PS3 firmware 3.41 was recently launched, and despite containing a potential patch that makes future updates easier, some users are complaining that they can't update at all, with the new firmware reportedly causing system crashes.
Some users are being told to check their network settings, even though they are connected just fine and nothing's changed on their network in the short space of time since the last firmware update. Those that have managed to install the update have received an error message stating that "no applicable data" can be retrieved.
Sony is claiming that it's not the firmware per se, but the individual hard disc drives. Sony suggests updating the HDD first, then installing the new firmware with a thumb drive.
Of course, some users say they have managed to get the firmware running without problems, and are thus claiming that there isn't an issue at all. Everybody knows that if your own particular console has been running fine, then that means all the consoles are perfect.
Remember when you'd just put games into your gaming console and then played them? Y'know, before companies like Sony arbitrarily issued mandatory firmware updates that caused gamers to go on wild goose chases to update their systems with useless shit that has no real benefit to them? Yeah, I miss those days.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
So true.
"I HAVE NOA PROBLEMS U GUYS ARE JUST XBOTS".
Cowsick, you could say.
Yeah, I do miss those days.... Especially when this kind of update does shit and nothing else.
Sucks when stuff like this happens though.
Last time I checked, Jim could do whatever the hell he wants. I'm sure he really appreciates the advice though.
Methinks if you want everything done the way CVG does it, you should just stick to reading CVG. You'd kind of have to be a moron to read a writer you don't even like.
Oh wait, never mind ...
A Heavy-Rain (yes Jim, Heavy Rain) mandatory firmware update deleted my profile, and I learned that many games require that trophies be synced up with your profile info just to load up the game and play offline.
The only way to repair this: Start a new profile, sign on, and link it to your PSN, which required my taking it to a friend's house because my internet has never worked with the Playstation, wired or wireless.
That said, Heavy Rain as well as a score of other exclusives, along with a controller that doesn't feel like a generic toysrus purchase make me favor the PS3 over the competition by far. The above issue just cements my belief that this entire linked-up generation is a shadow of the PS1 and PS2 generations.
12fiftyONE: Apparently you didn't read the post. The only opinion he placed was in the last little paragraph. One that isn't without merit. Ease off the Haterade.
Also the claims always come from suspect sources (to say the least ), hell I've seen people who don't have ps3 say this so yeah, gotta call BS until proven true with these.
I swear its half the people that are installing just turning their system off mid way. "I will just finish this later".
"Sony is claiming that it's not the firmware per se, but the individual hard disc drives. Sony suggests updating the HDD first, then installing the new firmware with a thumb drive."
Sony must be in on it!!!
Sony didn't invent this shit man. And you like those days? Then easy fix: disconnect your PS3 from the network, and you don't have to worry about it, games go in and just play! And like those days, you don't get online multiplayer, but that is a trade off for no updates.
They don't force you to stay connected, disconnect, easy done. Good old days!
its not like like its a 50% fail rate. if it was something like that i think we would all agree that you should not buy that equipment.
oh wait you say you have an xbox?
Where was the spin in this article?
That's naive. Spend some time at the Sony forums and you'll see extensive threads on system issues since 3.00, and people in the industry are upset that Sony has given firmware management to a cheaper, less experienced team since then.
It's no red ring but it is troubling. If I hadn't been able to get online when I had my problem, it would still be unable to play most games even offline.
Kinda like disruptive software updates... I think I see a pattern emerging...
Oh, and ON topic: Yeah, I do love the idea of a console that simply WORKS when I need it to work. Call me lazy, but that's probably the main reason that I've stuck to consoles over the years. I just don't have the time to tinker with and troubleshoot my rig during my downtime.
Paragraph 2: FACTS!
Paragraph 3: FACTS!
Paragraph 4: 50% FACTS! 50% OPINIONS!
Paragraph 5: OPINIONS! Also, nostalgia.
By my count that's like 75% fact, with only a little "I miss the old days when crap like this didn't happen" comment thrown in. A nostalgic moment by Jim = "OMFG TABLOID SPIN DERPA DERP DERP!" ?
Advice to haterade drinking assholes: Fuck off. I'm looking at your 12fiftyone
@ Hriki - But if he does that he will be left with buying unfinished games that NEED patching, its tantamount to piracy I tell ya's.
Your my hero!! Keep on teaching people how to properly use the Internet!!! Thnx a million:)
The opposite is also true Jim. Trust me there's plenty of people that find a problem with some consumer electronic and convince themselves it must be a pandemic and that everyone else in the world has the same problem. I work in tech support for a big accessory company, I hear this shit every single day.
Sounds like you should stop reading Destructoid and spend all your time at CVG.
No, really. Do it.
Nope. That's sarcasm based off a personal, publicly subjective and accountable opinion. Spin would be if I said "Sony is a key perpetrator to digital updates corrupting the simple joys of gaming and this evidence proves it."
That's the problem with a lot of people who read gaming blogs. They think they're reading journalists and thus think everything they say is being presented as an iron-clad fact and not a personal opinion.
Mrandydixon is the purveyor of sound advice and should be heeded.
Waiting for housemate to get in and see if his PS3 is going to get borked too, fingers crossed it doesnt, I got my self Uncharted 2 for the weekend :-(
You what I also miss? Those old turn-dial telephones and giant brick cellphones. Hell, I miss Windows 95!
Screw this world and it's progress and dammit for not always working perfectly!
That's what you get for spending $700 on a half finished console you need to update every two weeks to keep running.
What a borked piece of trash! LOLOMG
....sorry, wanted to give the trolling thing a try...i still don't see the appeal.
This sucks, sony needs to figure out some way of making the whole update process a little less intrusive.
The longest i've had to wait for an update on the 360 is like a minute. NOT saying it's better, just saying i'm sure Sony should be smart enough to figure out how to make it work as well.
"Remember when you'd just put games into your gaming console and then played them? "
You're right. Why did we ever move away from the Super Nintendo?
"The opposite is also true Jim. Trust me there's plenty of people that find a problem with some consumer electronic and convince themselves it must be a pandemic and that everyone else in the world has the same problem. I work in tech support for a big accessory company, I hear this shit every single day."
It's also true that working in tech support taints you. There's plenty of people in tech support that think that the few people that call and whine about asinine things represent the majority of the human race, which is just not true. I used to work in tech support, but having lived in reality for a bit now, I see that my view was skewed.
When updating any firmware, there is always a very slight chance that something could go wrong, even under 100% ideal conditions. Now, couple that with the fact that millions of gamers aren't operating their systems under anywhere near ideal conditions and factor in the possibility that outside hardware (user-installed HDs) could be an issue and you've got a guarantee that SOMEONE is going to have a problem.
And let's not forget that a single person bitching counts as much as 1000 people having no problems to be seen.
Also, not sure if it was you guys that reported it or if I read it elsewhere, but apparently the most recent firmware had some hidden features that will supposedly enable future updates to be faster and less resource intensive to perform.
Here's hoping.
No you do put your own little spin on almost every blog entry you put out that is what makes you, you!
