screen have been redesigned for better viewing and easier use.
You can now access the latest information about PlayStation® related topics more easily from the XMB™ screen. Connect your system to the Internet, and then select [PlayStation®Network] > [What's New].
You can now access the latest content in PlayStation®Store directly under the [Game] and [Video] categories. Select [Game] > [PlayStation®Store] or [Video] > [PlayStation®Store].
Audio can now be output to multiple connectors simultaneously. You can set this option under [Settings] > [Sound Settings] > [Audio Multi-Output].
During video content playback, you can now use the right stick to play content in slow playback, fast reverse, or fast forward.
For a round-number (that is, ostensibly major) update like 3.00, I was expecting the download to take a while. But to my amazement, the v3.00 update downloaded more quickly than any firmware before it. Over my Verizon FiOS connection (note: my PS3 is on Wi-Fi), my unit took -- I kid you not -- less than five seconds to download the file (unfortunately, the PS3 doesn’t show how large firmware updates are, so I can’t estimate how fast this one was downloading). I mean, I was looking down at my watch when I pressed X to start the download, and by the time I looked up, it was already done. The installation process checked in at a more pedestrian time -- about three and a half minutes.
You’ll notice three changes right off the bat when your PS3 restarts after installing the firmware: the screen shows the new PS3 logo (the non-Spider-Man one that’s on the Slim), the orchestral boot-up “chime” is different, and the standard wavy background has been blinged out with sparkles. Once the XMB actually shows up, you’ll see that Sony has increased the font size. I guess what they say is true: old people do nothing but complain. I wasn’t squinting in the first place, though, and I don’t like the larger size so far -- of course, that could just be a consequence of being used to the old size.
I was a fan of the Information Board that was introduced in firmware v2.00. You know why? Because I thought it was useless -- and I could turn it off. Sony has wised up in the intervening months, though; they’ve replaced the Information Board with a feature called What’s New, and the news ticker-esque functionality of the Information Board has been moved to a new “indicator bar” in the top right corner. You can’t touch the indicator bar, so you have to watch things like “Pulse 8/27 Edition - Preview” scroll by. What’s New isn’t awful; it has twelve panels that basically amount to advertising for PlayStation-related things, like the latest PlayStation Store offerings. But you’re not forced to check it out -- it’s under the PlayStation Network tab of the XMB, so you can ignore it if you want.
The indicator bar also shows your PSN avatar and a number that signifies how many of your friends are currently online. In addition, Sony added a tiny analog clock next to the old digital one, and it’s the new XMB loading icon (instead of something that looks like a drop of water falling into a pool, the analog clock’s hands just animate). Oh, and the battery icon for the controller doesn’t obscure the time anymore. (It’s about goddamn time).
The XMB has two new choices, too. The Game and Video tabs each have their own links to the PlayStation Store now -- for example, clicking on the shortcut under Video will take you to the PlayStation Video Store. Again, most of this stuff is geared toward improved usability (and getting you to the Store more quickly so you can spend money there). The XMB friends list has also been redesigned -- each friend is now listed on an opaque gray background, which I guess was done because people’s themes made it difficult to see names. (I can’t think of any other reason, since the new format doesn’t display any more information.)
Finally, we’ve got a couple of minor non-visual additions. You can now twirl the right analog stick to control the speed of video playback (clockwise to slow-forward or fast-forward; counterclockwise to go backward). It’s neat, because before, you could only select “slow (forward)” or “slow (backward)” by hitting triangle during playback. Secondly, the PS3 can now send audio to multiple outputs, so, for example, you can have it plugged in via HDMI to your receiver and via AV to your TV.
Firmware v3.00 doesn’t really include any mind-blowing, awesome new functionality, but since I’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I won’t whine. (I also happen to be someone who doesn’t give a damn about cross-game party chat, so I’m not one of the people bitching about it.) The update’s aesthetic changes are nice, and I’m excited to see what kind of animated themes we get as long as we don’t have to pay for them. As the updates come and go, the list of things for PS3 owners to clamor for has dwindled to a scant few -- I can’t even think of anything major aside from party chat.

Does anyone know if I can somehow get my old small font/proper resolution back? I didn't buy HDMI cables for a smaller resolution.
Essentially this update, in my personal opinion, is: "we figured out how to advertise to you more, like Microsoft, so enjoy 'The Un-hideable Ticker' and extra shop options."
"You can now twirl the right analog stick to control the speed of video playback (clockwise to slow-forward or fast-forward; counterclockwise to go backward). It’s neat, because before, you could only select “slow (forward)” or “slow (backward)” by hitting triangle during playback."
You can use the d-pad in 2.0 for easy fast-forwarding/rewinding.
@Magnalon: No, there's no way to change the text size, as far as I can tell. And as for the D-pad RW/FF-ing, yeah, I knew about that -- but you couldn't control the speed of slow RW/FF-ing until now (for example: 0.25x or 0.5x).
What's wrong with the text size?? Usually people are complaining that the text is too small even on HD sets. Now it's too big?? I don't understand you people :P
Anyways, the in-game XMB loads much faster while playing online. You can actually use it now unlike before where it would take too long to pop up. I have a feeling that we will be able to use "personalized gamercards" as that this why the PSN IDs are in gray boxes. Just placeholders until they roll out the ones with designs on them. Which should have been now. And the information bar in the top right is pretty useful. Overall I like it. Except that there is a PSN Store icon under the video tab and it's not available in Canada...yet.
One small complaint (and I know it's a minor one) is that now while playing music, you can no longer just hit the PS button to toggle out of the Visualizer and busy about other things. Now, if you want to play music that's all you get to do. No more playing music and checking out pictures at the same time.
will install it when I get back from work. I like the idea of controlling video playback speed with the r-stick. I really, really like the PS3 media player, it almost makes up for how crappy the browser is.
Anyways, the in-game XMB loads much faster while playing online. really hope that's the case. that, along with the controller battery indicator covering up the damn clock, is one of my biggest gripes with the XMB.
I hope the boot-up sound is goo - I loved that Orchestra Turning sound :) Although it's still second to the original Playstaions.
It's also about time they did something with the font, though size wasn't the issue: colour was. Often the animated background would feature light to white colours, and the text is white so you can't see bugger all. Also many themes featured light backgrounds, same problem. I don't understand why they can't just allow us a wider choice of Background colours, like they do on the PSP, or give us the choice of font colour?
Overall, I'm not impressed. I hate the unhidable ticker, and the blurry background when you go into a sub-menu gets me sick. It runs faster, sure, but man, it's hard to look at now.
Also, gray boxes around your friends? What the hell...?
The ticker is now fucking huge and with shit slogans like "Girlz Play Too". Oh, and God forbid we should every forget about the PS store button cause it's everywhere.
Painful download and install, as always. It looks...worse. I can't get around that. Any perceived appeal XMB had over NXE for me just went kaput. Now I think the interfaces for EVERY major platform are gaudy and unappealing. Yay!
No way am I upgrading firmware on my Phat. I think I'm just going to have to buy a new Phat (slim looks like cheap plastic) for this. I really like the way it is now and the "upgrade" is a no no for me.
@Netnavi: Hold on, I'm confused. You're going to buy a second, non-slim PS3...just because you don't like the changes Sony has made to the XMB? And then...presumably, you're not going to update the firmware on that unit, either? I...uh...what?
You realize that the PS3 won't let you sign in to the PlayStation Network (which means you can't access the PlayStation Store) unless you have the latest firmware, right? I'm not trying to be an ass here -- I'm just a little, uh, taken aback.
personally, im a very big fan of the xmb. i thinks its very functional and very cool looking. i find the nxe a bit too hectic and scruffy. Must get that LBP theme!
Does this disable software backcompat for PS2 games on the 80GB and so forth? I've heard they remove the feature of Install other OS on some PS3 models, so I'm a tad worried they might force me into buying a PS2 and accessories to play a few games I haven't played yet.
Sony would best to install a font size option. The font's so big now I feel like I'm reading a book for those with extreme nearsightedness.
Also, that ticker is highly annoying. I'm not motivated to check out their teaser blurbs, I want it to go away and leave my clock alone. I'm in agreement that the f-list gray boxes are also garish and overbearing. I liked mine translucent, in addition to my BG graphics. Now, every option selected causes the background to ice over and become foggy.
Frankly, I see no real benefit to the consumer for this update--just for Sony's marketing team instead.
@Pichu0102: No, there's no way they'd ever do that. They didn't remove the "Install Other OS" feature from any model with a firmware update -- it's just not included in the new PS3 (the Slim).
Updating the UI is for the marketing team? Give me a break. If you don't like the update, fine...don't like it. Maybe you like the UI on the 360 or Wii better. That's your perogative. But saying the update has no consumer benefits just because you don't like it make you sound like an idiot.
Pretty sure I may be the only person who likes the new font size: whatever the old font was, seeing it from across the room was nigh impossible. Looking forward to not having to move halfway across the room and squint at it.
Definitely annoyed by the new ticker. First thing I did when I got my PS3 network-connected was figure out how to turn the Information Board off.

As an owner of both consoles, I'm just really surprised the PSN is so far behind, and is relying on aesthetic updates rather than trying to compete with the functionality of Xbox Live.
I'm really speechless in regards to the amount of people who could "care less" about cross game chat. Solo PS3 owners seem to downplay this ability, and think that it's only to tell your one other friend to "come to this game".
Effectively, it turns your console into a free conference call telephone. Why wouldn't you want that? The ability to instantly come online, and get 5 or so of your friends into an Xbox Live party faster than you can speedial them is astounding. It's definitely a worthwhile feature to have, and Sony hasn't even announced that they're working on it.
So am I entitled to anything, really, on a free service? Of course not. But on a system that boasts 1080i support, and plays it's selling points off looking better, I was a bit disappointed with the text size, and the complete lack of any sort of cool features outside of "more ads".
Also, last I checked, I'm entitled to a dissenting opinion. All the yes-men who tell Sony "I love these useless 'big' updates" will never push the company to make the service better.
Yet here we are with FW 3.0 and people are moaning about non-features that they see for only a second when starting the system and starting a game......
I'm no expert, but that actually looks like a different font for the main XMB. The curl on the lowercase "t" looks like its at a different angle, among other things.
For the love of god, give us the option to change the look back, this update is hideous. And no picture viewing while listening to music? If this is true, this update is officially horrible beyond all levels of comprehension.

Also does anyone know if I can change my name... my actual name in my profile? yeah i spelled it wrong

i hope they continue the trend of the free stuff being good and the premium stuff being crap for the themes and now avatars

Good updates on the whole though :)

@SmashDash: "Girlz Play Too" isn't just a random slogan -- it's what Sony is using to market the new Hannah Montana lilac PSP bundle.
Guess I'll just use it for Blu Rays.
You realize that the PS3 won't let you sign in to the PlayStation Network (which means you can't access the PlayStation Store) unless you have the latest firmware, right? I'm not trying to be an ass here -- I'm just a little, uh, taken aback.
Oh, I wasn't saying I don't like the depth effect, because I do. It just seems to make me personally a little dizzy. I like the way it looks, though.
@Netnavi
I'm praying to God you're kidding about buying a new console just because of this update.

Iis great the BBC iplayer is on the XMB now though. That'll save me a lot of hoop jumping when I want to watch Mitchell and Webb.
But, I guess entitlement babies will complain about anything.
Definitely annoyed by the new ticker. First thing I did when I got my PS3 network-connected was figure out how to turn the Information Board off.

GLITTER EVERYWHERE.
All I have heard is "ITS ALL ABOUT THE GAMES!"
Yet here we are with FW 3.0 and people are moaning about non-features that they see for only a second when starting the system and starting a game......
I don't really care about the Glitter, but why the fuck is the font so massive!?
o but it sparkles. that's enough to distract fans, i guess
basically its balls.
I acutally like the glitter look for some odd reason but the damn thing woulnd't let me log on so I could play MAG :(
one thing I noticed is when I launched a game via disc I had no PS3 logo or noise pop up...I liked that.
